Should students be made to look at fatality pictures?
DexterBase replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You won't get a copy of it. It's not something we circulate. If you happen to be in the same place as one of the (very few) jumpers that have a copy, you might ask to watch it in private. It's certainly not for thrills, entertainment, or any purpose other than taking a serious look at your motivation to BASE jump. -
Damn the reporters, that's something I'd really enjoy doing!
-
Yeah, you were there when I bought it. It seemed pretty cool at the time didn't it? Oh well.
-
Anyone know where Crispi boots can be purchased? I'm thinking I'll probably just end up getting a pair of Hanwags when I'm in Moab in a couple weeks.
-
I'll come out next weekend. If the weather sucks, we can just hang out, drink beer, and tell war stories. Sound good?
-
I need to get another set of boots. Please vote on your favorite BASE boot and if you mark other, please include what boot you prefer. If you can, give a supplier for your favorite boot. Thanks everyone. C-ya!

I actually bought an anemometer for this very reason, and this was after I had 200 BASE jumps already. I wanted to be able to quantify wind speed. Up until that point, the only thing we had going was, "Well, the wind doesn't feel too bad. Wait there's a gust. Now it's not bad... hmmm..." In practice, the thing always ended up staying in the car and never actually made it to an exit point. Later it started to malfunction so I took it back to REI and traded it back in towards a new pair of hiking boots. Now I'm back to making educated guesses. Who knows...
-
Hmmm... what abot the forecast for next weekend?
-
How's the weather there right now?
-
You know what weould be really cool? If someone gave picture examples of different antennas, different fixtures found on them (what's dangerous, what not to touch, etc.) and how to tell if the thing is hazardous to climb on or at least what to be aware of.
-
I quesion the same thing. I've had this discussion before but let's wait to see what the reply is before we continue.

That's a pretty low wingloading for that canopy. Especially an unvented canopy. I'd be curious to know if that jumper has experienced any pressurization problems, particularly on low airspeed deployments. I'd be willing to bet his end cells never pressurize quickly or cleanly. Unvented FOX canopies aren't really known for clean openings anyhow. I'd be pretty reluctant to jump a non-vented canopy of with that wingloading from anything low.

Hey guys, actual feelings aside, we should watch the way we conduct ourselves here. Making comments like "that stupid bitch" or "fucking pussy" or "stupid skydivers" or other comments like that don't make us look very intelligent to whoever happens to pass through here. Kinda makes us sound like the crowds that bash BASE videos that get posted on various sites on the internet. Do we care? Maybe, maybe not. But we should consider how we want this forum to be viewed by the people who come here to read useful information or even reporters coming here to do their five minutes of research before writing something in a newspaper. How do we want to look? Just my thoughts on the matter. I would prefer the forum to show us as fairly intelligent, accepting people. (which may or may not be true) We all use the forums, but they don't belong to any of us. We're all guests here. That email was pretty damn funny though.

The way I packy my PC's, having an internal handle in there wouldn't make a difference to me. I end up with a hard ball at the end of the BOC which makes pulling the PC out really easy. So, how was the jump?
-
I know, and I'm hoping he'll tell us why. I'm pretty curious about that.
-
What's your reason for wanting an internal handle on a PC that big? Most BASE gear manufacturers will put a handle in there if you call them up.
-
Also, I actually don't know why anyone would jump a "4 spoke PC" especially at higher airspeeds, when a PC with more loadtapes would be more stable.
-
No given PC's of the same diameter, the length of the centerline will be more important than the number of loadtapes.
-
It doesn't really matter. The gear does not make the jumper. That is, unless you have ASYLUM gear. Then you will be blessed with all kinds of supernatural jumping abilities.
-
I think that the length of the centerline has far more to do with how much drag a PC creates (which is the real reason for switching PC sizes for different airspeeds) so load tape configuration would take a backseat to that. The closest we're going to be able to come on this is a very general idea of how many vertical feet generally a certain configuration takes to open. Also are we assuming a go-n-throw, or a delay appropriate for that object height assuming an immediately available landing area? If we can agree on a couple of standards, then we should be able to have a productive conversation about this. What we would need to do is agree on a general set of parameters. And we'd almost have to do a separate thread for all configurations. Or we could do a series of polls to collect information for a while and then make a chart based on general consensus. This would be very approximate though. I think the best solution would be for everyone to meet up at Tom's and we can spend an entire weekend lasering and videoing openings with the different configurations and different gear. A solid weekend of a couple hundred lasered and video'd jumps could give us a lot of good information. How should we do this? edit:typos

I'm betting you'd be okay, but I'd be pretty reluctant to try it over dirt.
-
Is your lowish object solid? How bad would a 180 be? I've done a couple slider up PCA's
-
What about the "Hanging Chad" Have you seen that jump yet?
-
Another Chad? Okay, Anvilbrother, you're not allowed to start BASE jumping. We're saturated with Chads here. No more Chads. Two Chads is one too many. Three Chads...

Anybody here actually get a chance to jump the house?
