Banned hookturns. Which turbine dz's have banned hookturns?
kj126 replied to CrazyL's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I'm sure you know it exsist, but on the DZ locator it will have if they allow hook turns at there DZ. But it always a good idea to ask any way just before doing so. Like our DZ does allow them but we have seperate locations for swooping and normal approaches. There have been way to many canopy collisions and its just a good idea to ask. oops is way to late. Shouldn't dating also be considered an EXTREME sport. With all the unexpected items one could go through and endure. Just a thought. I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!

One thing that I have found very benificial, is to have the TI tell you what he's doing and why and even have you steer and tell you why, This gives you a real good idea of how to work with the wind conditions and be able to set up for a good downwind, base, and final approach. I'm sure your wanting to ditch the guy on your back, but the things that worry you take over and do not let you concentrate on everything else. Try and put it to rest before hand. Just my oppinion. 2 Simple ways to check the altenator, If it is creating a charge it has a magnetic pull at the back and center of the altenator, (do get your hand caught while doing this) you can use a screw driver to see if it has the pull force. 2nd is just disconnect the negative battery terminal, cars need some type of charge to fire the spark plugs, if the altenator is bad the car will die. Keith you know and I know, your a big boy, So get something you can live with, key word (live). A sabre 2 would be a good canopy, the are completely rectangle, and have less tendency to spin up violently. but Crossfires and safires open great with good flare. And to tell you the truth, you know I jump a JVX 87 and a Velo, but that Spectre is an awesome canopy. Scotty has a 190 and I'm sure would be more than willing to let you give it a jump or 3. Swoop pants are not for everyone, I wear them for comps, just to keep the calfs from getting torn up. But these things highlight my chicken legs. We need an alternative to the style!! I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!

I have chopped the Icarus 365 and also 2 other instructors from my DZ for the same issue, with a set 400 all you really have to do is sit and wait. But the Icarus will not untwist without some serious help. It has gotten to the point where only 2 of the 8 Ti's, me being one of them will even jump those canopies, for other reasons as well, the stall point of the flare comes quick and if its not just right you get a sudden drop. I don't want to bash the canopies to bad, but they are definately one you have to relearn a few tricks on. I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!

Why is it that USPA has the distance record still held by Tagle in 05 @ 150.54 meters. That has been blown away right? Or was Jays just not official. I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!

I want to say thanks to all for a very cool first swoop comp (beer). I didn't do as well as I wanted but it was a great learning experience and gave me the basics on what to work on for upcoming events. Also great job on putting it all together guys and gals. It did not seem to be so much a competition rather a gathering of ppl who enjoy the fun of swooping, and the best was everyone walked away with only thier pride stung a bit, including mine. J Higg. Do you charge additional for someone to watch?
kj126 replied to fpritchett64's topic in Gear and Rigging
Extra charges: $20- if you watch $30- if you ask questions $40- if you help $50- if already attempted by owner. saying I would have done it this way, will just get you smacked. ba ha I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!! -
I think its the splivit module located on the gainly sprocket that gives out, letting the conutter valve stress out and break. HA cleared that up. I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!

This is something I bring up quit often to 100 + jumpers, and some with lower #'s. You should be able to land with rears. Scenario- I land on rears often due to swooping but when I had to because of a break fire that wrapped through the lines, there was not much thought about how to fly the canopy. My whole point being, (practice) and if it's never needed then good for you, but if it is then we will watch you walk away. I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!

I'm on my 90 velo now loaded @ 2.6 and it does not get the distance as the 96 loaded @ 2.4. I also would like to fly the JVX but damn you throw some dollars at those canopies. I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!

So the easiest way for you to be in control is to have your student in control. Now I'm not sure of your ground prep, but it should include the student actually going through the arch motions, if you simply tell them(it will not work), they just jumped from a plane and forgot it, Just as we teach, muscle memory is the key. Have them go through the arch until they get it. Side connections: There are a set on the rig and the student harness, make sure they are snug, if either are loose they will flip and flop under you until pull time, and it's just a constant battle. Everything up until jump time and including under canopy can be discussed, its the free fall when you need them to respond without speaking, I use 3 methods for legs: teaching them the AFF signal for legs up(usually not alot of repsonse) , next is the thigh tap, telling them if they feel me hitting them in the thigh to get the legs between and on the butt, and lastly is just taking over and hooking them with yours. Arms are not so difficult unless you make it, if the students arms are extended and turning you, normally people will go for the wrist to pull them back, your fighting all their strength, Place yours at the students elbows like your trying to place them under arrest, you have alot more leverage. Hope this will help a little and I'm sure some others have found others techniques that can give you a helping hand, and by the way it will get worse before it gets better., HA--- enjoy. So give us a bit more on what your looking for. Are you speaking of how to better control the students. Or just general items? I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!

Just wondering when the stupidity ends: So about jump 250 under a sabre 170, tried a 180 hook, seperated my ribs. Tried another hook into an of DZ landing on a windy day and just got my feet over the power lines.(pucker factor really high) Pulled a down wind landing with winds @ 12knts on a velo 96, broke my tail bone when I hit a small hump in the dirt. I think I'll stop thier, before I look really stupid. I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!

Practicing swooping during regualr full altitude loads
kj126 replied to bbl's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Their is a huge difference between 90 to 270 I agree, but for the most part I don't like the 180. Reason: When starting out most will induce a 90 turn and while getting better they will start to snap that turn to get deeper in and create a longer recovery arc by getting parrallel with the canopy, If you do this with a 180 and start snapping that turn you go from looking forward to looking at the ground immediately. And thats what you have to deal with. yes I bounced and seperated my ribs by doing so, so that might make me a bit bias. Other wise on a 270 you have the opportunity to see your ground approach and determine whether to go deeper in the front risers or let it plain out for a sec. Just soley my oppinion which doesn't mean anything.Just do everything higher noticing your altitude loss while doing each turn sequence and when you get consistent (only then) start bringing it down. Disadvantages or Advantages to being small??
kj126 replied to Toastie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The only disadvantage is through the AFF, usually DZ will carry a varity of gear and jump suits but nothing that really suits your stature. But once you get through the trials and tribulations of AFF their is a wide variety of gear choices that can get you up to speed with all others. I am an instructor and have jump with everyone, 6'3' 295lbs down to 5'2 a buck "0" five. Our job is to teach you safety in the sky, not to make it difficult on you just because it's difficult for us. Think about this one, Do you think the VISO can detect the arm motion or your intentions to pull at a certain alitude or the sudden change in decent rate from the parachute being over your head. I Am Sofa King We Todd Did!!
