Have a Speed reserve, but no links... what to use?
sundevil777 replied to degeneration's topic in Gear and Rigging
True! However, as you know the links are part of the canopy and it's the TSO's holder decision what may or may not be used. I thought we have been here before, and that in the US, riggers are allowed to use "compatible components" and all that...they are licensed to make such decisions. Using a TSOd link fits clearly into that category, right? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Have a Speed reserve, but no links... what to use?
sundevil777 replied to degeneration's topic in Gear and Rigging
Why is that? It is probably not the reason that piifish had in mind, but I believe that some reserves have lines with not enough room in the "eyelet" for PD reserve slinks, but reserve links from another mfg will fit. Of course I could be wrong. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Don't Bounce a Newbie, I almost did...
sundevil777 replied to Vertifly's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
OK, I'll go with a very selfish perspective, and say that a 'collateral damage' that matters to me is that when severe injury happens, it often stops jumping for a long time and many people go home for the day. I don't get to jump all day every day of every weekend, and I don't like to have my fun ruined by such incidents. A typical sprained ankle by a student is nothing compared to the interruption that a high speed swoop gone bad will cause. There, you've got an impact to me that is very important, to me. Nikon D5100 vs Canon T3i for son's college classes
sundevil777 replied to sundevil777's topic in Photography and Video
He is in a visual communication program (won't be used for jumping), and will be taking photo and video courses this year. 2 obvious choices are a Nikon D5100 or Canon T3i that will satisfy both photo and video requirements. Specs: DSLR photo camera with hot shoe Must have manual focus, shutter speed and aperture control Must have manual white balance control Mic input availability (Mini-Stereo or XLR) Questions: 1) It seems that you have to get an expensive video camera that meets all of those requirements, but I'd like your opinion if you agree or not. This is related to whether it is better to get a separate photo and video camera. His instructors have made it clear that either of the cameras mentioned would be good. 2) Does either camera have a better reputation for reliability/durability? 3) Any other contributions or considerations I haven't thought of would be welcome. Thanks! People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I wouldn't expect that Aerodyne makes it. I would expect that they worked with a supplier to develop a specification together and an agreement to exclusively supply it for some time. I don't think the other mfgs make their own fabric either. The canopy mfgs may have their own specification rather than some general industry spec, but that is likely the extent of what they make in terms of fabric. Don't confuse toughness with the ability to prevent injury to the head. A good quality motorcycle helmet (they ARE designed to protect the head, with very well designed tests to confirm that ability), I think would be destroyed by a strong hammer blow, but the structure is designed to do that. The skydiving helmets are definitely not so well designed to absorb impact, but may do a better job of it than you might think based upon their destruction from a hard impact. Being towed up, thinking that the chest strap will break if he gets into a lock up situation. It seems like it would be much safer to launch from a slope, but of course not so convenient if a suitable hill is not available. Pennsylvania Admits There’s No In-Person Voter Fraud
sundevil777 replied to ChangoLanzao's topic in Speakers Corner
What about Al Franken's election? Over 1000 felons voted in that election - against the law. What about 2012 report by the S. Carolina dept of motor vehicles report that found 953 dead people had voted. They also reported that 4965 people had voted in S. Carolina after their S. Carolina driver's license had been cancelled due to their getting an ID in another state. Voter fraud, no problem here folks, keep moving along, nothing to see here... Pennsylvania Admits There’s No In-Person Voter Fraud
sundevil777 replied to ChangoLanzao's topic in Speakers Corner
There is a lot of evidence of absentee fraud, such as the mayoral election in Miami that was invalidated by a court because of the more than 5000 fraudulent absentee votes. So, can we agree that something should be done to prevent absentee fraud. Perhaps the voter ID laws in some states do help with the absentee problem, they might have made some (or at least should) revision to the process. I don't know what that change to prevent fraud might be, but we should agree that it is a big problem. The Florida dept of elections in an official report said it is the "tool of choice for those inclined to commit voter fraud. Intentional deception. It is reasonable to conclude that you wanted others to think that what you had experienced should apply to others - that ID should not be required when the typical person goes in to apply. You knew very well that is not the case. I never said you'd need an ID every month. The fed gov't considers a SS card to be a form of ID, used to comply with the laws for employers and other situations. Those against ID laws say the small number of voter fraud that have been found by some particular study means that none exists, nothing to see here - keep moving along folks. I think that if some study was able to find a small number, that there is likely a lot more. Voting fraud is easy to do and hard to catch. and when do you think that law was implemented? With a 94 year old lady, SS and MC and banking accounts were taken care of decades ago. What is true now often wasn't necessary then. Or perhaps she had the requisite form of ID then, but hasn't bothered renewing her driver's license since 1985. Will Voter ID laws permit a form of identification that expired 20 years ago? or even last year? Advocating that proposed voter ID laws be revised to be less of a burden as you describe is reasonable. To advocate that there should be no ID requirement is not reasonable, IMO. I do remember that some states were going to devote a lot of resources to assisting people to get the ID if needed (something along those lines). That is a very possible reason for the high cost of such laws - I wonder. Liberals think government spending is an economic stimulus, so why shouldn't they be all in favor of spending whatever it takes to help people get the ID required? Then why did you say "ID was never requested?" I was ready to accept that you had forgotten. The fact you did not admit it might lead a person to think that you want to obscure the facts. There is a substantial, and very ordinary burden on citizens to have ID, including having a job as you admit. To assert that the proposed ID burden for voting is too great is not reasonable. I could understand if you argued that a birth certificate and SS card should be enough (non-picture ID), that might be a reasonable position against a picture ID requirement. Even though picture ID is not required for SS benefits, the burden is substantial, including military service records and tax forms. Do you think Ally bank requires ID as a policy they initiated? Perhaps you didn't bother to read that part of the Ally bank statement that says, "Federal law requires us to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person that opens an account." You may have bankers that don't follow the law, but to imply that a typical seasoned citizen should expect that is wrong. As you know, they are required to have direct deposit. Why would people go to so much trouble to get fraudulent voter registrations if it was not with the intent to commit voting fraud? If conservatives are found to be collecting fraudulent registrations, I would assume it if for the purpose of voting fraud. Why should I think differently of any group that would do it? Voting fraud is unfortunately too easy to do, and difficult to catch, which is why it is so easy to conclude that it isn't happening. I think the "solution to a problem that doesn't exist" argument is not going to be enough, and we've been over the supposed "ID is too much of a burden" contention. Liberals should think of a better argument. It doesn't matter that I think it doesn't work, what should matter for liberals is that it won't convince the general (voting ) public. If there was reason to believe that voting fraud was happening to the overall detriment of liberals, then I am confident that they would be very eager to spend the money needed and inconvenience the voters to prevent it. >Yup, I personally accompanied people to social security appointments to apply for benefits. ID was never requested. You are wrong about what it takes to get Social Security benefits. According to the SS dept you don't need a photo ID, but you do need quite a load of documents (see quote below). Perhaps you don't have a very good memory of when you personally accompanied people to apply for benefits. They do say that you can start the application without the documents, so maybe you just forgot that the person you accompanied had so much homework to do: You need to have: They do say that they will provide help to get the documents. That is nice of them to help out the elderly like that. I wonder if some of the predicted cost of voter ID laws might also be devoted to helping people get their documents so they can get the ID needed to vote. I remember that some of the states claimed that they were going to provide such help, which would be very costly to do. From a quick look at the Medicare site info, it seems that the Medicare application relies on the SS process in terms of identification, which makes sense. The local banks I've used have asked for driver's license and SS card. Ally bank (which is a major online only bank, also require identification that is assumed to be SSN, but may include driver's license: It sure is a big burden that our government imposes upon the seasoned citizens. Voter ID law requirements seem reasonable in comparison. The last jobs I got required (due to federal regulations) that I provide 2 forms of ID that had to come from different categories. I believe a combination of SS card and birth certificate was enough, other options were possible. Picture ID was not needed, but just having a job required at least 2 forms of government issued ID. It sure is a big burden that our government imposes upon people that get hired for a job. Voter ID law requirements seem reasonable in comparison. How do you stop massacres by mentally unstable people?

Five years ago, you're saying a person could get SS benefits without ID? I have trouble accepting that claim, do you have anything to back it up? Isn't ID required to get the Medicare card? ID might even be required by doctors, it wouldn't surprise me that a Medicare or other insurance card isn't enough. Of course, but the obvious point is that ID is required to have established that already established bank account People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. the problem, stated repeatedly, lies in the citizens who don't get to vote, and the millions of dollars spent in these schemes for a non existent problem. Not really in character with the GOP philosophy. Only in acknowledging the unequal result does it make any sense for them to pursue it. In the old lady scenario, she needs ID to get her Social Security check every month. They now are making the elderly have it direct deposited, another ID requirement. Can she get her medicare benefit without having to have had a gov't issued ID? I think not, perhaps you can prove me wrong. In the less old scenario, you need ID in order for employers to verify right to work, at least I've needed 2 different types of ID for that, one showing my Social Security number. What if you're not working? Is it possible to get unemployment benefits or other assistance without ID? I don't think so, but perhaps you'll correct the story on this also. As far as having to spend millions...very regrettable that it might cost so much to do something that is so ordinary and reasonable as compared to so many other functions of government, and laws imposed by gov't. Also, why is the spending of money suddenly of such concern to liberals? I've heard from the liberal leadership in Congress that spending by government is an effective method of economic stimulus, so it should be considered as contributing to the recovery, right? Joe Biden was going to examine every little bit of spending going on in government to stop waste, are the costs required to implement voter ID laws really worth his keen interest? No voter fraud, right! Liberals will have to spend a lot of money to sell that. Now you're implying that if a person lands far enough away, then doing things such as following others into 15 mph downwind landings isn't expected. Is that what you mean? That's your solution? Will someone else you know be willing to post on this thread to let us know what happened when you can't? Didn't I raise this at the very start of this thread.. Oh, wait, yes I did... Quite right! I had heard of how towing can result in being slammed to the ground, and accepted as fact that it was a bad idea, but didn't understand it so well and had never seen it. After reading about it and seeing the youtube videos posted a few posts ago, of course it is easy to conclude that to rely on the chest strap breaking to prevent a lockout is not a good plan. Anyway, if the OP is going to take such a risk, and it goes bad, having the result posted here might prevent others from a repeat.
