It would make sense for it to be part of the "changeable mode" cypres. Any model can be converted to this type with the only cost being shipping and time. Maybe it is not required anymore, but tandem instructors in-training were required to do a first jump solo using a tandem rig. If the war had dragged on much longer, the Soviets would likely have "helped" conquer the Japanese. That would have meant at least some if not much of Japan winding up like East Germany. It is a good thing that the USSR was not able to "help". People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I hope this was a joke. Perhaps the "pack it yourself" was not expected. I believe that anyone can pack their own reserve under the supervision of a licensed rigger. If the rigger sees what is done, then it is just as if they did it, and the rigger puts their seal to it. AFF student: having huge problem with kicking.
sundevil777 replied to jjoll's topic in Safety and Training
You might try doing some moves that require leg input. Tracking is one, you legs need to be all the way out, then transitioning out of that slowly. You might try intentionally backsliding by putting your feet on your butt for a while. Try extending just one leg at a time to see how that feels and what it does. Also, I suggest trying to use the lower leg (from knee to foot) as a kind of rudder. If you try rotating just your right lower leg inward, that will cause you to turn left. Then doing the same with your left lower leg will make a right turn. It is a powerful way to turn, especially with a jumpsuit that has booties (I understand you don't). Devoting some freefall time to moves that are leg-focused is worth doing. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. It seems they could have just rigged some way to know whether a signal had been received (intentional or not) to arm the system, and then provide some way to disconnect the solenoids. As they explained, it took a long time for the overheating to occur, plenty enough to break the circuit, even to reconnect just before jumping out. They wouldn't really have to redesign it, just make it possible to tinker with it a bit. Is it possible to use units of (thousands of) feet How many digits does it display during freefall? The user manual is very brief, doesn't address these questions. Will you send you Cypres in for a 4/8 year check
sundevil777 replied to bodypilot90's topic in Gear and Rigging
It is reasonable to think that some or many of the failures that occur during the 4/8 year check ought to be related to things that aren't possible to be tested during the power on self test. My memory is they test at extremes of temp (and vibration?). Those extremes subject electronics to conditions where less than perfect solder joints, etc. are uncovered. Such extremes aren't really a part of a normal skydive. Even if you jump in the winter or summer, your rig would take a long time exposed to the extreme condition before the inside of the cypres would get close to that temp. Testing at those extremes is valuable because it uncovers less than perfect connections and gets components that would die an early death (infant mortality) to die during testing instead of with the customer. Someone mentioned that a Vigil can tell you what pressure it is measuring on the ground and that it is useful to compare it to the actual barometric pressure you can get from weather sources. I think this measurement is mostly meaningless because it is only change in pressure that matters. However, if you know your AAD is a certain amount off of actual at a certain time, and then months later it shows a drift away from that offset, that could be useful as an indication something might be wrong with the sensor, but even that could be expected of these types of sensors. When you talk about wanting to sink it in, I hope you mean allowing it to go back to full glide with enough altitude so you don't get slammed into the ground. The altitude that the surge back to full glide takes can be surprising and will hurt if you get it wrong. That kind of landing is often done by some tandem instructors to get a little bit of extra speed. When going back to full glide, the speed at which the toggles are raised is also critical to how the canopy will or won't excessively surge. Done poorly, you get hurt. Done well, and if you anticipate how much more forward glide you'll get, it can help with accuracy if you're going to overshoot otherwise. Also, there is a risk of conflict with other canopies around/behind/above you, as they may not expect this, so there are plenty of things to consider. There may come a day when an off landing forces you to land in such a small area that you can't do a full glide landing. Being able to sink a canopy in a way somewhat similar to real accuracy competitors can be a valuable capability/skill (landing in relatively deep brakes with little or no final flare). Such a landing done on a largish sport canopy would of course mean a vertical speed greater than that with a proper accuracy canopy - meaning you better be prepared to PLF. I choose to jump a canopy big enough that I feel comfortable with it. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. My First Cutaway: Jump 14
sundevil777 replied to Frenchjumper's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You should also realize that you could have stopped the turn by using the other toggle - the side that operated normally. That does not mean that it would have been wise to land your main, but it could have given you time under a "normally" flying canopy to assess the situation. Options on how you might land under such conditions are better left for a long discussion with instructors/others in person, and I would expect them to tell a person with 14 jumps that cutting away would be the right thing to do without delay. Still, I think you ought to realize the turn could be stopped. Good job in not letting it kill you. You might consider putting some colored electrical or duct tape on it. You can candystripe it if you want! It won't look as clean as a dip or powder coat, but easy and cheap. Strong Wrap Single Point release risers wanted.

Making an old single riser/side rig into 2 risers/side is discussed below, I like the way I had done to my old rig: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1299917#1299917 I expect you're aware of such alternatives, I just thought I'd throw it out there. There may be some center of gravity benefit for putting the gear down, but I would also think that extra drag located low like that would cause a bit of a rotational moment lifting the tail. What is the cost of having them, other than the monetary cost when ordering a new rig? The only cost is the upfront cost, unless they are a part of some service bulletin . I just haven't been convinced of their supposed benefits. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. So many years ago, it was not so hard. None have been produced for about 30 years. Don't you think they would need to test this fix before approving it? Where would they get the rings from? Not just the riser attachment rings, but also the hip articulation rings are affected. The large size rings may not be suitable there. As others have said, perhaps they aren't actually so far "out of production" as would be assumed - 2007 was mentioned. I am guilty of not appreciating that so many also have hip rings, as I don't have them. I'm not such a fan of the cost/benefit of hip rings except for the advantage they give for replacement of leg straps. However, I believe it is a much easier job to replace hip rings than the main riser rings and therefore could get done at many well equipped lofts with master riggers. Anyway, we don't know what the replacement time for the Vortex factory to do the fix (new container) is now or what it will be in a couple weeks. I'm just thinking that the downtime will be significant and that alternative ways to get un-grounded at least temporarily are worth discussing People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I think the good folks at Vortex should have specifically allowed for the use of the separable links as was done so long ago. Perhaps master riggers in the US and equivalents in other countries are able to do this on their own? Not many, but I know where to find 3 sets of the RW-6, large, separable 3-rings Derek V They might be much more valuable than before! Seriously, even if just a very small number of rigs are affected, It is easy to see that using those separable rings could be attractive to someone not wanting to be grounded at the moment, and to allow the mfg time to spread out the proper replacement of bad rings. Not pretty, especially for those silly people with mini 3 rings , but who would want their rig to be grounded for a long time? Some customers might reasonably prefer to go with the old replaceable large ring for now. I wonder if they could be made again, or how many of them are out there, somewhere, to be used.
