  1. There's always a way for weird shit to happen while BASE jumping. But... If the pilot chute and bridle are prepared appropriately, there is very little risk that the bridle will entangle with your hand. Unless you're going stowed (short delay) with a tailwind. Then there's the possibility that the bridle can blow under your arm.
  2. If the bridle is routed out of the top of your fist, instead of the bottom, you should be okay. I don't know how cold it is there, but if you can avoid wearing gloves that will reduce the risk of something weird happening. (We jump in below freezing temps and it's okay.) Just make sure your hands are warmed up before you exit and you'll be fine. If you do feel the need to wear gloves, make sure they're thin and allow uncompromised dexterity.
  3. Handheld or stowed? Probably handheld. Did you prepare the bridle so that it exits your hand towards the back of your thumb or the palm? That can make a difference. So can a moderate tailwind.
  4. I think a slider up go-n-throw from 300 feet will be just fine if you have good landing options. It will be scary, but you'll be just fine. Edit: I don't think you'll notice much difference between the different sliders (large mesh/small mesh/sail) with a go-n-throw. I use a small mesh slider on everything. I think where you'd notice the difference is once you're over a couple seconds of freefall.

    Texas...

Okay, when is the best time for me to come visit?
  6. That massive stinger on top, and the other dish array on the adjacent structure is what makes my hair stand up. The Antenna itself looks pretty doable. Do you know what it's transmitting?
  7. I totally agree. But the difference between stepping off with a full length bridle and having your packjob totally stay where you were just standing, I think, could make a difference. Bounding away from the exit point will definitely increase the pendulum effect under canopy. But if I can't make sure the canopy is going to clear the object, maybe it's time for me to go have a beer and re-think the jump. With a light step off the exit point, you will have a couple feet of separation between the canopy and the object once at bridle stretch. If that bridle is only three feet from the anchor to the pins, the packjob will basically be sitting on the object when you hit linestretch and the canopy starts to move. That's the part I'm not sure about.
  8. Because the idea is to remove the extra length from the bridle. If you s-fold it and jump, the bridle pays out as you fall away and you still have the extra length of the bridle. I've often thought about making a short bridle for low Sl jumps. My thoughts are this: The shorter bridle is okay if the object is clean or overhung. The shorter bridle means that the canopy is closer to the object when you reach linestretch. If the object is a smooth water tank, or something where this isn't a concern, it should be okay. If the object is underhung or has potential snagpoints, you need the (couple feet) of clearance the full length bridle gives you. I don't really like the idea of my canopy's tail scraping down the side of the object while I'm falling. On a low bridge or something of that nature, I don't see a real problem with it. I'd still put a large PC on the bridle though. Just my thoughts on the subject.
  9. Yeah... and I'll be seeing you in a couple days!
  10. (Disclaimer: I suck at lockpicking) Every lock I've been able to open, I could open with a couple diamonds and a tension bar. A guy I know, who used to steal cars to fund his college education, told me that a minimal kit would take me far. Speaking of, SBCMac, where's my lockpick set? Edit: Might look Here
  11. Damn... I guess you win. Donuts at the exit point. That's too cool.
  12. Are you serious, there's a tram and a donut stand?
  13. Yeah, well... there's magical fairies that shoot flaming arrows through your canopy on the way down and... make my jump cooler.
  14. Okay, that's pretty cool, but at the King, you can exit, then thread your canopy flight between massive desert spires and fly in close proximity to some of the most radical rock features I've ever seen. Some of the towers have some really unlikely looking formations. Just a badass experience.
  15. I'm not getting sensitive, it's just that this was an intersting thread until politics got involved.
  16. I think if you want to have a conversation about politics or national anthems, you should leave and go have your conversation in the Speakers Corner. Your posts have completely left the topic of BASE jumping.
  17. Give some serious thought to doing the tower jumps next time you have a chance. Off the King Fisher my canopy flight was a minute and eight seconds. Off C-tower, it was two minutes exactly. You'll be extremely hard pressed to find a canopy flight cooler than King Fisher.
  18. Deal! (As long as somebody else fixes the ropes on the Mudd pile)
  19. My guess would be that if Tom removed all jumps from the Perrine, he would still have well over a thousand jumps. If he removed the Perrine from his list of objects jumped, he'd still have over 200 objects. Tom is very well traveled and has jumped stuff I dream about. He might not be the best example of a typical BASE jumper.
  20. So next time I jump it will you show me the easy trail out? I did more bushwhacking than I predicted would be necessary.
  21. Those two jumps (C-tower and mudd pile) are now in my top three "coolest jumps ever" category. It's going to take an ultra cool jump to pass those ones up! Looking around from the summit of those towers, I had to ask the question, "are we truly the lucky ones, or what?" (BTW, thanks for helping us out lastnight Ray! I tell you what, anybody that will drag their ass out of the house when you show up on his doorstep at 11 PM and ask for directions to an antenna... He wasn't packed, but he drove with us over an hour to the site, helped us "access" the inside of the perimeter, and stood there watching the ground freeze (literally) while Katie and I climbed 900 feet to make a jump with temperatures in the 20's. There was a car a short walk away with a heater, stuff to eat and drink, and tunes... but he stayed there shivering his ass off until we were safely on the ground. Anybody that will do that for you, that is a friend. Thanks again Ray.)

    Funny Story

Oh man, that is a good one. Katie laughed her ass off as I read it to her. Remind anyone of similar situations? I know it does for me.
  23. Damn, has it been a year already? Is there still the issue where we need to enter a local zip code? Edit: Okay, when voting, you have to use a local zip code (one of the following): San Francisco / Alameda County Zip Codes: ===================== Alameda 94501 Alameda 94502 Albany 94706 Berkeley 94702 Berkeley 94703 Berkeley 94705 Berkeley 94707 Berkeley 94708 Berkeley 94709 Berkeley 94710 Castro Valley 94546 Castro Valley 94552 Dublin 94568 Emeryville 94608 Fremont 94536 Fremont 94538 Fremont 94539 Fremont 94555 Hayward 94541 Hayward 94542 Hayward 94544 Hayward 94545 Livermore 94550 Livermore 94551 Newark 94560 Oakland 94601 Oakland 94602 Oakland 94603 Oakland 94605 Oakland 94606 Oakland 94607 Oakland 94609 Oakland 94610 Oakland 94612 Oakland 94618 Oakland 94619 Oakland 94621 Piedmont 94611 Pleasanton 94566 Pleasanton 94588 San Leandro 94577 San Leandro 94578 San Leandro 94579 San Lorenzo 94580 Union City 94587
