  8. I have an older version of this one High point: It's a Sony. Firewire ports for dasiy chaining devices, or just a fast connection. Its fast for just over $100! The Nero package is good, and for about $35 (I think) you can upgrade the suite and have music ripping, and some other stuff. Ive made 50 or 60 full to short length DVDs, and lord only knows how many music, data, or back up CDs Ive made. 11. Im not inclined to agree. Just last weekend I had to fly upwind for a good bit, toyed with my brakes, rears, full flight. It "felt" like I was making similar ground coverage with a light (1 -3" of deflection) rear input vs. full flight. I should really come up for a visit, so I got someone to gauge this off of.
  12. "It's getting off the point." I fail to see how: pushing for those who are arrogant, and unsafe should not be tolerated. insisting that EVERYONE take some canopy training. figting to get EVERYONE to follow the current rules. Claiming that is up to each and every one of us... is off the point. But so be it if you feel that way. "Swooping is not a crime." Nope, sure aint. "Swooping into traffic is culpable negligence at best." NEVER have I ever clamied that "swooping into traffic" is safe. EVER. Negligence? Could be, so is running a yellow light, not de-icing your steps, and other careless activities. But culpable negligence is off the point. It's a result of those that know, FAILING to act. It takes DZOs, S&TAs, staff, and the skydiving coumminty acting on those who would be "negligible". That is prevention. 'Last time I checked, low man (or woman) STILL had right of way, but being right doesn't help if you are dead." You bet, never have I once EVER suggested different. EVER. If you're below me, its your right, but dont hold in brakes and make 'S' turns on final and screw the canopies stacked up behind you. Mutual understanding and respect, it will take us a long way. "Put your own life at risk all you want, BUT if people won't voluntarily refrain from endangering others, then rules are needed. The evidence suggests that rules are needed." We put our lives at risk every time be get on that plane, every time we exit. We assess the risk, and we decide. Should you have to assess the risk of someone flying their canopy into you? Nope. Even if all HP landings stopped would you STILL have to assess that risk? You bet. There are rules in place, enforcement of the current rules will go a long way. How many people fly the prescribed patteren for your DZ every time? How many chase the wind indicator? How many use brakes or 'S' turns on final? Education will take you the rest of the way. You couldnt calculate the movement of a body around another until someone showed you the way. How can we fly safely unless there is someone to show us how varied our canopies fly and what are accepted as safe techniques? You dont want me killing you, and I dont want you killing me. We have that in common. Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #865
  13. Im not going to discuss the AAD poriton b/c there are some unique issue with HP landings and AADs, and well I'd rather just talk about the alti. Our sport has many tools. How you choose to use them is ultimately up to you. There are some tools that many feel are mandatory, I'd say the alti is one of them. Lets see Ive got
  14. Why thank you. Im glad you have set me straight. Well since you took ONE LINE out of a series of posts, the context I was speaking of no longer applies. Im glad you went to college to learn just how it affects people. Of course it affects people. Its age, but in the context of my conversation it does not. Why? Because I see the same arrogant, self-centered, un-compromising personalities in young and old. Exactly the same. Thats why I say age has no bearing. Understanding how age affects us is great, understanding how to teach to different age groups, thats a differrent ball of wax. Oh, and my job is to teach people who have been in our industry for only a few months up to and beyond 3 decades how to sell our products. Adult education. Now youre talking statistics. Auto insurance companies use actuaries, expensive modeling software, and a little common sense. Problem is, they can only catch an average, and in a world of billions the anomolies can number in the millions. Those companies dont care about age, or knowledge, or learning. The care about $$! So, they look at their models, determine the age bracket that costs them the most and charges them more. Theres no progression there. Thats not helping anyone but themselves. So to bring it all back to the topic on hand. Financials drive this sport, lets face it, fast planes and nice facilities cost $$$. DZs are looking at their bottom line and making decisions based on that, NOT the progression of the sport. But, in their defense, theyre just like that insurance company, they're a business, they're not busting their ass because it's happy-go-lucky-fun-time. So, eliminating that portion of the sport reduces their liability, BUT it does nothing but hurt the sport because we still have not fixed the problem. They just sent it elsewhere. It's up to us, you and I, to fix this. If you(I'm not directing this at anyone) think "I'll be fine", "Ive been this sport long enought to...", "that guy hosed my swoop...", "those old timers dont know what theyre talking about", and many more weve all heard, you need to seriously consider attending a training course. If you think you're too good, good enough, not good enough, you need to seriously consider a training course. Safe landings.
  15. yes, but hippie, if you stay up in the wind longer you will cover more ground. hence the hanging in brakes in a downwind situation. Let me preface this by saying: Im going to do some more playing around with this. It "feels" to me that I decend less on rears than in moderate to deep brakes. I get this "feel" by making those long spots back to the DZ. I'll admit, now I wanna go play with each flying mode upwind and downwind and checking my alti to see exactly whats happening with my decent rate. 19. Im of the opinion that brakes are will provide a pilot (loaded 2.1 or higher) with a slow decent (for an Xbrace) but little ground coverage. This depends on your winds (headwind or tailwind). I feel that rears and wide rears are not so different. At a loading of 2.18. IMHO mild to moderate rear inputs gives me my best glide ratio for light to moderate wind conditions in both directions. But the again, I've so much to learn.

  21. I'll tell ya what. I'll come to the Farm. You teach me what you got. Then you come to Skydive Atlanta, I teach you what I got. You in? I have no doubt you have many things I can learn! Even if you are a pomme bastage! As for this weekend, its SDA's annaversary weekend, and Pinion is organizing freefly ways. Im IN on that SHIZZLE! I need to stop being such a one DZ'er and come visit, I likes The Farmers too!
  22. I'll tell you what dick, you sign up for Hippie teaching, I'll sign up for Ogre learning! Lord knows, I dont know shit about flying video! We can teach each other!? Deal? 23. No, youre not a dick for expecting the same respect you gave that canopy. It's just natural, what puts you above those that make a bad name for us, is the fact that you made that evaluation. You and I are not so different, we want progression, safety, and fun. Its only just frustration, its a fact of life. You saw, you evaluated, you decided, the two of you lived. This is what I want. Evaluate, decide, live. Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #865
  24. OK. so you folks that are responding to me have LOTS more jumps than I. You also have MANY more jumps than others reading this post. You have spent years and thousands of jumps perfecting your "pattern". If I asked you what altitudes do you initiate your downwind, base, and final legs. I'll bet you could tell me within 100' or so. If you cant. Come see me, I'll do my best to show you different, and you can do yours. The fact is, you've had years to perfect your approach. BUT, how many of you practice a HP downwind, base and turn to final every available and SAFE time? I have to admit, I have learned more having to pick my outs, and fly a 90, 90, 90 pattern, than flying my HP approach. I have a new appreciation for those working to make that happen. I think each and every one of you have something to teach me, but I'll be I can teach you something too. Which of you has the sack enough to come see what I've got to offer? I think we ALL have a UNIQUE perspective and idea of our sport and how it should work. Let's not forget, not everyone has 3000+ jumps and your experience. Everyone has to start somewhere. Giving them a reference skill set, will put them in a position to be safer, and more aware than what is happening now. Anyone disagree? 25. Im not talking about looking for traffic, Im talking about YOUR landing pattern. If you dont have any way to measure "where" you are in your pattern how can you know if you're high/low, long/short? If using your eyes was the best way, we wouldnt use altimeters now would we? If your eyes were the best bet we wouldnt use audibles to back up the visual altimeters would we? I encourage/challenge you to evaluate your landing pattern and really evaluate how you determine your playground, entry to downwind, base and final legs. You have a lot of jumps Bill, I'd imagine you use ground references, and visual cues to tell you where you're at in your pattern. If you do this, then youre already using, in a somewhat modified version, of what I describe. But what do you do at a dew DZ? Those ques are gone. Mind you, this is only ONE of MANY tools that should be used by pilots to determing their "slot" in the pattern, and help them fly a consistent, predictable pattern.
