  1. If you're having trouble standing up 190 & 210 sized canopies, I wonder how you were doing with the smaller Pilot 7? People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  2. I had no idea the Viso did it too. That sucks. Worth reading this: http://www.aon2.co.uk/the_fine_print. I'm increasingly thinking this might be my next purchase... The Viso does a playback of the jump, but does not "download" the data in the sense that download is usually meant. The Viso engineers were especially stupid in how it has 3 digits in freefall (ex: 5.94) which of course is stupid as the 10s place value is a distraction as it changes constantly. All of the Neptune altis would display just 5.9 People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 3. Many get a unit that records detailed data for download thinking they’ll use the data, but it is only interesting at first, then stop paying any attention to it. Just consider that possibility if price matters. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 4. Quite right, and people are focusing their attention on someone far below, instead of those around them. That is a bad idea. 5. At that price, I'd prefer the neptune for what I think is a more readable display. For 1/4 the price you could find a used Neptune II and armored case. There is something about the Viso/Ares that just isn't as quickly readable to me. 7. This is an example of where the psycho method is better because it doesn't matter if the canopy is new, or what the surface on which you're packing is. 8. Just my opinion but I've never found that teaching new jumpers a unique way of packing solves the problem if their issue is experience and not technique. Someone with a B-License probably has as many pack jobs under their belt as they do jumps and that's a quantity of packs that I've done in a three day weekend. I suggested taking a look at the psycho pack because it helped me greatly. It wasn't until I'd been jumping for 30 years that I got my first zero porosity canopy. I had an awful time packing it, and the psycho pack solved the problem very easily without a downside. Getting it in the bag is no problem, and I also think it reduces the pack volume. 9. The stack pack was also called factory pack, if I remember correctly. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
  10. Try doing some research on youtube of the "psycho pack" method. It is best to put an extension of about a foot long on the bridle attachment to the canopy if you psycho pack. Precision parachutes used to recommend this method, even for their tiny swooping canopies, but it seems their website is down. You can also get the opinion of many on this site by searching "psycho pack", but realize some people confused the really old style roll or flat packing with psycho packing. Psycho packing is all about making it incredibly easy to get it in the bag. 12. Last time I was in Canada, the pizza shops described the size using inches, and if you were shopping for a TV, its size was in inches. Even the Canadians love using the classic units. What I think is really weird is that in Canada, fuel mileage isn't just switched from miles/gallon to km/L, it is inverted to be L/100km. Why did they decide to invert it? As others have mentioned, if time isn't going to be in a base 10, then why make other units comply? 13. I think it is funny that freeflyers in effect admit they are not able to avoid grabbing handles. Reminds me of "combat rules" RW jumps where grips would be taken no matter what. Good thing I don't do that FF stuff, I don't want to jump with people that are that grabby! That is really unusual. I have a loop cutaway and low profile D handle reserve that only sticks out from the harness half as much as a standard D. 14. Agreed, definitely not a Porter. Also, I would like to believe that a pilot would not intentionally spin at that time. Did anyone else (besides the other jumper) notice the floating reserve handle at about 3:20? 15. I would say kinetic energy is the only important factor. Those are the forces on the body at impact with the ground. Specifically, I'm referring to unconscious, no input landings (with brakes stowed). There's a lot of factors involved in those forces, how much and how they're spread out (hitting the ground versus hitting the sider of a building, for example) but it starts with the forward speed (horizontal and vertical component) of the reserve in question. Kinetic energy is NOT the only important factor. Hitting at a shallow angle is of course very different than straight down. Both scenarios could be at the same speed, so same kinetic energy. 16. Not helpful to repost. Kinetic energy is still not all that is important. Better to just keep it in one thread and adjust the discussion. 17. I would think that rate of descent would matter more than forward speed in an unconscious scenario, therefore total speed doesn't tell you all of what you are seeking. Also, speed with the brakes stowed is what matters for your scenario, and what you've heard may not have that in mind. I would not trust at all what you've heard, unless it came from people that are involved with the mfg. It is quite easy to find people that think they know everything. They are really irritating to those of us that do. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 18. 1 particular Dropzone that uses BurbleMe, manifesting with it, provides jumpers with the ability to see who is "checked in", who is on what loads and how far out they're scheduled, and can even get on a load while away from the DZ. 19. Argh, can't find it at the moment. Somewhere buried in all the cascading list of comments in the original fb post by B. Batignani, there was a link to a photo, I think. But a vimeo link (https://vimeo.com/190054711) was also posted for the jump video and I was able to spot it for just a moment - see attached.found it. See attached I have long been an advocate for reserve pins that are not so wimpy. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1085221#1085221 People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 20. Very interesting. Do you think that a person, with 1500 jumps spread out over almost 4 decades that then decides to learn some basic competency in sit/hd/stand by doing jumps (how many it would take, I don't know, but assume 100 just for a starting point in the discussion) would get to that level of competency faster (less total air time, I know the cost would be different) than the same skydiver that has never tried anything but belly and goes to the tunnel to learn sit/hd/stand? 21. A used neptune II. They are cheap compared to the new designs. I don't see any compelling feature of the new designs that makes them worth so much. Mine still works great, perhaps the still available "armor" case has helped it last so long, along with not bothering to change anything for different jumps (less pushing on the buttons) and treating it gently. 22. The time that is being suggested is remarkable, if one considers how many jumps that would equate to. Am I wrong to be surprised that it would take so many jumps? I would have thought that tunnel time would be more efficient in terms of the skill acquired per time spent flying, so it should take even more than the equivalent amount of time jumping, or what is wrong with my thinking? 23. Since the 12500 lb limit is such a step up in cost, I was wondering if there has ever been an effort, by anyone or an organization/business, to get some sort of exemption from that/stretching the limit? Perhaps it is correct to figure that the bureaucratic wheels just wouldn't allow it? 24. That was my first thought, 6000lbs cargo capacity is hard to do under 12,500. It sounds more like an ATR replacement. The 400 series Otter has a MTOW of 12,500 and an empty weight of 6881, for a capacity of 5619. Even the 50 year old 100 series Otter has a 5,716 capacity. I bet that with advances in materials over the last five decades, they can get a 6000 lb capacity in a 12,500 lb plane. Seems worth it to save on an extra pilot. https://www.vikingair.com/twin-otter-information/technical-description A full fuel load weighs almost 2600 lb. The payload for a 100 nm range is 4061 lb. We should be glad that planes to replace the caravan are in the works. With more available on the market, it should drive down costs for a DZ. Is there a thread about wishing that 20 years ago there were a bunch of single engine turboprop, high wing, tailgate aircraft that could take 12-16 people at a time.
