using an aviation winds aloft forecast,
skysurfcam replied to azureriders's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Scott, Jeeze, it's half 12 in the am here. I got started, but that's way too complex for me, both at this time of night, and if I get stuck with the first tandem of the day, or if I cant throw drifters on a tight demo. I almost bought an e-trex vistafor that, but I've shucked out the bucks for a foretrex 201 instead to play with on the wingsuits Given the following winds from ground patry/GPS/Area forecast, I'd get this with "1/2 the sec X the knots = the distance" I'm not including throw foward, cos I'm assuming the 182 I'll be stuck in this weekend SFC 030/10, 1000 055/15, 2000 060/15, 4000 080/20, 6000 090/15, 8000 110/25, 10000 105/30, 12000 115/35 So the tandem will be out at 12K and open at 4. Call it 45 seconds of freefall. Rough average 25 knots So, 45 x 0.5 x 25 = 562.5 mtrs freefall drift at (say) 100. 4 mins under canopy = 240 sec, wind ave say 070/15, 240/2 * 15 = 1800 mtrs 070. So adjust for magnetic, go 1800 mtrs at 070, then 550mtrs at 100, and get out. Lemme know how that stack up, I'd be curious to see how well it works against your system. The formula was actually taught to me by an old time paratroop JM. It assumes 0 canopy foward speed. (I sould point out that my maths may be shakey due to the time of night/ My BAC.) Cheers, Craig. Because aviation the world over still uses the nautical imperial system, cos aviation distances make complete sense that way. Not ever country is still using imperial on the ground though. Many of us can think in either imperial, metric, or a combination of both. Having grown up using both imperial then metric, I'll take metric on the ground any day. It makes things so easy to be able to count on my fingers... Cheers, Craig. Brother Wayward's rule of the day... Average the wind speed (in knots) and direction (in degrees) for the sectors you need. ie: Freefall, canopy ride. You may need to build two freefall sectors if the winds change radically at a particular height. Estimate the time in freefall and under canopy. Estimate the distance for each of your sectors/vectors using the following: "Half the seconds times the knots, equals the yards (or meters)" Calculate backwards from your landing point to get your optimal opening point, and backwards from there t get your exit point. It's a little rough and ready, but it's served me well on some pressure demo's into tight spots, including one time we were planning on using drifters, but couldn't get clearance to throw them. ATC gave us the winds, and we were able to use the formula, the pilots map and wizz wheel to plot an exit point. These days, I also use it to calculate exit point on the way to height by checking winds on the way to height on the GPS (thankyou America/NASA!) and doing the artimetic in my head. Give it a whirl... Cheers, Craig Brother Wayward's rule of the day... "Never ever ever go skydiving without going parachuting immediately afterwards." 100% PURE ADRENALENS -

I own and jump both, usually at the same time. Unless your going to need to use the higher frames per second on a regular basis, get the rebel xt. Whilst it shoots less fps, it is lighter, clears its buffer faster, takes an easily sourceable remote, and is basically the "sony pc video" of skydiving dslr's. Craig. Sony DVR ==> (MPEG, AVI,...) ????????

I read, re-read, and re-re-read this. Gawd help those that have no idea how much danger they're in. Terrific. You're an experienced (Note the caps...) Big Wall climber. You're not an experienced skydiver. You are endangering yourself and your solo friends. Take the camera off, get some experience as a (Note the caps) Skydiver, and Pull Your Head In. Listen to yourself "I realize that jumping with a camera is dangerous when done incorrectly"" Fact is Jumping is dangerous. Jumping with a camera is more dangerous, and it isnt for novices, no matter what their skill level or ego. A novice jumping a camera is "doing it incorrectly.". Check the records for poeple going in whilst someones wearing a camera, it's a danger above and beyond skydiving. If the folk at your DZ are really encouraging you to jump camera with only 76 jumps, you need to find some more experienced folks... This may explain why you need to ask here for editing tips for the footage you have. C. Of course this may be and hopefuly is just a good troll... Brother Wayward's rule of the day... Observations of a Nationals Video Controller

As an ex-competition cameraman who's retired into gentlemancamerafier status, here's a couple more, 1) carry a spare battery, 2) carry a spare tape, 3) carry a spare camera, 4) Have a way of checking your sight before exit, and do so. 5) Find a way not to get out if it aint right! The easy way for a team to lose points is if the camera isn't right. What would and your team prefer - riding back on the plane on round 10 because the camerathang "caught a handle on a protrusion" and had to fix his/her gear, or a zero 'cause s/he figured the lack of a tally light was probably an anomally Someone on the team should have the job of checking with the camerathang that all is good b4 the team moves to the door. Camerathings arent always that smart (well, not allways), so put some pressure for checking that all is well back on your team mate(s) C. Brother Wayward's rule of the day... Wagga is aboriginal for crow. I'm resonably sure that point is named after a town in Oz names Wagga Wagga, or place of many crows. T'werent me that did it, but I recall an Aussie being on the committee at the time. C. Brother Wayward's rule of the day... Ragnarok, At the risk of being unpopular in a public forum, I have to say that I find your signature line: repugnant. As a citizen of a country who's armed forces are active members of the "coallition of the willing", and are still in Iraq as members of the peacekeeping forces active in Iraq, I trust the members of my country's armed forces to act in a professional manner, within the acccepted rules of combat and peacekeeping. Iraq has a population of well over 25 million, with a small and well organised element of what we would call terrrorists. Terrorists are the enemy. Iraqi citizens are not. Imagine how you'd feel if a non combatant Iraqi suggested in a public forum that it was ok to perform equilivant acts on your brother or sister. Terrorism is abhorrent. So are war crimes. Your signature hovers towards the latter. Let me be clear. I totally support the troops we (All the countries in the C.O.T.W.) have in Iraq. I totally abhore terrorism. I think you need to rethink your sig. Whilst it's jingoistic. its sentiment is dangerous... C. PS Perhaps this belongs at the Bonfire. -

Deuce is right, you'l love it. Don't sweat the reviews from the lens pureists. The kit lens (especially the newer one), is great for someone new to DSLR's. It's sooo much faster than the point press, w a i t, click that digital compacts give. If you cant help yourself later there's lotsa lenses that will give you reason to re-visit the PX, but you'll be adding to your arsenal, rather than replacing the whole weapon. C. Congrat's on the win. Good to see you're getting ahead of the curve by being on top of the rules early. You will need a PAL camera. Good luck at "The Show". C. Brother Wayward's rule of the day... "Never ever ever go skydiving without going parachuting immediately afterwards." 100% PURE ADRENALENS

Pluged on onto my 300D, it wouldnt talk happily, locked up the cam, gave an error 99, also felt pretty cheesy to be honest. Then again, maybe I tried with a baddie. Like ya work! So why worry about erasing? If it's an export to tape for a final, you shouldn't have any timecode issues, just burn over the previous final. Personaly I dont erase anything - the unpaid stuff I shoot is just as important to me as the paid. C. PS Imagine if you'd had footage of Monica L back when "the" story broke. Even better if she'd looked down the barrel and declared "thats better than sex"...

Never ever ever erase a tape. Record pefect black before you use it perhaps, but tape is way too cheap to justify erasing or overtaping real footage. C. Brother Wayward's rule of the day... "Never ever ever go skydiving without going parachuting immediately afterwards." 100% PURE ADRENALENS

Yup. Be warned. The AT-X-Pro works nicely with the the canon DSLR range. The ATX range doesnt. (Get it? AT-X-Pro good, ATX Bad...)
