  1. Quite right - quickly is the key. If an actual emergency happens, it won't be possible to delay at all getting set at the door, because someone will be shoving you out of the way! Newbies should be reminded that they should move so fast toward and out the door that it would be like they were a late diver on a formation load. Quite different than even thinking that the slightest hesitation would be allowed. Is it taught in such a way that they have to approach and leave the door in such an immediate/emergency fast motion? 2. That is why large formation RW jumpers are most wise...they get the best spot. How is the command to open the door usually done? Is there a separate light for that, or is word from the pilot passed on to those at the back? It would seem that a significant amount of time is warranted given that it might take a bit of fiddling to get the latches to open and then lock again. 3. It is interesting to hear of such instances, but of course many things can wear out a canopy. The thread I linked earlier had some anecdotal evidence to say that ZPX durability was good, and some that it was bad. I would like to believe that Aerodyne put sufficient jumps on test canopies to confirm the suitability of the material (along with testing that the material mfg would have done). Also, It seems that some (not saying your rigger is one of them) have a poor opinion of the material, and spread that opinion, based solely on rumor. 4. I have over 100 jumps on my Pilot 210 ZPX and all is great with it so far. Aerodyne has shown test data that its tensile strength is the same as regular ZP, tear strength is better than regular ZP, and its strength after abuse is better. They recently withdrew the option for ZPX on the sensei canopy. Bill Legard, president of Aerodyne, contacted me to discuss this at length following a previous thread: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3869869;search_string=zpx;#3869869 Bill was very forthcoming about the new material. I expect that anyone that wanted to contact him would have no trouble getting their questions answered. It would be best if he would post in threads such as this, for the benefit of so many potential customers. Bill said the ZPX material is more elastic, especially in the 'bias' direction, and that was the reason for it being withdrawn from the sensei. Some people were having issues with their canopy at high loadings not performing as expected. Bill also said that he continues to jump his ZPX sensei at an extremely high wingload and he does not see a performance problem (he had a lot of jumps on it but I can't remember how many). As far as long term durability issues, as I said in the earlier thread: People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 6. Losing the turbocharger just means the engine can't make as much power as normal, but it is not an emergency. 7. Public broadcasting still has commercials. They are not the same type as you'll find on conventional stations, but they are still commercials. I don't mind them asking for money, but I do mind them getting it from taxes. I'd rather they air more of their commercials and beg more. 8. not true. I have travelled Lufthansa, British, Swiss, Easyjet, Iberia with my rig as handluggage. No problem. Maybe there is a difference. In the US the authorities specifically acknowledge that AADs are not to be considered a hazard. If there is not such official position/guidance from European authorities, then airlines can choose to do what they want and worry about AADs and such with their position changing for every flight/airport/airline/day. Even in the US, I've had TSA lie about the policy being revised, but at least there is a fair chance of them following the policy - there is something to guide them countrywide. 9. I've seen it posted as a rule on a big sign in the plane, but still often enough not complied with. I've seen it at various DZs. As you suggest, definitely worth bringing up with the staff, as an item for safety day, etc. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 10. I find that belt usage is applied well, but still plenty of helmets with substantial cameras held by hand during takeoff. It would be nice to see the same push to comply in this area. 11. After cutting away, before the reserve opened, I did think about how much of a pain in the ass it will be to fit my rig back into the gear bag for the flight home. When I had one of my R3 (modified capewell type) releases get activated during a zoo exit, I did wait until I got down lower before opening the reserve. Getting blown away in the desert under a round reserve greatly increases your chances of hitting a nasty bit of desert foliage. 12. ok...so this does align with the perception I was getting re might have to flare earlier for no wind landing no? Or is it best to forget about this even if it is the case, flare at the same height each time for consistency, and if you happen to have a higher wind day and don't need as much toggle input, then there's no real negative? Your canopy does not know how far off the ground it is, or how fast the wind is blowing, or in what direction. Your canopy doesn't care in terms of the airspeed over the wing, but if you have a low WL and do a no wind type of flare on a high wind day, your feet will care because of having to run backwards as you land. If you have little or no ground speed on your final approach, then all that needs to happen is to get rid of vertical speed during the flare. That calls for a different technique. 13. Because it does not take so much of a flare to plane-out the canopy (no vertical speed), the flare can be done later, and not as deep. Finishing the flare after the plane out is what reduces the horiz speed, and that takes longer than just getting to no vertical speed. 14. Many new jumpers flare as hard and fast as they can all in one motion. They don't realize that you get best results by letting the canopy plane-out with a partial flare (the amount of brakes that requires will vary), let it fly like that for just a tiny bit, then continuing the level flight by slowly applying more brakes which will slow your forward speed. Anyway, that is my description, others will put it differently. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 15. You're getting a new canopy, so why not choose a 9 cell model with lower pack volume for the same wing area, such as Pulse or Pilot ZPX? Some 7 cell models will also pack smaller, but I understand that you may prefer a 9. 17. Exactly, because nobody knows how to 'just fly'. It is a skill that can't be had just by watching others do it. Just as the simple skill of riding a bicycle cannot be obtained by watching others, your brain has to be trained to do something new. A lot of people don't realize that when turning left on a bicycle, you first turn the front wheel to the right, which causes you to lean to the left, and then you bring the wheel back to the left. To come out of the turn, you turn more left to bring you out of being leaned over. People learn how to ride a bike without this knowledge, but it takes a bunch of practice and failures. Even with the knowledge of how you at first steer the opposite of how you want to go, it still is not possible for your brain to do it without repeated training, but before too long, you can ride no-hands and eat at the same time it becomes so easy. 18. For the shorter harnesses, it is nice to have a metal handle option that doesn't take up so much length - that harness real estate is in short supply for the short rigs and/or can lead to limitations on where the chest strap can be placed. 19. No, the pic I posted is of my rig, showing the std and low profile handle. I don't see much benefit the the triangular-style (your pic) options that stick out just as far as the std handle. I wanted the projection from the harness to be less, and Kelly suggested what I posted. I think a lot of people would choose it if it were known to be available. 21. With that many options, it would be helpful for pics to be available on their website, but I couldn't find mention of any metal reserve handle option. I think the handle I have is the same as that available for a long time on such rigs as the racer. 22. How does the Wings low profile handle compare to the one in the attached pic (shown with regular D handle also)? I've used the handle shown and it is very easy to find and pull. Is the Wings low profile handle a reduced height handle (in the direction of the main lift web)? 24. What do y'all think of what I think were 3 looks at the alti after the wave-off? Each look took a good amount of time. The subject of looking at your alti during a mal was discussed in a previous thread. Many agreed that during a high speed mal there isn't much purpose, as you should already be aware of what needs to be done and should be doing it instead of confirming altitude. Of course you ultimately did what was needed, and it is very tempting to confirm if you've got time to keep trying to get the main out.
