Not at all true. You don't get more low rpm torque due to a multi-cylinder engine's steadier application of power. In fact, for engines of similar displacement and similar bore/stroke ratio, both tuned as racing engines for power, an engine with more cylinders will have a power and torque curve that peaks at a higher rpm. Contrary to what most think, horsepower isn't directly measured on a dynamometer. Torque is measured, and is converted to horsepower by the formula HP=(Torque(in ft-lbs)xrpm)/5252. The relationship between torque and power really is that simple. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 500cc is where good power is made??? Where in the world did you get that bit of engineering wisdom? There sure are a LOT of performance oriented engines with much smaller individual cylinder displacements than that. A long time ago, Honda went to the races with a 6 cylinder 250cc bike. A family car with a 65hp engine? Where did you get that? The current Honda Civic (a small car) has 140. Even my 18 year old Civic has 70 ponies. Some small cars still have engines in the sub-2 liter category. Some bikes have the same displacement. So, why aren't the disirable characteristics for motorcycles desirable for at least certain types of cars? I do agree that car drivers associate power with the number of cylinders instead of displacement. Of course they could also just compare the power of different vehicles/engines. However, I don't think bike riders understand so much more. It seems they simply know that they want the loudest throttle-roll-on-thundering sound possible, the most 'throttle blip' effect, and if their engine displacement is bigger than others, that is a bragging point. Those characteristics come from V-twins with the uneven firing orders. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Vibration and the rolling thunder sound is apparently very desirable for motorcycles. So why is it that there are no cars that have large displacement engines with very few cylinders? It seems to be universally accepted (wrongly) that cars with 4 cylinder engines are underpowered, and at least 6 cylinders are needed to have decent power. If the vehicle is a luxury car or large truck/SUV, then 8 cylinders or more is expected. Car manufacturers have accepted the bias, and don't bother to offer large displacement, powerful engines with fewer cylinders. Why is it that engines that are smooth and quiet are for cars, but so many popular bikes go the other way? There is not even a small portion of the autos available that offer large displacement, powerful engines from a small number of cylinders. Such engines should have the same appeal as they do on bikes, while also being cheaper and smaller. It should be remembered that the Offenhauser 4 cylinder racing engine was very competitive until the late '60s or so. Finally got my car, any suggestions on mods/add-ons?

Wow. Talk about missing a point. I didn't miss your point, I was simply making my own point. The journalist in the video said something quite misleading. Come on, guys nitpick details all the time, that's what guys do, especially in the bonfire, right? I've lost a total of 42 pounds, now at 203, which is not too bad for being 6'2". Haven't been this light for at least 17 years. My goal is 190. The claim that F1 cars aren't as fast is a bit misleading, as they probably have much smaller displacement, non-turbo engines and run on tracks with much shorter straightaways (still getting to 220 mph). Current F1 rules are for normally aspirated 2.4 liter V8 engines. A Honda Formula One car, in the Mojave desert achieved 415 km/h (258 mph) in 2006. Of course they have much better aerodynamics than a Veyron. A 2 liter turbocharged Honda Civic achieved 211 mph. Of course you enjoy it, smoking takes away the withdrawal symptoms. You need it to relax because the withdrawal symptoms from nicotine happen so quickly. People that have never smoked, and even those that have quit are able to relax without a cig. There are still bikes made with a normal seating/handlebar/footpeg position. Old school is still best, in my opinion. Skydiving isn't gross. I think that even cig smokers are repulsed by smoke from pipes, the smoke is very different and more intense than a cig. Cigarette smoke is really repulsive to non-smokers. Even after a smoker is done smoking, they still smell like an ashtray for quite a while. Of course you enjoy smoking, we all know it provides pleasures that non-smokers deny themselves. If smokers could slowly kill themselves and get that pleasure without stinking up the place and themselves, then perhaps only the people that loved the smoker would care. Quite right. People want to smoke when they're stressed, when they're sad, or when they're happy. Every occasion is a good time for a smoke. They are always there for the smoker, they never let them down. It is popular to ridicule anti-smoking advocates that want TV shows and movies to no longer have characters smoke. I am against it as a 'law', but think they are right. The movie Independence Day is a really good (bad) example. Smoking a cigar is an indispensable part of the celebration of his air combat victory. He even convinces the Jeff Goldblum character that he should enjoy a cigar when they expect to die. The clear message is that smoking provides great pleasure, it is how adults celebrate. I saw a drama/documentary on the Gen. Eisenhower's preparations for the Normandy invasion. I don't think there was a single scene where he was not smoking. I can't understand how this was necessary or added anything useful to the story.

Unfortunately, once people are addicted, smoking provides a multitude of pleasures. To quit smoking would mean giving up those pleasures. I hate cigarettes. There is an alternative to the extremes of riding position (chopper/cruiser vs crotch rocket). That riding position is simply a normal riding position, like almost all bikes had way way back when I was riding in the '80s. That is a position that allows you more control of the bike if it should slide, allows you to stand up for better control when you hit a bump. If you have your feet way out in front, you can't stand up on the pegs. I think the ability to absorb bumps with your butt off the seat to be necessary if you want to avoid being launched skyward. Perhaps it is my dirt bike experience that gives me a bias against the cruiser riding position. I think that street riders would benefit from the knowledge of how to control a bike when either/both wheels are sliding and when when hitting serious bumps/jumps. I thought part of the fun of riding was being able to go right over the top of what normally were barriers, but I usually rode a large dual purpose (street legal) type of dirt bike. I also enjoyed the occasional wheelie or jump when the road provided a natural ramp. Cruisers aren't very well suited for that type of fun. Why do so many people want to have the cruiser style bikes? The foot position is stupid. The V-twin design should provide good ground clearance for cornering but it doesn't. I hate the excessive noise that apparently an indispensable part of the cruiser experience. Many riders seem to have an obsessive compulsive disorder to 'blip' the throttle just to make more ear-splitting noise when stopped. I would like to have a mega powerful air horn to blast back at them. Cruiser style bikes do nothing in a high performance way except make noise. I would think that a Porter's max allowed speed would be slower than other turbine jump aircraft, making it the least appropriate for such fun. Many years ago, a Porter at a NW DZ suffered damage (I believe to the elevator) during a dive. There were 2 pilots on that load, they considered themselves lucky to be able to pull it out. Union Reps in Front of the Local Grocery Store
sundevil777 replied to ACMESkydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm not calling you a liar. Greg went to work at the Marysville plant back in 1990. I do know that he did not start as a temp. Back in 1990 they would hire people directly. That is no longer the case. The requirement for breaks is a law and I think we can agree that employers should comply with it. When a worker must start preparing during the break in order to be ready when the production line starts again, that is not complying with the law. I've heard that there was a class action lawsuit over this very issue, and employees were given some money as compensation. It seems they haven't learned the lesson. I just had to call an old buddy of mine whom I worked with on the railroad and ask him about this. He left the rails to go to work at the Honda plant in Marysville. I asked him about this. I have never been been harassed by jumping similar weight and wingloading as you. If I had been, I would have reminded them that I can still walk without a limp after many years in the sport. Not everyone likes to fly aggressively close to the ground, I definitely don't, and you shouldn't feel the need to try it. Union Reps in Front of the Local Grocery Store
sundevil777 replied to ACMESkydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
I think there should be 2 new laws regarding unions: 1) Union management should be required to get the same strike pay as any of their represented workers that are on strike. 2) Decisions on pay raises and promotions should include an evaluation of performance. Seniority should not be the only criteria. Many years ago, the engineer's union at Boeing fought to protect a couple guys that were caught sleeping at work. They would sneak off to an out of the way location and take long naps. My friend new them and knew that it had been happening for a long time. At the local Honda factory (non-union), many of the production jobs effectively don't even get a couple 10 minute breaks or 30 minute lunch break as required by law. This is because of the preparations needed before production restarts at the end of the break. You would think that they were union though, in that they all get paid the same regardless of the difficulty of the various jobs. Honda has thousands of temp workers (at about 1/2 the pay of the regular employees) that are required to work at least 2 years before they may be offered a regular job (I know one that worked 5 years before it was offered, and he works really hard). Gays protest Fort Lauderdale mayor's remarks

To use the term "banning" is misleading, because it implies that there is something going on beyond a library system choosing to not buy something. Libraries are not expected to have every book that is published. Freedom of speech is not related to what a library chooses to put on its shelves. Do you think the 'religion' of secular humanism should also be kept separate from the state. There is not much to distinguish it from those that thump bibles. My sociology 101 professor at Arizona State University was most definitely a preacher of secular humanism. What source for their water would you have preferred? Any under or above ground water source can also be contaminated. Better to start with water that has already been through a municipal water system. Reverse osmosis is much more/different than just passing water through a conventional filter.
