  1. I have a '96 Odyssey. I think it is great - normal car type doors, ability to sleep in it with the middle seats out, but not too big. Tents suck compared to being able to sleep comfortably in your vehicle, especially in bad weather. You can find another 1st generation Odyssey ('95-'98) with around 100k miles for about $4-6k. I bought mine a year ago, so I'm sure that they are also around in your area for that much. The later generation Odysseys are great, but more expensive, larger, and still carry the soccer mom image. Personally, I think sliding doors are more trouble than they are worth. I don't let the minivan image get in the way of utility - my ego can take the hit. Other Honda options that allow sleeping in it include the Element (4 seater) and the Pilot (8 seater). The seats don't even need to be taken out to sleep in either. The Acura MDX is another option, although more expensive. The Honda CRV is great, but not big enough to sleep in, and the seats don't fold flat like the Element and Pilot, or remove easily like the van. 2. This is more like it, the pic is worth a repost:
  3. The complete opposite of what Six Feet Under did with their last episode. That left nothing in doubt. That series finale left me completely overwhelmed, seriously emotional. The Sopranos ending was very interesting, not very satisfying, but interesting. 4. It doesn't matter if nearly everyone is clueless, it only takes one person to cause a problem for you. Such problems have the potential to get the TSA to revoke their policy allowing rigs as carry on baggage. If skydivers are seen as causing them grief becuase there are some incidents of nervous passengers, I think they would have no hesitation to reverse their position. I cannot understand why it is so important for some to have it exposed. Also, remember that despite the current policy, they can decide to not allow it anyway, then you'll have the choice of taking a later flight - hoping they'll treat you differently, or checking it without a gear bag. 5. How are you checking your gear before each jump if you didn't know this already? I apologize if it sounds rude or mean, but you really should have known this already. Know thy gear, it will help you to survive. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 6. That's a generic problem with assessment processes. In accredited US engineering schools we are now judged (in part) on our ability to produce graduates who meet our stated objectives. If our stated objective is "to produce mediocre graduate engineers", and we do that, we are considered successful in meeting that criterion! Quite right. Also, the automotive IQS measures the INITIAL customer satisfaction only. They take cars sold over a very small window of time, and survey the customers 3 months after their purchase. There is absolutely no measure of long term customer satisfaction. The customers are able to complain about things such as poor gas mileage, it doesn't matter at all if the actual result is better than the mfg claims, or if their poor mileage is because they like having fun with the performance of their new car and have a lead foot, customers will complain anyway and the IQS rating suffers. In short, JD Powers IQS ratings suck. One cannot prove this, it simply is, in the same sense that Mt. Everest is, or that Alma Cogan isn't. Goodnight. 7. I think that a PC in tow does not require that a pin still be in place. If the PC is in tow, with the bag not out, then it is a PC in tow no matter why the bag isn't out. 8. I agree, their engines have a really bad reputation. If you just hide a key somewhere under the car, you won't get locked out. The touch key pad on the door handle is not very popular at all, I'm surprised you find it so valuable. Anyone watching you get into your car can get the code. Most people find the remote entry key fob more convenient by far. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 9. I have a LOT of experience dealing with the initial quality rankings from a manufacturer/designers standpoint. The goal of a low IQS score causes some awful decisions to be made because the IQS is a very deceptive measurement. For instance a car without cupholders will score better than a car with cupholders because there can't be any problems with them. A car without moving parts such as a lid covering the cupholders will score better than a car with such moving parts because there can't be any problems to report for parts that aren't there. A window that doesn't move up/down fast enough to the satisfaction of the owner gets reported as an initial quality problem, even if it was designed to move at that speed. Also, I think the dealership has much to do with how many problems get reported. If a dealer treats their customers well, then the customer is more likely to reward the mfg by overlooking and not reporting little things. If the dealer is a pain in the ass, then the customer will complain about everything they can. 10. I do not understand your usage of the term “Out of Sequence Deployment” in your statement. I am respectfully making an inquiry as to what exactly you mean? My understanding is that an “Out of Sequence Deployment” occurs when the closing loop breaks or the closing pin is unintentionally extracted, thus opening the container prior to the PC being released which has nothing at all to do with the type of material that is used to stow the suspension lines to the “Deployment Bag”. I have only around 500 jumps with Tube Stows (surgical tubing type material) with no incidence, but was cautioned by a couple very seasoned and experienced riggers (each with decades of familiarity) as to the possibility that this may increase my chance of having a “Bag Lock” malfunction which gave me reason to reevaluate my equipment configuration choice. After close consideration, I switched back to rubber-bands. That being said, prior to my use of Tube Stows I had experienced a “Bag Lock” malfunction which I did not pack, but the packer I was using was inexperienced and was utilizing sloppy line stowing techniques. BTW, the "Bag Lock" did not stand me up. What you are describing - “the canopy falling out before line stretch” is what I was taught is referred to as “Line Dump” no? To assist in preventing this occurrence from taking place, it was suggested to use properly configured bands and to keep up with the maintenance of them as well. I have also heard it said that “real line dump will kill or maim”, which makes sense to me as I can only imagine how violent this type of malfunction could be. Please forgive my lack of understanding if my information is incorrect, I am only inquiring to better understand the potential issues that may arise and to increase my body of knowledge… - By "out of sequence deployment", I mean the canopy coming out before line stretch due to the locking stows breaking. That is not the only type of out of sequence deployment, but the others aren't relevant to this discussion. I avoided the use of the term "line dump" because some take it to mean the non-locking stows dumping their lines, with the term "bag dump" meaning that the locking stows break or slip off, releasing the canopy before line stretch. I suppose I should have just said "canopy coming out of d-bag before line stretch due to locking stows breaking" to avoid any confusion about what terminology means what. I firmly believe I'm better off to avoid locking stows breaking. The trade off is clear to me. I make my own tube stows really cheap. 11. Quite right! We can agree on that. Those type of "Have you stopped beating your wife?" questions are reserved for the Repub candidates. 13. $500 for inner tie rods and an alignment? Wow, that is really way too much. You should also get new ball joints for that much, are you sure that is all that is wrong? A cassette player is a 'newer' feature? Does yours have an 8-track? You can get a new audio system installed, don't you know... I meant to say you should get a 'newer' instead of 'new' car if you have the money to burn. I realize that you understand the benefit of getting a lightly used vehicle, even if you aren't going to use money as firewood. 14. Bag locks should be attributed to crappy packing. There is a reason why we don't trust a couple weak rubber bands on a reserve freebag. Bag lock mals have still happened with rubber bands, they don't always break to prevent the mal. 15. I agree that your chances of a bag lock are increased with tube stows and the like, but I have a BIG problem with those that do not acknowledge there is a trade-off. Rubber stow bands (as locking stows) greatly increase your chances of having an out of sequence deployment. This is much more likely because the bands break SO easily, they are under great stress while the bag is being lifted off your back with the canopy then falling out before line stretch. Locking stows should not be so easy to break. Even the Jumpshack isn't comfortable with just a couple rubber bands as locking stows for their reserve speed-bag. I would much rather have a bag lock than an out of sequence and explosive opening. 16. What is the car? What is wrong with it? I don't understand you saying that donating it to charity is easier than trading it in. There is almost nothing easier than trading in a car, dealers make that especially easy because they get a good deal. If money really is so plentiful for you, then you definitely should get a new car, no need to wonder anymore. It is my theory that the new car smell is physically addictive. If you are exposed for long enough, you'll get a new car every couple years and justify the expense. If you don't get hooked, you'll buy the perfectly good cars discarded by the addicts. If the mfgs ever accidentally get rid of whatever causes the addiction, the auto industry will go all to hell. 20. I met a guy a few months ago that claimed to know the guy that invented it! He started going on about how one of the big 3 automakers bought it to keep it from the public, blah, blah. If it could, or had been done as has been claimed (just a carb, to an otherwise regular vehicle) then it would also have been done by others. At the risk of using an analogy, to claim that the desire to keep this off the market would outweigh the business advantage to be had is like claiming that a missile hit the Pentagon. 22. I agree the libs aren't supporting him, but are the leaders of the Democratic party calling for him to resign? Tom Delay is still supported because he was not at all so clearly guilty. Many think it quite likely he was innocent of the charges, that it was nothing more than a politically motivated prosecution. That is a big difference. Clinton didn't just get a blowjob, he was accused of rape, sexual imposition, and sexual harrasment. His perjury was related to his attempt to avoid prosecution on the Jones' lawsuit involving imposition and harrasment. 24. It doesn't surprise me that there would be such lame designs that would be proposed. What is a bit disturbing is that there must have been a large committee of people that are probably highly paid professionals. I can see them now, patting themselves on the back for their mod/cutting edge design that they had the wisdom to make the winner, "I say, this one is simply smashing!" Perhaps they'll have the good sense to admit their mistake and try again. That would bruise some egos, so it would have to be forced upon them by someone (higher authority) not involved in the original logo approval.
