"Tapered" vs "Semi-Elliptical" vs "Fully-Elliptical" vs "Cross-braced"
marks replied to Elisha's topic in Gear and Rigging
an elliptical wing is a tapered wing. some wings are tapered more than others. there is no such thing as semi elliptical, just some are more tapered and some less. crossbraced wing means that there is brace between cells that is added, and it goes across from one side of the rib bottom, to the other rib top. crossbracing holds the wing a little more rigid, and reduces that "bubble look" between each cell, the wing is held a little more flat. -
i think you would be better off with a safire.

ya, they all seem to do it more when at higher altitudes.

mike, nobody knows, if you ask 10 different peeps you will get 10 different answers. i have yet to see one person fix it completly. i think it was first noticed on the vx, it is more noticable on that canopy. ive heard peeps say that the velo does not do it, well it does i have seen it, just not as bad as i have seen the vx do it. it seems to usually happen to older canopies, but i have seen it happen on new ones. it seems to get worse at higher density altitude's. it also seems to get worse after the canopy has been wet. i dont think there is a ryme or reason that somone defenatly knows what fixes it for sure, maybe it has multiple causes and multiple soulutions depending on the cause. but i do know for sure, no matter what peeps tell you, i have yet to somone come up with a single cure, or any cure for that matter, to fix this problem. i have noticed that my jvx doesnt do it. but there are alot of vx's and velo's that dont do it also. but there are alot that do. and there arent many jvx's out there yet.

i dont know anything about the samuri either, nor did i say anything about it.
-

taylor if your going to insist on jumping that canopy, let me invite you out to skydive the farm on the weekend of january 28th. we can help you along and show you some things that might help keep you and others safe. about the stilletto. dont get me wrong, i wont put a student under a stiletto, first and formost because of the possibility of spinning line twist. although, if it didnt have that possibility it probably wouldnt have the other cherecteristics that make it not good for students. so thins would be my point. but if it came to a 95 lb girl and a manta 288 and a 200 sq ft stilleto, minus the possibility of spinning line twist, i would most certainly., i guess we would call this canopy somethingmore like a sabre-sabre2 or a safire-sifire2.
-
i wouldnt mind putting an aff student on a stilletto, loaded lightly that is. if it wasnt for the possibility of spinning line twists.

ya, but there was somthing with the vector. i think it was just happening to peeps who had traveled there from a low altitude. i remember they callued sunato and were told that it didnt have the feture for what they were trying to do.. maybe somone else who was there and has one will chime in with what the problem was. everyone was having this problem. i had to loan my neptune out to like 5 different peeps, some more than once, during the course of the week.
-
The Safire is no Cobalt or Stiletto. Derek first off, i know nothing about the cobalt. but i do about the stiletto.. is the cobalt as elliptical as the stiletto?
-
alot of peeps, actually i think everyone that had the vector in colorado had a zero'ing problem with it. i think somone figured out how to fix it, but i dont own one so i dont know how they did.
-
Have you ever done that? What canopies, have you or would you use? Dave safire. mainly.
-
I dont have any problem putting aff students under full elliptical canopies. Why is it because of an ellipse it is "dangerous"?
-
well, i have no problem with my neptune. i think there were some bugs at the begining but everything is great now.
-
you can notice a fairly large difference on most high performance canopies with just 2"longer risers. advantage? well, that depends on what your doing and what your flying. i fail to see how a longer recovery arc is an advantage with a canopy that has so much drag that it begins to loose speed while still diving. but then again, maybe someone could explain that to me better.

i think the problem with hma's on that kind of wing is the UV exposure also. i would love to watch someone deploy one of those paragliders at terminal.

yes, he said free jumps! i love brazilian women. did you say moonshine? organizing and coaching for any discipline is free as always. see ya there.
