  2. Quicktime files are Quicktime files and can be read by Quicktime software on either Macs or Windows machines. I think one possibility is what Saskia asked you about above. I think that if the DVD was burned as a data disk it should be readable on a DVD-ROM equipped computer of either persuasion. I haven't tested my data DVD-Rs on PCs so have had no experiences good or bad. Can you network them together, transfer the file and then try opening it? That would tell you if it was a file problem or a drive problem. I seem to recall burning CDs as "hybrids" using Toast so that they could be played on either platform. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  3. yes...quite a bit of it...I have used some of it for videos but not too much. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  4. Well, here is what I found out was going on....Thanks to Steffen at Larssen & Brusgaard... The Serial port was "possessed" by my Palm Pilot Hot Sync Manager and unavailable to the Jumptrack interface. I took Hot Sync Manager out of my StartUp folder, rebooted...and voila! I was able to download. The way that you can tell if the serial port is controlled/unavailable is if the Ready light is on BEFORE you click "Connect" in the program. Here is the text of Steffen's e-mail to me that allowed me to solve this problem: -------->>>>>> Dear Murray Stevens I'm sorry to read that you are having problems with the PC-Interface and Jump-Track. For me to better support you please reply to the following questions. 1. Is the red light on the rear of the PC-Interface off BEFORE you press the "Connect" button in Jump-Track? (If the red light on the rear of the PC-Interface is on before you press connect, then another device driver is occupying the Com-port, and you need to remove this device driver when using the PC-Interface. I know that palm-pilots does this, and also some digital camera's.) 2. Does the red light on the rear of the PC-Interface turn on AFTER you press the "Connect" button in Jump-Track? Regards Steffen Kristensen Larsen & Brusgaard -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  5. Thanks Scotty, (again) I will have to consider taking a look...I find getting appropriate music is very difficult...and the right music is so important. I will take a look at the other programs mentioned that I can play with for free to see if I have any aptitude at all for this. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  6. I just picked up a ProTrack and the Jumptrack software and interface. I cannot download to the computer. I have entered the registration code, I connect the Protrack, the interface led glows "ready", I click on connect, Press "Set" while at the PC window on the Protrack....and nothing happens. I have set it to all 4 Com ports with no results. The serial port works because I sync my Palm Pilot with it. I'm thinking it is some sort of Windows thing..HP 2100 Omnibook, Win 98SE or the interface is nfg. Any thoughts/ideas/experiences? -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  7. Scotty, Do you use it to put soundtracks together for videos? Are you a musician? What is the learning curve like? Murray -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  8. Apple has just made Soundtrack available separately for $299 US. This is an audio program that comes with 4000 royalty free loops that was previously packaged with Final Cut Pro. The Apple website page on Soundtrack says "Be a professional musician...or just sound like one!" I'm interested in knowing how this program might work for a non-musician....a definite non-musician in my case Cheers, -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  9. Yep, I saw a rig with quick ejectors this weekend...hadn't seen them for two decades. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  10. I just got a Bonehead Optik and a D-Box for my PC-1. I also put a Diamond .3 on the PC-1. After a dozen jumps on it I have to say it is excellent for videoing RW while part of the jump and for coach/AFF jumps. I don't have a ringsight but have to say that with the Diamond .3 it hardly seems necessary. I did a couple 1 on 1 PFF (Canadian AFF type jumps) with it this weekend and it was great. Excellent view of the student for critiquing and reviewing the jump. I don't notice it in freefall ... the camera is light and the chincup keeps everything from moving around. I'm very pleased with it. Oh yeah, I also have a Cameye II...and it is a very handy piece of gear. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

    AA

Good on you for helping someone out JT. AA doesn't always work, it isn't for everybody, but it worked for me...nearly 23 years now. I am certain I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for AA. I certainly wouldn't have our 2 beautiful little boys, nice house and great job if I hadn't sobered up. My drinking cost me one marriage and having my first son raised my a stepdad.....and I'm very lucky that is all the price I paid. Many others have paid terrible prices as the cost of their drinking. I hope your friend is stopping before the price he pays gets too high....and I think that with a friend like you and the other friends he is about to make he has a good chance. Good luck!! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  12. At long last, here is the video of my friend;s camera going in at ZHills last winter. I apologize for the file size..18.7 mb. I also forgot to set it up to stream so you'll likely have to wait for it to finish downloading before playing. If you frame by frame it near the end, you'll see it fall by canopies just before impact. 17. Phone around to some local video production type places and you'll find a place that will do it for you. I know I can have it done here in Saskatoon so there should be lots of places in Montreal. The one I talked to here in Saskatoon will transfer to DV tapes which makes editing, etc much more feasible. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  18. I love gif #2...the moment of KA-Ching! How high were you when you chopped? Congrats on saving yourself. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  19. As a long-time PFF instructor (since 1988), I definitely recommend against students doing PPCTs. They learn to pull and do their practise throws on their first PFF dive. It is far more desirable to have them exit the aircraft relaxed and this is more easily done by having them just exit and not have any other tasks. 2 IADs for some people is ok but 3-6 is more realistic. IMO -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  20. Old Parachutist or Skydiving would be where I saw the account of the cross-country. Unfortunately I tossed my Skydiving mags the last time I moved (I've been a subscriber since 1981) -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  21. This is maybe not germane, but I believe a cross-country over the Channel was done many years ago...early 80's...by people dumping high with screamer uppers happening. If he had high enough upper winds he may be able to pull if off with the hard wing..depending on the glide ratio of the wing. Canopies of the early 80's likely didn't have a 3:1 glide ratio. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
  22. Bill Cole...who posts on here as "Chuteless" did 2 (I believe) chuteless jumps way back when. I don't know exactly how Bill's jumps were done...I vaguely remember hearing that another jumper held a reserve that he attached to his harness and then opened....perhaps he will tell us the stories with all the facts correct...hey Bill..fill us in!! The chuteless jump where the long risers were used was done by, I believe, Jimmy Tyler. I could be wrong on the name. Pictures of Jimmy Tyler's jump are in Skies Call 3, photos 41-46. He flew up behind the other jumper and attached himself to the other jumper's harness with clips held/attached to his hands. After opening, extra webbing was released and he was suspended about 12-15 feet below the other jumper. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

  24. Well, that transcript was very illuminating. Jim Rome doesn't have the foggiest idea about what he is talking about...not a clue. Not a shred of a clue about our sport. But, that doesn't surprise me. He is typical of what passes for journalism. My opinion of too much journalism is summed up in the following quote from Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" ..... "....Why bother with newspapers, if this is all they offer? Agnew was right. The press is a gang of cruel faggots. Journalism is not a profession or a trade. It is a cheap catch-all for fuckoffs and misfits - a false doorway to the backside of life, a filthy piss-ridden little hole nailed off by the building inspector, but just deep enough for a wino to curl up from the sidewalk and masturbate like a chimp in a zoo-cage." Don't waste your energy being angry at a no-brain shit disturber like Jim Rome.....save it for skydiving and celebrating life. Blue skies, Murray Stevens, FB 1417
  25. So, last weekend the planets all lined up or something....I managed to get over to a friend's and get my D-Box mounted on my Bonehead Optik. (I'd post pictures but it is in my car and my wife has the car at work) On Sunday I went out to the DZ and managed to get in three jumps with my new baby. Lots of fun! it must be nearly 15 years since I jumped a still camera and I was pleasantly surprised how little I noticed the extra weight of the sidemounted PC-1. Truly not an issue at all. I noticed a bump of riser against D-Box on one opening but otherwise nothing. I am jumping a Stiletto 135 that I had relined over the winter and it is behaving itself quite nicely...slow openings, on heading or a 90 degree turn just when it finished opening. Some of you may remember giving me advice on my squirelly openings over the winter...it seems that the reline and other repairs (two topskins) have made a definite difference. I am using a Diamond .3 and intend on just wearing this camera every skydive...4-way, coach jumps, whatever comes along..over the summer. I'm sure that as time goes along I will be moving my head less and my eyes more during skydives but it is neat to have the footage that this lens allows me to capture. A few more mods to the D-Box are in order to enable me to use a remote and plug in to the A/V out but I'm very happy with the results thus far. Thanks to everybody on here for contributing to my and others' questions...I've learned a lot from everybody over the winter. It's been a real education for me after being very inactive for the last 8-9 years! In many ways I feel like a beginner again after 23 years and 2100+ jumps...which is great because how can you get tired of something that still makes you feel like a beginner after 20+ years! And yes...for the first time in years I am glad to be buying beer! Blue skies everybody, -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
