My wife and I had a very similar discussion yesterday. Started out as maybe we should get a baby rabbit. me-harumph. ummm no. Baby cat? oooh no you dont. Baby dog? we alreday have a dog, and shes a handful. Baby? (I was driving at the time) swerving, tires screeching, couging, etc. So the conversation began... but thats not the important part. After spending the day shopping for a new tv, taking a break a a nearby resturant for food and margaritas, going back to buy a TV. It was decided. No babys of any kind. Why? We love to travel, and have many more places we want to see. We dont feel that we could do the things that we want, and provide a healthy growing environment for anything, much less a child. We do own a house, but where I live, financially it makes sense. House payments are often much less than rent. We do love our little house. Emphasis on little. Read: easy to clean (if you care about a clean house ) I dont call it irresponsible. I call it living life the way I want. So I can be happy. So we can be happy. If other people dont get that. So what. I could care less. Their opinion about my lifestyle doesnt ever appear on my "give a shit" list. Good for you. Enjoy it while you can. In the end YOU have to make the call. But please listen to your peers, and listen to your own voice. I began jumping a Sabre 170, at about 20 jumps with and exit weight of about 190.(do the math) I did the best. Before you know it I was crankin 270's ans surfing my ass off. (if you can do that w/ a 170) the I decided I needed to go faster at about 270 jumps. Put around 35 jumps on a cobalt 135, but I thought it was too "touchy" Then I found a Nitro 120 (which Im still jumping). I loved it, It has surf for days (for me). But as time wore on people kept telling me I was too close, too low, too aggresssive, and overloaded. The friday before WFFC 2003 I hooked it low, and was very lucky. I only shattered my left ankle. Check me out on the WFFC video, very early on, w/ my left foot up and my crutches. I had to have surgery. I cant run long distances any more like I used to. I still jump that canopy, but I have a newfound respect for it. I only sorry i learned the hard way. The above is my story. and no less. As a fellow skydiver, I ask you to please be careful. This is NOT ment to be a discussion of current events. It is although, ment to be a discusion of how we as a group and individuals deal with the loss of life that is associated with our sport. I remember, vividly, a light-hearted conversation I had with fellow skydivers on or about my 14th jump, only my 3rd weekend skydiving. I was told, in a most solem tone, by jumpers still thousands of jumps my senior, that if you stay in this sport long enough you see your friends, you'll see your friends get hurt, and you'll see you frineds die. No ifs ands or buts. Period. I took this with a grain of salt. Feeling that I could deal with that if it should happen. And it has. More than once. I have seen a 182 go down through trees full of my friends, and all survive. Ive seen broken bones, ambulences, and recieved that call. I seem to take it in stride. It hurts, but in the end, I was told to expect it. It is the life we live. That is the chance we take. So I ask. What do you do? How do YOU deal? I say AMEN (even though I'm not relegious) I say be safe to my friends, and I say this is the life we chose, and Im still happy to be part of it. Blue skies to all of you. this past year was my slowest to date. Mainly b/c of money/time, etc. But the year before it did spend a good bit of time skydiving and running up my CC billsz. But now it summer, so im back at it!
