  1. Cheating is bad for everyone involved. I have never been a cheater but have been cheated on and have seen it happen to others all the time. Not only does cheating breakdown any structure or foundation of a relationship but it perpetuates a cycle of lies and deception involving everyone and usually turns out to be a bad and ugly situation. If I am in a relationship and there was any reason for me to start a new relationship with someone else, my SO would know about it well beforehand. I feel I owe it to them first to be honest and to try and better things on the homefront before just moving on to something else. I feel sorry for the lady who is in the position of having two kids with her SO and knowing of his cheating, but not doing anything about it. That is a very sad situation and a difficult one to piece apart. Both of those individuals are living out of fear. Sometimes you never know the outcome of a situation or decision until you see it and I would never judge them but I just can't see myself being there and I don't believe that can be healthy. That one is hard but I would always support two people in that situation to go separate ways. In some ways it is harder, but at least you can be true to yourself and know that you are not constantly living in a lie. I think cheating is the ultimate betrayal to a monogamous relationship and I think it is usually pretty clear when a relationship is exclusive and when it is not. 2. Hey Chop, I think we kind of hijacked this thread. Sorry everyone, its just that I haven't seen Chop for so long, we had to catch up. Okay now you guys can continue onward with the business of relationships. Ahem... Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

  7. Hmmmm. That makes sense. I need to sit on that one and digest it for a minute. I guess I am not getting the concept of what is ground speed vs. what is airspeed. Can someone explain what my dytter means when it says true airspeed, whatever else kinds of airspeed there are??? Is it kind of like when you are flying an airplane and your GPS tells you you are traveling this direction at 100 knots but your ground speed actually fluctuates with the strength of a tailwind (faster) or a headwind (slower)? So your speed of the aircraft doesn't change or stays the same but your ground speed is affected as far as how fast you are "actually" moving across the ground i.e., 100 knots? If you haven't been able to already tell, I am just a bit confused. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  8. And you're passing me up in jump numbers at an alarming rate! Alrighty then Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

  12. Well, I can tell you about my most recent trip ... So we go out on this adventure. We are in search of as many freshwater species of fish we can find ... Our Mission: Head up to wine country near Sonoma to the Russian River. Catch, sort, identify, count and re-release as many species as we could get our hands on. We had our net (huge) and our boat (that we all hiked down a huge hill and back up again). Just to give you an idea of how huge this net was, it required about 20 of us to pull it in. It was like a big hukilau. It was a little hairy when we realized on one attempt to bring in a catch that we caught two big boulders from the bottom substrate . Some of us had to get more wet than others and some of us had to do more work than others. All in all, our group of three brought home the biggest bacon. We cast our net and had the biggest payoff. Mostly we dragged in lots of Hardheads and Pike Minnow (at about 1:1), some Small Mouth Bass, some big ass Suckers, some freshwater crawdads ... It was a pretty fun trip over all. Next weekend will be better. We are taking out a R/V out of Moss Landing. We'll be dragging some huge nets, mostly Otter Trawls and Isaac's Kid Midwater Trawls at different depths. These are the coolest trips cause like Forest says, Life is like a box of chocolates ... you just never know what you are gonna get. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." 13. YEAH! PLF KING November of 1973. That was a good month and a good year too. I give your story a "10". Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  14. So it is like THE MOST beautiful Saturday here in Northern California. Finally a weekend with a break and no midterm or huge project due the next day or two. I had been planning on jumping this weekend for the last 2 months since it has been that long since I've made a jump. OK here comes the whining ... So then on Wednesday my instructor mentions in lab der der der ... the Fish Sampling trip on Saturday ... I had to get up at 5:30 AM to Fish Sample in Geyserville for my Ichthyology class instead of skydiving. WIll I ever make it to the DZ? Fish sampling was pretty fun and we did catch some pretty neat fish but all work and no play makes Jen someone who needs to get to a Drop Zone and fast. Where is everyone going to be tomorrow? Maybe tomorrow I can finally get there (sigh) Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  15. Jim that makes sense but I was one of those people who would vote that you would lose more altitude on a no wind day on landing due to less air resistance (wind) in your canopy. But maybe that statement is incorrect since your canopy stays inflated whether there is wind or not. So never mind, I am apparently just confusing myself . Maybe Quade will fill us in on Monday. (taking notes) As for the rest of you, you will all be quizzed on this later Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  16. Hey Lummy, I think I have the temperature/altitude thing licked although someone could probably add to the little bit I know about it. I think in higher temps especially depending on humidity and "thickness" of the air, when a gas is warmer the molecules are spread farther apart. So on warmer days air molecules are further apart so the density of the air is less meaning less air resistance. Altitude is similar, the higher you go the less dense the air = less resistance. In both cases, less air resistance = less collisions of air molecules with canopy fabric = less frictional force opposing downward force of you + canopy + gravity. At higher altitudes you will lose altitude more quickly under canopy in a turn. Unfortunately lost a friend due to rapid loss of altitude in a turn on a jump made from a higher altitude and less dense air than he was used to Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  17. These are my definitions: Out of an Otter: Poised exit: would be right foot forward in the door, left foot back, slightly crouched with your back straight bracing yourself with both hands holding the frame of the door. Generally used in standard AFF otter exits although there are many other different kinds of exits, too. You also want your chin up and to step out sideways off the airplane with your body as presented into the prop blast as possible to achieve the most stable exit. I also like doing these exits for hop n pop accuracy exits out of the Cesna 206. Only difference out of the 206 is that I am crouched down on one knee instead of squatting (easy to spot like that too ) Floater exit: Just like a poised exit. Same idea in that you want a belly to prop blast presentation but you are either holding onto the airplane from the outside or holding onto the bar inside with at least half of your body exposed to the prop blast before exit. Floaters in 10 Way work against gravity and attempt to "float" to stay above the base while it launches so they can sink to it. Diver Exit: You are inside the airplane fully before exit and are launching yourself out of the airplane in some fashion, usually in a head first like you were diving into a swimming pool orientation. Divers work with gravity and use gravity to their advantage and much of the time are attempting to get down to something. Ride the slide Exit (One of my personal favorites): Go out and get 2 of your friends. (It is also fun to do solo). Sit train with your backs to the prop blast and if you can hold it "ride the slide". Donut Exits: Very fun. Works well with 3, 4 or 8 (with cross grips). Also called "Tube" exits. Hold on tight to leg grips of the person ahead of you and don't forget to tuck. Rodeo Exits: Saddle up with a partner and chase a chunked hybrid and then orbit it with other rodeos. Scared Shitless exit: Kick and flail wildly with arms and legs, try and grab birds, PANIC and cry for help!!! Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  18. OK, then does it have to do with the way the canopy cuts through the air? I know from experience that the windier it is, the less drive I get therefore less forward speed. As for losing altitude, maybe you're right about that one. Maybe you don't really lose altitude quicker??? I could be out on a limb, this one is making me think too hard after 4 midterms the last two weeks that ended today. But isn't it glide ratio/slope yada yada yada for every 3 feet forward you descent one foot or something???? I could be way off here ... Any canopy physicists in the house? Where is the Professor? 20. After learning on a Spectre 7 Cell which is not too different from the Triathlon (except that the canopy fabric of the Triathlon if I remember right is a hybrid vs. ZP in the Spectre). I remember that sometimes I would have to remember to tell myself before landing to be aggressive with the flare and to make sure my flare had equal toggle input on both sides. I had a friend who would consistently land her Spectre by unevenly applying more toggle pressure to one side more than the other. Then when she would drift to the right, collapsing that side of her canopy more she would always reach to brace herself for the fall like we all instinctively do but this caused her to dive her canopy into the ground more. Eventually one day, she very badly broke her leg and it was a very bad break. It took her a long time to recover from it and it was a pretty nasty injury. With any canopy, you have to love it like your child but also let it know who is boss. For the most part they are meant to open so once they're open it is usually up to what input the pilot gives it. On no wind days you are coming in faster and losing altitude quicker. You have less air pressure inflating your canopy coming into land. It usually requires a little higher start to your flare and a little more aggressive toggle input to finish out the flare on a seven cell. I don't know what your wing-loading is, I am speaking from my own experience which was an approximate 1:1 wingloading. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." 22. Dammit, Are you guys jumping right now??? Dammit Dammit Dammit OK, well, be safe. Yeah, Be Safe (Bastards ) Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
  23. When it comes to wine I'm actually not that picky, I enjoy a variety of wines from red to white, dry and oaky to light and fruity. I like just about most wines unless they are those reaaallllly sweet Port wines. Oh My GOD. A friend of mine brought over an expensive bottle of Port wine one night and my mouth didn't know whether to pucker or gag. I just had this one wine that was excellent. It was from the St. James Winery in Missouri and that place was awesome. It was a semi-sweet, pretty medium bodied wine and it was really good. It left a nice warm feeling in my tummy . I haven't a clue what it was called, all I know is that I'm going back there and getting another bottle or two next time I'm there. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." 25. Woooooowwwww, SkyMama, my heart goes out to you. Please tell me that my angellic 3 year old daughter will always stay this angellic, never want to wear make up, go out with boys until she is 21 and that she will get only straight As in Biology ... Just to give you SOME peace of mind, 14 IS a very difficult age for girls. Remember when you were 14? I am not excusing her behavior and you have my deepest sympathies but I remember 14 and it is such an indepent age when it really shouldn't be. It really is a major changing point. Adolescence in itself is such a bizarre time in life, isn't it? I am raising my daughter and plan on continuing until she is at least 12. After that if adolescence corrupts her childhood purity, she can live with Dad for a while. If I had to choose, I would definitely take the first 12 years. They say girls get along better with their Dads as teenagers. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."
