Count me in as a Canadian that is furious with our government's refusal to stand with the USA and commit some of our meager resources. The state of our military is a disgrace....not due to the soldiers as we have good ones, but due to the ruling Liberal Party's gutting of military budgets year after year after year. Jean Chretien has made me ashamed to be a Canadian by his gutless fencesitting, equivocation and refusal to stand with our neighbour. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I remember hearing about free-stowing when I started jumping. People quit after a fatality or two or three caused by lines coiling around a flap and horseshoeing the main. Another causative factor in these fatalities were flaps with large stiffeners on the ends that really lent themselves to creating a securely tied half hitch. (Due to the shape of the main flaps Racers were considered to be better rigs to free stow.) Not a good idea in my mind. I think that the general principle is to get the lines off your back as quickly as possible. I think that as long as the rubber bands hold the lines long enough to get them out of the pack tray they have done their job...but you want the locking loops to hold until everything is under tension. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

What not to do (how the Aggie almost died)
murrays replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Aggie and Ron, thanks for the reminder. Despite having started jumping in 1980 I just entered the ZP world last year and started jumping a Stiletto. The younger guys on the dz have been great at teaching me landing techniques, etc. but, most importantly, have also told me what to do with a spinning line-twisted Stiletto...CHOP IT! I had several episodes of spinning canopy on opening...one of which I rode to 1000' before straightening it out with the toggles. You get low way too fast on these canopies. Aggie - I've used my reserve 5 times when I had to and done 3 intentional cutaways...I have great faith in the riggers I use and in the reserve itself. Don't be afraid to pull the silver handle. Perhaps you could arrange to do an intentional cutaway when you have the PD demo reserve and fully round out your education. I'll add my first square owned....a Cobra 10. This was a Stratostar copy made by National. Very hard openings, landings not much better. When I sold this after making about 80 jumps on it and got a Pegasus I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The Pegasus was sooooo nice in comparison. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I see that Al Gore has joined Apple's Board of Directors. The article says he is a Final Cut Pro user....which is kind of cool. Although I'm not a Gore fan, this is an interesting Board appointment. Hopefully it will help my favourite computer company. This has absolutely nothing to do with Skydiving Photography does it? -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Have you ever gone low unintentionally?

5 of 6 on a six-way open under 1,000' .... broke off at about 2,000'. Pre-Cypres or we may have had a couple of fires. I was in the saddle at 800'. Mass lack of altitude awareness. (Boy those runway letters look big!) We all had 800-1200 jumps. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -
Skydiving Magazine is a great little newpaper...beholden to no organization or agenda. I've subscribed for over 20 years and it is still one of the highlights of my month. 5 Stars! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I wonder how many have died at the hands of Saddam's torturers as a way to get their parents to talk? I wonder how many have died as a result of Saddam's refusal to meet the terms that would have lifted _UN_ sanctions? As Winston Churchill said, "War is horrible. But not as horrible as slavery." -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Lolie...that's because it is total blasphemy I've been a subscriber to Skydiving Magazine for over 20 years. It's a great magazine that covers everything, everywhere and isn't hamstrung by the politics of any organization or group...and that is what has been and is so refreshing. It's well worth the price of a subscription. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I don't know about silicone except from doing the caulking on my house and it is terrible stuff to remove...scrape and sand down to bare wood is what I have to do to get the surface ready to paint and re-caulk. You might have to do the same to get the surface ready to accept hot glue. The glue might not hold very well if there is a layer of silicone under where you are gluing. I hope somebody has a better solution. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I got a copy of the video and burned it onto DVD for my friend. He is going to send it to Sony marketing department. I have a Quicktime file to post but am going to wait until he hears back from Sony....the value might go down if it is all over the internet. Interesting...my first impression is that the video renders before the burning starts so it shouldn't make any difference whether you wait until the rendering has finished before telling iDVD to burn a disc...but who the heck knows with these computers! The other way to eliminate the sync problem is to export it as a "self-contained" movie in the "export to Quicktime" options. (I think this is the correct terminology - I'm at work and can't check it) This creates a QT file that you can drag into iDVD and iDVD will create the Chapters, etc that you have set up in iMovie. Very neat actually as you can export 4 different movies - say of 4 different trips - , drag them into separate folders in iDVD and you will get the Play Movie and Scene Selection options in each folder...allows for a bit more flexibility in organizing your DVD. The problem is that the file created is huge! I started to do this on an hour long video and had to kill it because I was running out of hard drive space. My guess is that an hour would create a file of about 30gb! 15gb of iMovie file, 30 gb of QT file and 5-6 gb of iDVD file and there isn't much left of a 60gb hard drive! (I really need to buy an external Firewire drive soon) I'm disappointed that Apple hasn't fixed the sync problem...it is very irritating. 3.02 seems quite a bit faster to me on my iMac G4 800, 768mb Ram. I haven't had any crashes or problems like a lot of other people have experienced. I do think they are paying attention....and hopefully will have another update soon. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I feel that there has been an explosion in the populations of crows and magpies where I live....with the result they crowd out other birds. Blow away as many as you can and give the robins and other birds a bit more of a chance. That's my opinion. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

If the camera jumper isn't entangled then the skyhook will operate normally and be of benefit? If he is entangled then he's in bad karma already, but I don't think the skyhook makes it any worse. Am I missing something here on (2)? I think if you are entangled and the Skyhook is connected...when you cutaway, your main is going to stay connected to your helmet...your reserve will possibly/probably be activated by the cutaway...the SKyhook will be connected to the reserve bridle...the reserve bridle and freebag can start deploying....and I think it has the possibility for a very bad situation to develop. I would prefer being able to cutaway, realize I was hung up, jettison my helmet, fall away and activate my reserve into clean air. In the original thread an experienced cameraflyer (Hookitt) said he had experienced the situation where his main was spun up so badly that he couldn't look up or determine whether he was entangled before cutting away. (His post is the last one in the thread. A few posts above Diablopilot outlines a good summary of camera jumping emergency procedures) It is because of reading of experiences like that that I want to be able to chop, fall and ensure no entanglement exists before pulling silver. I think that it will be interesting to see if experienced cameraflyers order the Skyhook on their new Microns. This will be a good indication of how much of a risk this is perceived to be. I think a proxy risk evaluation would be to see how many cameraflyers have RSLs installed and hooked up when jumping camera. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Thanks...I missed that in the original thread. Unless you do nothing but crw or shoot camera on every jump I see no downside to having a Skyhook installed. Being able to disconnect it if you want to makes it impossible to advise against it...IMO
-
I think it is a terrific idea that will save lives. The only two situations I can think of where a person may not want to have a Skyhook/RSL are: 1 - CRW and 2 - Camera - I think that camera-flyers need to be sure they are not entangled before cutting away. Other than that, I think it is something everybody else can use. Can the Skyhook be disconnected by disconnecting the RSL? In other words, could I connect it when doing non-camera jumps and disconnect it when jumping camera? -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Dave, Stay down south for a few more days if you can...this cold is going to last until next Wednesday...and then the forecast is for plus 12...a swing of 50 degrees celsius! We might have to fire up the old Cessna for a couple of loads if that comes to pass. hey, enjoy those high altitude dives!! Those ones _were_ a bit expensive...so I took a look at Amadeus and think that it does the trick. I used the spectrum analyzer to visually spot the frequencies that corresponded with the "hisses" and then used the "Suppress frequencies" filter. Much more acceptable audio. Thanks for listing Amadeus...Cacophony doesn't seem to be able to do the same thing with as much flexibility. Cacophony has a high pass filter ..but it makes the audio seem very muffled and there doesn't appear to be a way to tailor the filter characteristics. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
