USPA Helps North Carolina DZ Open (updated 03/06/09)
3331 replied to 3331's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
From the USPA web site. The Triangle Skydiving Center is finally set to open in April following a six-month-long airport access process. The DZ will be located at the Triangle North Executive Airport in Louisburg, North Carolina. After encountering initial resistance from local officials, future DZO Greg Upper contacted USPA for assistance. USPA showed Greg how to best represent his aviation business to local government and convinced the county attorney and airport director to accommodate the drop zone. "I think that having USPA speak with the county attorney and the airport director made the difference,” said Upper. "I'm very grateful for the help provided by their government relations department." The airport, formerly known as the Franklin County Airport, has a 5,500-foot-long runway, a wide-open parachute landing area and is only a short drive from metropolitan Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. Skydivers familiar with Carolina Sky Sports (CSS) will recognize that the new drop zone’s location is only five miles from the former CSS DZ. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. -
Anyone hear about the camera-man who jumps without gear?
3331 replied to medusa's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
The incident at CSS was suicide. The Police investigation found a suicide note at his home. His girlfriend of many years moved out and announced she was Marrying someone else. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. -
Six months off...do I really need to repack my main?
3331 replied to skymama's topic in Gear and Rigging
Both, eh? Yes Both, I have two identical Racers. Both were left at a friends house in Honolulu while I was on the Atoll. A rigger on the North Shore of Oahu would repack both reserves and leave both mains in the bag. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. -

Oppose TSA's LASP proposal - do it NOW
3331 replied to kallend's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
USPA Opposes TSA Large Aircraft Proposal (updated 02/27/09) Today USPA informed the Transportation Security Administration that the skydiving association is adamantly opposed to the TSA proposal to impose new security requirements on larger aircraft, since the measures would be harmful to the sport. The TSA issued the proposal last October, inviting comments until February 27. In comments submitted to the docket, USPA described how existing FAA requirements on jump planes ensure that air traffic control is fully aware of, and in communication with, each jump aircraft. The comments also described how the limited speed, fueled range, and close-in climb and descent patterns of common jump planes should minimize TSA concern. USPA also detailed how the TSA’s proposed requirements on the nation’s 270 reliever airports would be contrary to the very reason the FAA created and funded those airports. The association implored the TSA to establish a government/industry advisory group to take on the issue, noting that the FAA has successfully used advisory groups in the past on very contentious issues. TSA must consider all comments then either adopt the proposal, revise the proposal or withdraw the proposal. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. -

Six months off...do I really need to repack my main?
3331 replied to skymama's topic in Gear and Rigging
You do not need to repack your main. When I was on Johnston Atoll for Five years I would not get to Hawaii for six months, both mains worked just fine. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. -

Take time to read the unsealed order Billy Vance attached to his post. I printed it out and like most legal documents it has to be translated from English to English. Jan Meyer is in the details and surprisingly the name Carbone is there too. I've always believed in poetic justice, it just takes too long. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. -

altimeters-checked baggage or carry on?

My altimeter often attracts attention from TSA. I've watched the screeners open my suitcase pull out the Altimaster II and have a conference while the case with a "Parachute" slides by. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. -

From the USPA web site. UPT Highly Recommends Retrofit (updated 01/15/09) United Parachute Technologies has released a Product Improvement Announcement aimed at all owners of the company’s Vector and Sigma harness and container systems that are equipped with a Collins lanyard and Skyhook reserve deployment device and an automatic activation device. The announcement states that UPT highly recommends that the two modifications be installed on all of their "Sigma Tandem and student systems by the next reserve pack job." The first modification involves the installation of a Reserve Staging Loop, which uses a bungee loop and a bight of the reserve bridle to ensure the reserve container flaps remain closed until the reserve bridle has reached nearly to its full extension. The second modification is the Split Reserve Static Line. The new Split RSL, while maintaining a single connection to the right main riser, isolates the Collins lanyard function from the other two RSL functions on the Skyhook system, thus making an inadvertent left side cutaway, for any reason, far less likely. These two modifications have been developed in response to a recent tandem accident that started with a low main deployment that caused the Cypres AAD to fire and deploy the reserve as the main was inflating. The company will send the retrofit kits for just the cost of the shipping. More information and installation instructions are available at www.uptvector.com Edited by slotperfect to add a link to the details, now available on the UPT website: http://www.unitedparachutetechnologies.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=160 I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

The place was Darbydale Ohio, The club was "The Columbus Skydivers". I did my first jump there in August 1969 while on Active duty with the US Air Force at Lockbourne AFB Ohio, now called Rickenbacker International Airport. I quit jumping with them for several reasons in 1970 and became a member of Greene County in Xenia Ohio. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

Look at the Firebolt from http://jumpshack.com/ before buying anything. I have one, it opens easy and lands soft, very responsive in steering. The Firebolt is the best all around canopy I've jumped since the cruselite by Pareflite. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.
