Youre right. She's with Emmit, Al, and Lauren who jump at Sebastian in the winter. They were all supposed to be there today. Tara is in Sebastian now and has asked if anyone has heard from any of them. No one has. I guess no news is good news. I didnt regognize any of the names when she told me, and neither did I write them down. I just remember that it was sposed to be some peeps from Xkeys. Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #865

Read the italics portion of my post. A) Sorry I didnt include the subject of her bulletin: "HELP!" B) its not like her to be short. That girl talks A LOT. C) She's not one to miss school or mess with that, she very dedicated to her education. C) MySpace is NOT how she typically communicates, especially in broadcast fashion. So, in summary: You cant have a good friend in a 3rd world country, "stuck" and then then nothing without being a little worried. I dont care who you are. Venezuela aint a walk in the park. Somebody had a portable one. Yes, portable. Down at Skydive Dallas. Maybe its Jon's. I dont remember. We were hanging out eating dinner in Johnny K's trailer when they fired it up outside. Some of the folks freaked! Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #865

Ok for those of you who know her, aka Rockstar, she sent out a bulletin on myspace a few days ago: Subject: HELP!! Stuck on a island in Venezuela called Margarita Island. dont really know when we can get off. So I will see everyone when I get back to the states sometime hopefully. Please let CSU know that I am unable to get to 1st day of classes as of right now. Jess Both I and another friend requested info to help her with no response. Has anyone heard from her since Jan 2? What about you Venezuelan jumpers? Did you catch up with her at your boogie? Im pretty sure she went down there with some folks from Xkeys, too. Maybe some of your friends would know whats going on. Any help would be appreciated. Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #865

Swoopers vs. Non-Swoopers in the Pattern
yardhippie replied to kkeenan's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Thats bullshit. Here's the way it works- Either you've figured out that you can't trust anyone up there, and that counting on another jumper to perform in a certain way in order for your personal plan to work out is a giant mistake. In this case, you have no one but yourself to blame when things don't go how you want. If you haven't figured that out yet, then you have no place to yell at anyone. That guy is a douche. Definite douche. Its rare I say anthing to anyone, but one of my goals for this year is to change that. I also plan to address it in a calm, and helpful manner. Being agressive and loud will only breed resentment. Ian has a nice approach to people in those situations. (When he doesnt have a corn cob up his ass ) He'll walk up to them, ask their name, how was their dive, etc, and then TALK to them. We cant expect to accomplish anything with yelling. We should really educate you in proper SEC manners. If a SEC team goes to the championships, you gotta root for them. Especially if they're playing some crap school like Ohio! if i have a great dive and level out at 20ft
yardhippie replied to airborne82nd's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I'll try an help a little. Ive been working with Ian and some others since I came to ATL in 05. I am understanding that the speed of your rotation has as much to do with your plane out altitude as your initiation altitude. With all the discussion of landing patters going on now, I dont want to start that up here, but you asked about using the harness to keep it in the dive. Well that would continue your rotation. So, if you are performing a 180, maybe you end up at 200. This could potentially put you on a collision course with another pilot assuming all should be landing parallel with your 180 flight path. The opposite side of that coin is stopping your rotation early because you are low. Do you have an out should you only be able to make a 100 or 150 degree turn? Dont worry if your high sometimes. Trust me Ive flow 20' over the heads of a few of the respected swoopers on here. They might laugh at ya, but then they'll asky you what you did wrong, and discuss what to do next time. Ive learned that im gonna get a bit of joking and goofing around if im high in a turn, but its a different kind of feeling when you smack the earth. Sometimes even with the best responders to valid questions may have a difficult time describing maneuvers or concepts over a forum. These are some things that have worked for me: Talk to competent pilots who have seen you fly. Listen to what they have to say. Work on one thing at a time, for example: when Im on final here, I should finish my turn on this line. Patience: it really is a virtue. If you get frustrated, go do something else. if your mind isn't 100%. go do something else. If youre tired, go do something else. See above. Oh, and just another question. Can you perform A 90 to final and be consistant with accuracy and plane out? Safe swoops. Maybe Ian will post something up here. He's pretty sharp on that Velo stuff. Ive jump a couple different sizes of Velos with both stock, and Joe and Mel's RDS. I wouldnt consider any of the openings bad. Although, when the full RDS is on, I dont like going to terminal. Hmm... I dont think Ive helped at all here. Swoopers vs. Non-Swoopers in the Pattern
yardhippie replied to kkeenan's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Having 1000 jumps just means that you had the time and the money to make the skydives. It doesn't stop you from being a dick. Well now were talking about education of dicks. IMHO, teaching dicks anything "new" or "different" is like shaving with a cheese grater. It doesnt mean it cant be done. Its just met with great resistance. This I seem to find is not just in our sport. It has to do with anything in life where someone feels they "know it all". I see it in my job constantly. The problem has become, and I am guilty of it in my job, we just catch the ones we can, leaving the dicks alone. It makes our lives, for the moment, easier. Yet in the long run, we are probably hurting ourselves. Possibly literally. A few courses of action need to be taken. The majority of the skydiving "population" must confront dick about his pattern. Dont take no shit from dick. If dick dont like it, the DZO needs to send dick packing. but thats only a small portion of the issue. We do have young pilots that dont understand and are afraid to ask, or dont even know to ask. So we have a muti-faceted problem where ALL sides must be addressed. Its not a one answer cures the problem question. Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #865 -

Ummm... then who ever chose that as the landing area chose poorly... moving the landing area may be a better solution rather then accepting downwind landings under some conditions (wind directions) rather then flying over obsitcals short final... but that would probably mean landing elsewhere and having to take that long, un-cool, walk back to the landing area and/or not being close to where the students, whuffos & visitors hang-out so one could wow them with cool landings. Well I wasnt suggesting that downwind was the only choice. If you have a LZ that has a prescribed landing direction of N or S, primairily because thats what the prevailing winds do. then you have runways, taxiways, etc that follow those prevailing wind leaving you with plenty of real estate for landing areas. so you get a day where the wind is out of the west. land crosswind prefably into a quartering headwind. B/c lets face it, the wind is never constant, and rarely is a direct cross. IMHO: if youre there that day, dont want to land crosswind in the pre-determined direction, dont jump. For our DZ this is the case for the main landing area, BUT we have an alternate landing area that is well suited to "into the wind" landings, if one desires. As far as the "long un-cool walk" I dont care. i'll land safe before I'll land on. Swoopers vs. Non-Swoopers in the Pattern
yardhippie replied to kkeenan's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Damn Skippy... Now the fun part comes in...explaining to people who dont want to listen why they have to do it Dave Well to put it in time constraints. Say you have a King Air with a full load (14) On that load is a 4 way belly, a 3 way belly , 2 - 2 way freefly, and a tandem with video. A fairly average load for our DZ. Given a 6-7 second separation (please lets not get into the separation argument here) The first belly group opens in approximately 60 seconds, say at 3500 feet (im using rounding to make life easier) the second group at say 67 seconds of the first groups exit. The third (being a freefly), takes 55 seconds from exit putting them 69 seconds since the first exit. then the next group at 76 seconds. So only 16 seconds separates the openings of the first group and the last. I am omitting the videographer in this case. Given a mix of canopy sizes throughout all groups, were talking maybe 500- 1000 feet of separation between the first openers and the last. If the lightly loaded canopys didnt perform an radical altitude deminishing manuvers, and the HP canopies flew full flight, braked, or rear riser approaches, the highly loaded guys are still gonna get down faster. So you have your play ground somewhere near where you'd enter the downwind leg. Being an alert canopy pilot you recognize the smaller and/or larger canopies, and adjust your flight (braked, full, or risers) appropriately as you entered the downwind leg. I know as soon as I open and get my stuff stowed, Im looking for whos below me, who hanging in brakes, whos spiraling down to my level or past, and doing my damdest to adjust my flight to accomodate all those in the pattern. If theres someone below me and my swoop is unsafe, i'll adjust my patter to fall in with the other traffic and abort the swoop. So be it. I'll live to make another. My point being: We have a matter of seconds between first and last openers. If we are all aware of the prescribed landing pattern for that DZ, AND we pay as much attention to flying our wings as we do pulling on time. We can surely reduce the amount of accidents that happen. Maybe at some DZs, but what if "landing into the wind created a hazard such as flying over an active runway, or the old rule of "dont fly over anything you dont want to land ot" I just dont belive that their can be and end-all be-all rule for a landing patter. Suggested guidelines. Of course. Each Dz, IMHO, must make its own plan and rules, then stick with it. Again I find that there might be exceptions to this. Such as: all swoopers landing in the designated swoop area agree that downwinding is the pattern. Now if that interferes with the pattern of an alternate patter, it wont work. Other wise, we should never had canopies flying toward each other. My feelings exactly. We have to put the word out that repeted voluntary infractions will not be tolerated. There are a couple forums for Subaru (what I own) One specific here in Atlanta. I just do my research on there. As we do, you two! I've been informed that we WILL be attending the festivities, so it's pretty much a lock. I mean, who am I to argue with the boss? Now that we have successfully hijacked kel's "Im stuck in Tailand with a messed up ankle so I cant come home" thread. Dont argue with the boss. When I do that it gets me in trouble.
