Yes, there is a no-sew method, but be CAREFUL with that and make sure you THUROUGHLY understand it... I've seen more RSLs with that set-up mis-routed then the more traditional ring on riser style... AND/OR... I've seen more then once when someone is trying to "helpful" towards someone during the ride to altitude with a no-sew RSL set-up and actually mis-route it for them when it was correct.

do what BASE jumpers do - pack the PC inside the main. One will have to be an absolute MORON to try to jump it. This way it's packed for transport, not for deployement. You're right... and I think I meet that guy... he rode his motorcycle to the DZ wearing his rig like a "back pack"... he didn't want one of his chutes to come out while toolin' down the highway... so... he stuffed his main pilot chute way into the pocket and zip-tied his reserve handle to his main lift web... problem is... he didn't remember to un-do any of that before getting on the first load at the DZ... only smart thing he did was remember to turn on his Cypres... this is NO SHIT... I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it AND listened to him fess-up on the ride back to the packing area in the back of bad-spot-bill's truck.

What problems can they introduce? I have them and I'm curious about that statement. They seem very passive. Yes and no. One example... there were some issues with one of the early "knock off", after market, imitations of the original RWS design where there was an unfinished "end" at the "top" of the insert which COULD (in theory) cut the yellow plastic of the excess cut-away cable if it extended past the end or the hard housing... i.e. create a potential "snag"... also, some designs have been "suspect" to the hard housing slipping out of the sleeve its in on the riser and, thus, interfering iwht the 3-Rings, maybe... just two examples, caveat... somewhat real, somewhat based in perception.

Well, I can't say as I strongly agree or disagree with that... but consider this... 1) I've experienced many an opening that "turns" and/or opens into a line twist or two and basically you just cuss and kick out the twists. No big deal. I've also experienced an SBOS (Spinning Ball of Shit) malfunction that started out felling like the former and my initial thought was "I got it, I got it", but then things went to a whole different order of magnitude with one side of my canopy collapsed and me spinning under it on my back in less then a revolution... "no, I don't got it"... believe me, until you are there, you can't understand it... cut-away and reserve ride... AND... while YES, I got the main canopy cutaway, the cutaway forces were more then what I anticipated and, admittedly, this was on my old rig that does not have inserts in the main risers, but is also equipped with Type 8 main risers... which leads me to #2... 2) I'm glad the experience I had ended up in a clean cutaway and uneventful reserve deployment and reserve ride... I'm glad the violence of the afore mentioned SBOS mal wasn't double or tripple in violence to where cutting away could have been an issue... in other words... you don't want to find out the hard way that you should have had main risers with hard housing inserts when you could have used them. Rather then trying to get them installed in your current main risers, its probably more practicle to just buy new ones built that way from the ground up.

... what if I have them on my new rig, but not my old rig... can I vote "Yes and No"??? Actually, Chris, IMO, hard cable housings in the main risers to stow the extra cut-away cable length are a good thing... 110% necessary... No... but still a good thing. Same thing, different words, several evolutions in the sport / gear (Type 17 risers +Smaller / Highly loaded / High Performance canopies = potential for a violent spinning mal with serious riser twists = Increased cut-away forces... to name a few) basically brought about the theory & implementation of hard cable housings in the main risers for the extra cut-away cable length. Do they 100% guarantee you'll never have a hard cut-away under a spinning mal? No. Do they increase your chances of being able to cut-away from a spinning mal since they're there to help prevent that extra cut-away cable length from being "locked in" twisted up risers... especially Type 17s? Yes... IMO. Yes, they also add a slight bit of additional complexity to your gear that you have to be mindful of... are they manufactured correctly?... is the extra cut-away cable length inserted correctly (i.e. inside the hard cable housing and not in-between it and the fabric sleeve?)... however, regarding the second one, someone who cannot take the brief amount of time to verify that when hooking up their main or doing a gear check for themselves is too stupid to live. I take it you bought that rig used?? Are your main risers Type 17? (skinny ones) Do you have any idea how many jumps the main risers have on them if they are Type 17s? You'll get lots of arguements and advice one way or the other, but many folks (myself included) replace Type 17 risers after about 500 jumps or about when ever they do a line kit on their canopy. If you were to call up Sunpath for a new set of main risers now, you'd get ones with hard cable housings in them. One more OBTW... next time your at the DZ... have a rigger or experienced jumper show you where the packing data card and manufacture's label is on your rig... or go look at it know if you know where it is... then you can see and be positive when your rig was built! I bought my Jav in 03 and it came with Type17 main risers with hard cable housings in them. I suspect yours is maybe an 02... or maybe you've got Type 8 main risers?... or, if you did buy the rig used, the main risers are not original?

Javelin Hard housings - A little clarification

True and Velocity Sports' (aka Infinity) main risers with hard housing inserts for the extra cut-away cable length are good too... but given Sunpath's "sand in pussy-ness" over RSLs on their gear... I wouldn't go putting anything but main risers with hard housings made by Sunpath on a Jav or Odyssey! BobD... also true... but come-on, someone so careless and rushed to not take the few seconds to properly assemble and verify the equipment that they are using to SAVE THEIR LIFE or SAVE SOMEONE ELSE'S LIFE after JUMPING OUT OF AN AIRPLANE is hardly an argument against something that could trip them up if they don't take even the slightest bit of care or seek out the slightest bit of help from someone knowlegeable... in short... they're too stupid to live. -

No. It's called "stacked implants". They put one set of implants under the muscle and another set on top, over the muscle... how else do you think some of these gals with what appear to be basketballs implanted in their chest get that way??

nah... that stuff is mostly water (i.e. saline). i wonder if they pulled her implants out as part of the autopsy? think of the money one could make selling them on eBay... there were 4 of them, the way i understand.

True, but make sure you get some supervision from a qualified rigger. Like ND and others up thread have said... some very experienced folks have sewn their canopy to their container by accident... and there was a thread somewhere here where someone posted a picture of a reserve they opened were someone else had previously done some hand taking on the rig w/ the reserve still closed and tacked the reserve bridle to one of the reserve flaps; thankfully the owner of the rig hadn't needed to use their reserve before turning it in for a repack. Wouldn't want to turn a simple repair on a main D-bag into something that can kill. Heck, its so easy to take a D-Bag / PC off of a main and put it back on, I can't imagine not taking it off of the canopy just for ease of getting it under the sewing machine.

What Bytch said... but if you do the triple F thing... that will be 3 cases of beer + 1 penalty case for assessed for owing a back-log of 3 or more cases. Anyway... yes... I've been in a similar situation... even more so over since getting my rigger's ticket... having jumped a new rig for the first time that I assembled and packed both the reserve and main.

Not to disagree with with what TomB, Strato, Bytch and others have said up-thread... but I've also seen packers who more then once have been known to "forget" to cock people's pilot chutes, don't unstow sliders & not stow brakes correctly... yet still get their rig packed up and off the person goes on the next load. Again, if you Pay a Packer, You Take Your Chances. Also... there's another saying... If you want something done right, do it yourself. Anyway, I understand that if you're team training or at a competition or just too stinkin' rich to pack your own trash, then you're gonna pay a packer...
