Thanks everyone for your input. I think my original estimate of 3 is somewhat high. The stuff from pchapman seems to match some other stuff I got via PM quite well. It seems that the type of canopy ( by that I mean student, tandem or HP) is not the main factor in glide ratio, therefore, when estimating how far someone can fly from a given altitude, larger canopies may not have an advantage. Wow, 162 views and no one has any input? Ok, I'll work with 3:1 and assume they all fly the same. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

As far as I can tell it was only one prof that claimed he was misrepresented. He was Carl Wunsch. More about it here http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/archives/story.html?id=7e23a550-9cc4-4697-b730-b2d094f1628a&p=1 Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

There are basically three types of Global Warming alarmists. Type I - the climate is going to change dramatically in the next 20 years. The polar ice caps will melt, putting all coastal cities under water. There will be monster storms, floods, droughts and billions of people will starve. When the scientists point out that the polar ice caps won't melt within the next 1000 years and the link between climate and weather is not well understood they turn to type II. Type II - Of course it won't be a bad as Al Gore shows in his movie. But just 1 foot of sea level rises is enough to put millions of people under water. All the warming withing the last 200 years is directly attributal to mankind and it's emmision. Just small temperature increases can cause untold suffering. Finally Type III alarmist - The climate is changing and changing faster than ever before. We can prove that CO2 does have a warming effect. Therefore we must reduce our CO2 emmission to give us more time to adapt. How a warmer climate will effect us if difficult to say - but why take the risk? Reducing our CO2 emmissions can't hurt. Unless you fall into one of these three types you must be one of Billvons three types of deniers. THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUND! Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

I know I could probaly find this stuff with lots of searching, but maybe someone with knowledge can gives me estimates to work with. I just want to get an idea of differences (if any). So what is that glide ratio for :- a) a pocket rocket like Velocity b) sabre 2 c) a typical student canopy d) a tandem canopy all assuming full flight with no riser/toggle input. Atom service bulletin - CYPRES cutter relocation
speedy replied to ernokaikkonen's topic in Gear and Rigging
I am not familiar with Vigil cutters. Why would relocating the cutter lead to a ban of old style Vigil cutters? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -
I agree with you totally on that one. So, how are you going to make sure sufficient separation is maintained? I use Kallends "theory" as you put it, because it is based on sound scientific fact. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

If we would only use energy saving light bulbs, we could save the bees. You do know that global warming and the exact output of CO2 from your car is responsible for this, don't you? If not, do a search in google for bees and global warming. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Man, I should be dead already I just lost 16 years of my life I am so glad they are only statistics.

As for your explanation of what the the pilot is doing, I can't comment. There is not enough information in your post to follow what the whole jump run looks like. Of course, if you are having issues with separation at openening times, somethings need to be looked at. Whether this is the jump run or exit timing, is not clear. But do look into the problem and don't give up without a solution. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Maybe if we make everyone jump non-steerable rounds we can solve the canopy collision problem. Seems to work with the military. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

eyes back? 9 month layoff due to a broken t12. I know it doesn't seem right now. But do get the feeling back quick or does it take a couple of a hundred jumps ? I wanna do the 270's again, but it just doesn't feel right at the moment P.S. I only do them outside of traffic. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

watch this video and I'll take my chances skydiving any day http://mustseedaily.com/content/view/60/1/ and I know, it's gotta be a repost Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

The ice core data shows that if you warm the planet up then you will increase the CO2 in the atmosphere. If you cool it down, you can decrease the CO2 in the atmosphere. What 9/11 conspiracies do I believe in? I think "Loose change" was the biggest load of BS I have ever seen. I haven't seen Al Gores movie yet, but I expect it will be on a par with Loose change. I have wondered why, here in Germany, although Solar power is pushed no end, you don't see the government buildings installing the panel on their flat roofs. Here in Germany you can sell back the excess power you generate at a price higher than what you pay for electricity from the major suppliers. This implies solar power is a no lose situation. Looking around you see solar panels installed either on farmers buildings or on communication complexes. I guess the communication complexes need backup power when the grid fails. But why the farmers? Even more important for me is why a solar panel system for my house would cost around 30,000 euros. At my current electricity bill it would take me 30 years to recover the cost (when all my needs are covered with solar). Why should I go solar? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

270 in Patterns was: Double Fatality - Dublin,GA
speedy replied to JohnMitchell's topic in Safety and Training
I looked at the first one on your list and that does not match what Kallend said. Agreed, it was not a high performance manouver, but neither was it a standard 90° pattern manouver. Edited to add - This probaly supports your view though When someone pulls out of a side street in car and gets hit by another coming along the main road, he did not do it delibrately. He just did not see the other car coming. Transfer this scenario to three dimensions and you can see how aware we really have to be under canopy. Accidents happen and they always will. Then there are the accidents waiting to happen. Which was it here? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -
From your OP... If the jumper had a tendency to pull high and this was known, maybe someone should have talked to him before and not afterwards. I had to read much more than your OP before I could understand why you were complaining. Not all DZ's operate like Perris. Was the jumper aware that when pulling high he must notify manifest? Did he pull high as planned or did he have a problem where he decided pulling high was the best option ? Is someone on the ground with radio contact with the aircraft watching for premeture deployments ? Also I can do a hop n pop from 13,000 ft and be on the ground in under 5 mins I am a bit dizzy afterwards though Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Secondary lower performance canopy?
speedy replied to PhreeZone's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Well if anyone wants to swap my Icarus VX extreme 99 sqft for a Spectre 120 I would be happy to do it. I have wanted a second lower performance canopy for a while. The VX is just so damm hard to sell. I would of course keep my Velocity for the hop n pops where I can swoop without any traffic. I just don't like swooping in traffic because the ones below you can be so erratic. They are generally not erratic, but it only takes one.... it just not worth risking. I have always thought like this, not just because of the recent incidents. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -
Why would they need to have more moey than the oil or coal industries? If there is money to be made promoting Solar is better than coal and oil then they will do it. Another question... How long do your solar panels have to run before they pay back the energy used to build them, transport them etc. ? Energy that was no doubt supplied by fossil fuels. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

From the article linked above.... Some (currently unknown) process causes Antarctica and the surrounding ocean to warm. I think we really should be looking at what this unknown process is. 1st, it causes CO2 levels to rise, 2nd it suddenly disappears leaving CO2 to do the rest of the warming. Of course when the planet starts to cool again (most likely due to an unknown process) then the CO2 levels start to fall. When the CO2 levels have fallen enough to cool the planets by itself, the unknown cooling process that started it all disappears and at some point the unknown warming process starts again. You are right, sure is complicated. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

The political aspect started when Margaret Thatcher had trouble with the coal miners in the U.K. She did not trust foreign oil, so she used the AGW issue as an excuse to use nuclear power. As communism started to fail the anti-industrialists needed a new area in which to gain support for bringing down the industialized west. So they hopped onto the enviro-don't burn oil or coal bandwagon. Politicians will do anything to get a vote. Look at how the political partys in the U.K now are scrambling to show their green credentials. For the politicians its all about votes at the moment. On a wider scale, obviously the US will benefit if they can hold back the development of China and Africa. The US certainly does not want them competing to sell goods in the world market. So, the US invests billions in climate change research to show why China should not burn their coal resources and Africans should use solar cells, while back home they ignore the findings and power their industry with oil and coal. I agree with that statement totally. But is does not contradict rushmc's statement "Human causation is highly debated " at all The attempt to provide our energy from another source apart from the finite resource of fossil fuels is something we will have to do at some point anyway. If you tried to tax the people based on "We need the money to develop alternative energy sources", they would complain no end. Asking them to pay extra taxes to save the planet is a sure winner. It's not about saving the world. It's taxes and political agenda that's driving the AGW issue. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

What makes someone pick the place to make thier first jump?

I could not have put it better my self. The DZ was local so I signed up. -
Anyone see Soylent Green? A dumb little sci-fi movie. The primary plot element is that the "Greenhouse Effect" has put the world into permanent heatwave. Everyone's walking around sweating and starving and waiting for a little bit of food made from plankton (with a secret ingredient as well). At the end we discover the ocean plankton is dying too... The movie was made in 1973. Notably, the movie was made from a novella (Make Room! Make Room! published in 1966) which did not include the global warming phenomenon. This might help date the origin of the public consciousness of the idea. I don't think that film had anything to do with it. It was Margaret Thatcher that started it. She had to have a good reason to push nuclear power and get rid of the coal fired power plants. This way she could reduce grip the miners had on power production in the UK. I'll have the rods removed from my back. At the moment there are 3 vertebrae held together, after removale there will be only two, which will give me a little more flexibility. The cost of my little episode was very roughly $30,000, leaving out what would have been loss of earnings. All covered by insurance. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
