Panasonic D-Snap - "Credit card" sized SD ram camcorder
murrays replied to cpoxon's topic in Photography and Video
Interesting little gadget but it records in Mpeg2 at 320 by 240 so the video would be 1/4 of a regular video frame. The Mpeg 2 is a problem for editing. It also looks like it uses Mpeg4...if that is the case I would suspect that it could be converted to other formats using Quicktime. Not something that would fit in with what most skydive videographers use to edit, etc. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -
Oh my god NO! The Canadian Gun Registry system is a billion dollar waste of taxpayer money. The crooks will always be able to buy guns. Registration will do nothing to keep guns out of their hands. It is a complete waste of time and money. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Wow, Otay is just a hop, skip and a jump from Doghouse Junction...I should move there..I'm always in the doghouse -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

That is the story that I heard....the arm was found out in the desert all dried out and mummified. That picture is great!!!! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

As a comedian I saw years ago said," Guys, women like sex just as much as we do. Way back when I jumped a still camera...1984-1990, I used a 16mm lens pretty much every jump and I loved it. You have to be close but I loved the thing. Here are some old shots of mine...a lot were taken with the 16mm. I used to tape it to my foot and shoot crw, fasten it to the strut on cessnas, take it along on tandem jumps to take photos of me and my passengers...and just had a ton of fun with it. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Michel had one balloon....if he is to make another attempt he will have to raise money to do it. They might be back her ein Saskatchewan next spring but there is no way to know right now. (Our club President was out at the launch site when the balloon failed, and that is all I have heard about another attempt) -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Fournier's Balloon Tears on Launch
murrays replied to murrays's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't think a new envelope is a possibility....likely depends on whether funds can be raised. It is fortunate that it failed at ground level and not at a low altitude where Michel wouldn't have been able to get out and open a parachute. If there is a silver lining to this...it is that he was uninjured. The material these balloons are made of is like Saran wrap...very thin, light...but that is what they build them from. This envelope was built by a firm in Britain that specializes in this sort of material and construction. I think they used the best firm available for the construction of the balloon envelope. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -
Fournier's Balloon Tears on Launch
murrays replied to murrays's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Unfortunately, I have just heard from the launch site that Michel Fournier's balloon envelope failed as it was launched. He was in his capsule, the balloon was fully inflated and when it was released it ripped. I don't have any more details. I am very sorry to hear this as Michel Fournier and his crew are super guys and it is a shame to see the years of work go for naught when they were so close. My deepest regrets. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -
I have a javelin with pockets in the back pad for weights. This would get them off your belly if getting a new rig is in your future. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

A suggestion .... call Al MacDonald at Flying High Manufacturing in Claresholm Alberta. 403 687-2225. Al builds the Sidewinder which is TSO'd in the US. I would guess he could have a rig ready for you in about 3 weeks. The Sidewinder is a good rig that is tough and long lasting and Al's excellent service is why our club just placed an order for a new student rig with Al. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

How so Kris? ....I agree when Apple punted Jobs and was run by Amelio that they made huge mistakes when they still had huge market share. Unfortunately for Apple, the ground they lost is very difficult to make up given the fact that Windows has become the standard. I think that the mere fact that Apple is still alive..and profitable...is a huge credit to Steve Jobs insistence on innovation and vision. What would be recent examples of what you're thinking? (I find the whole history of the PC business very interesting....Gates, Jobs, Wozniak, etc.) -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

When I switched 3 1/2 years ago, the Mac was the best alternative for what I wanted to accomplish...edit video on a machine with everything set up and ready to go. The price I paid was equivalent to what I would have paid for a Windows machine. I think Macs are much more cost-effective now than they were 12 years ago when I bought my first computer. The iMac I bought worked flawlessly from when I plugged it and my DV-Cam in and is still working fine today for a new owner since I bought a new machine a year ago. I never spent one minute loading drivers, resolving conflicts, etc. that I have spent lots of time on with my Windows machine. My time is valuable to me and the Mac didn't waste it. I appreciate not having my machine load up with spyware, virii, etc, etc and not having to constantly be on the lookout for the latest some malevolent idiot has dreamed up. The viruses on the list you pointed to are all pre-1998...none of them would run on OS X. To my knowledge, no OS X viruses exist...but I could be wrong. The small market share of Macs is a blessing as far as I am concerned....as you point out, nobody is going to write virii that do little damage....and that is just fine with me. Good customer service...Apple topped PC World's latest Service and Reliability survey. There are lots of reasons to use a Mac, they are good machines, come with a good OS and good, easy to use software. I'm very happy with my Macs...if I thought a Windows machine would serve me better I'd buy one. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

If you have Quicktime Pro ($29) you can rotate video and do a million other cool things with it. QT Pro is a great tool. It is available for Windows and Mac OS. How big is this video? I have an Optik with side-mounted PC-1 in a DBox. I love it. It seems very secure with just the chin cup. I can't see using a second strap. I have a picture of a 64-way jewel with a bipole centre on my desk from a mid-1980's USPA Calendar. I think it is over Deland. Tom Piras is one of the two corners that are facing outwards. Cool shot of a difficult formation to build and fly. I believe that a 100-way jewel has been built...possibly in Arizona in the 90's. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I've had a Phantom 145 for 17 years in what is _now_ my second rig. I have had three rides on it...one about an 8 second delay after an intentional cutaway, one a quicker pull after an intentional and the third a low speed after a crw wrap. It landed me great, the openings were fine. If it passes a good rigger's inspection, I wouldn't be afraid of buying it if you're getting a good deal....but it has to be a good deal! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

This was back in the days when the camera was the size of a large TRV style camcorder and the recording unit the size of a VCR. If I remember correctly from Skydiving's coverage of this accident, McGuire had worked a night shift and hadn't had much, if any sleep. He also boarded the plane before the other jumpers and sat with his back to the bulkhead and he was in the last group to exit. With the tandem-master preoccupied with his student, this poor guy climbed out rear float and video'd the tandem jump without realizing he was missing his rig....due to the harness he used to carry the recording unit.....and without anybody else being in position to notice his dreadful mistake. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
