Instead of "years in sport", have "year started"
lewmonst replied to skyshark6's topic in Suggestions and Feedback
I'm sticking with 14 years in the sport because even during the times I was grounded I remained involved in the sport through my job and my friends. and that I agree counts as years in the sport. I don't count my first two years because I hardly did any jumps and didn't spend much time in or around skydiving at all. just my interpretation of "years in the sport"... to each their own. get your 1000th already! (shhh... I got mine a couple weeks ago....) peace lew http://www.exitshot.com -

yeah but you should update your jump numbers periodically, so how hard is it to change the number of years in the sport? Also, I know people who started jumping in the 80's, and haven't jumped in 15 years... If they posted something like 1984 as the year they started jumping, that would imply 20 years in the sport (and 20 years of knowledge) which isn't accurate. I started in 97, but I only claim 5 real years in the sport. peace lew http://www.exitshot.com -
More evidence that weather holds are dangerous and skydivers are safer in the air. There were two seperate serious knee injuries in the main landing area at Elsinore yesterday (Sunday) during a soccer game. One was most likely a torn ACL and the other was a dislocated and broken patella with torn patellar tendon. The latter of which was unfortunately caused by a collision with my knee, which only sustained a bruise. (I'm sorry!) The brits won the soccer, i mean, futbol, game... take caution on cloudy days! peace lew edit for michelle http://www.exitshot.com

Well, you all should be happy to know that I dropped the camera (remains) off at Ritz... The original salesman I had purchased it from was there. When I put the plastic bag of chunks on the counter, he was like, "Uh oh... Is that the 10D?" and I said, "...was...". Another woman who worked there said, "Did you buy the ESP?" and the salesman said "Yes she did" so she said, "Oh great, you're fine then..." and I said, "Well... not really... I have to be honest with you. It was destroyed in a fire, and I know the ESP doesn't cover fire damage, so I really don't have my hopes up here." And the salesman said, "That doesn't look like fire damage to me." "Me neither," said the other woman. So they took out the Repair Order form (ha ha, repair, yeah right) and started filling it out... The salesman suggested I make up some story of dropping it off a bridge into a river to explain the water vapor inside parts of it... And I said I wasn't planning on lying. So, on the form, in the section "Describe the problem" we just wrote "Camera was in horrible accident". We had to look through a stack four inches high of copies of ESP's since I didn't have a copy of mine with me. The salesman said, "I'm really rooting for you on this one. I hope they give you a new camera. With all the ESP's we sell, they make a fortune off of them and rarely ever get a claim. It would be nice to see someone get the benefits of it for once." That stack we looked through was several hundred ESP's for between $100 and $500 each... So, that's the deal. They'll call me in 3 weeks and let me know the verdict. I still don't have my hopes up. I mean, the febreeze helped a lot, but still... I saved a little piece of the camera that said 10D as a momento. It's funny... on the form, there were some check-boxes, and one for "Any visible scratches" um... "lots" we said. peace lew http://www.exitshot.com

well... a couple of things... It's not insurance that I have on it, it's the Ritz Camera Extended Service Plan... which specifically says "Our Expanded Service Policy provides your equipment with coverage from almost every possible occurrence (except fire and theft) while you are using your equipment."... And i talked to the salesman for an hour about skydiving, showed him my helmet, and talked about dropping it... He said as long as i could bring in the pieces, it's covered. so... we cleaned it, and ran it over with the truck which sufficiently smashed it, threw out all the charred and melted pieces, and doused it with febreeze for the last couple hours. The febreeze seems to be working better than anything, but it's dried once, and the smell was still noticeable... I'm not really expecting to get a replacement, but I figure I might as well try. Looking at the sum of all our losses, if there's a chance I can get one major thing replaced without paying for it, it would help a lot. sad photos attached... lew http://www.exitshot.com

Since I had purchased the $200 warranty on my 10D that covered everything but theft and fire... I though I might try to salvage my 10D remains and make it look like a different accident... So it's soaked in several batches of oxyclean and been scrubbed with a toothbrush and cleaner... all the charred parts removed... but I still can't get the fire smell out... is it hopeless? the remains are quite a sight to see... all those fragile parts bent and smashed and mangled... it's amazing what those chunks of metal, plastic and electronics used to do... think anyone on Ebay would buy a destroyed 10D? desperate for a digital camera once again... lew http://www.exitshot.com

How many jumps on the Katana so far? What other canopy can you compare the openings to? How do you pack normally? How consistent are the openings? How long to open? Thanks! peace lew http://www.exitshot.com

you could be bumping the zoom when you put it in the box. look through it before you put it in the box, make sure it's zoomed all the way out and the focus is set on infinity (mountains). Then turn the camera completely OFF. Gaffer tape the zoom button in place and the focus ring. Then put it in the box and close the box completely before trying to turn it on. That should do the trick. What are you filming and how far away are you from your subject? peace lew http://www.exitshot.com

Magic Mike!!! aw, man, that sucks! I am so sorry to hear that. I hope you heal completely and quickly. With that steel neck of yours, it must have been one hell of a fast opening... Sending you and Jen love from me and Cajones. I hope you are back in the air soon! peace lew http://www.exitshot.com

Conceptus Tongue Switch New Design
lewmonst replied to ConceptusInc's topic in Photography and Video
I emailed you... I had a sealed tongue switch i was using with my 10D. I got the newer one, no completely sealed and it quit after about 3 jumps... saliva shorting it out? I had more tandem videos to do, so i ran and bought a bite switch. Glad you switched back to the completely sealed config. peace lew http://www.exitshot.com -

would you be refeering to my recent marriage?

normally jump an otter and no real effect on opening since I have the weight centered on the helmet. Have you had any less than perfect openings with it yet? Any significant line twists, hard openings, line dumps, etc? You will learn a lot more about it when that happens. How many jumps on the camera set-up like that? Do you stick your head out to check the spot? Can you freefly (on your head) well with it? peace lew http://www.exitshot.com
