Is it inside or outside the fridge? Most units have catch pans both inside and outside the units. These can collect water/food ect. When that stuffs goes off, you get a smell. if it was refrigerant leaking, it would not cool well, and eventually quit cooling completely. Freon has a strong smell too, and it would become more pronounced when the unit kicked on (most likely).
