As others have said, they are sturdy and reliable. The older generation versions were are a body on frame construction like a truck, so they were rather stiff/bouncy compared to the more car like ride you'll get from the more car like unibody type construction SUV/crossover type vehicles. Unibody vehicles typically have more useful interior space. I think it is funny that the styling of the rear hatch was dictated by the optional first aid kit. Since you are asking for opinions, I'll assume you haven't already set you mind on just the XTerra, so what other vehicles are you also considering as alternatives? I am biased toward Hondas, and can recommend any generation of CRV, and if you can withstand the look of it, the Element also has available all wheel drive and an incredibly versatile interior. Do you recognize this jumper?

Yep, that was me! I decided to do a sliding on my feet (like skateboarding) exit down the inclined ramp, which then put me in a sit and blew off one of my booties. Yeeehaaa! When you say: You are ignoring the fact that simultaneous openings happen quite often, usually with good results. The good results of your incident aren't relevant because the reserve was never pulled into the path of the deploying main, correct? I don't mean to be rude, but when it is said there is no reason for debate about this topic, I can't help but argue. When the USPA training committee/whatever they are called decided to write the SIM as they did, it was because the debate is not clear as to what is the best strategy. The guys in that committee are some of the best in the sport, and acknowledged that the best strategy isn't obvious. There are other factors than just the chances of entanglement, such as whether it is wise to have another branch of the decision tree for the PCIT compared to other mals. Bill Booth thought not cutting away was better, and showed that in the decision tree that used to be on his website (can't find it anymore). This PD/army study is worth posting again, and should be read by anyone that hasn't already done so: http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/dualsq.pdf People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. You are ignoring the fact that simultaneous/near simultaneous deployments happen very often with good results. Of course it doesn't always happen that way, but cutting away first doesn't always give good results. I think it is not at all clear that you are better off to cutaway first. That conclusion ignores testing that was done, and ignores that many near simultaneous deployments happen with OK results. It is not nearly so common that the main is cutaway first, so we don't have nearly as much actual experience to base an assertion that cutting away first is better. Of course I realize both methods have ended badly. I just cannot agree that cutting away first is clearly the best strategy. If the main deploys simultaneously and is already cut away, everything still has to be pulled up and pass by as the reserve is also deploying and can interfere with the deploying reserve. If it is cutaway first, then the loose risers will not just go straight up, they will be flapping around as they go up, with the possibility of snagging the main (it has happened), especially if you have an RSL shackle that will be attached to a riser. If the main container only opens up after the reserve opening shock, then it will fall harmlessly down instead of up, and of course can be chopped with no concern at that time. I think your conclusions are incorrect and based on faulty assumptions. If this was not true, then there would be no doubt whether to cutaway first or not was better. I apologize for repeating myself from 4 years ago. I think this subject is important, interesting, and worthy of debate. I think that debate should not be based upon an incorrect assumption that cutting away first removes the possibility of an entanglement, or that not cutting away first results in a likely entanglement. The testing that has been done does not support those conclusions. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. How does your incident lead you to conclude you would have been better off to have cutaway first? A main can also entangle with the reserve after being cutaway - while departing the risers are whipping around and can snag the reserve. Are you saying your reserve PC didn't launch well/was in-tow? I used to ride around the desert north of Phoenix, never raced. It is generally not a good idea to directly try to get others to come out for a skydive. If they show interest after hearing you talk about how much you love it that is different, but to try to convince others that don't show an interest is not something you should really do. Honda Clarity: Fuel cell vehicle (hydrogen fueled)
sundevil777 replied to sundevil777's topic in The Bonfire
The first link I provided from the Temple of VTEC quotes a Honda calculation claiming an approximate equivalent of 68 mpg combined fuel economy. I would think that this means on a 'cost equivalent' basis (the cost of hydrogen to operate it would be as if it got 68 mpg of gasoline used), as opposed to a volume or weight of fuel used basis. I'm not really sure though, and can't find anymore specifics to confirm that. Honda Clarity: Fuel cell vehicle (hydrogen fueled)
sundevil777 replied to sundevil777's topic in The Bonfire
It will be available starting in the summer '08. Of course there won't be many of them, and only in 3 southern California cities (Torrance, Santa Monica, Irvine). It will be a 3 year $600/month lease including service/maintenance. The range will be about 270 miles, top speed of 100mph, acceleration like a 4 cylinder Accord. I think Honda is serious about this becoming a mass marketed vehicle in the not so distant future. They've invested a lot of money to execute a totally new, very nice design, and not just cram the hardware into some existing micro mini car. Not only can solar/wind/whatever power be used to split water to make hydrogen, but for some time now Honda has been developing a home generator/heating system powered by natural gas. It can also make hydrogen for a fuel cell vehicle with much less total CO2 emissions than a gasoline car. A link to a little info on this is in the Honda article below. Reading his name hit me like a slap in the face. I knew him from way back in the early 1980's, while hanging out with Kevin Vetter, Dave Good, and Bob Bader (sp?). Those veteran jumpers allowed this newbie at the time to learn so much and have so much fun partying with them. Blue skies my old friend, I wish I spent more time with you the last time I was back home at the DZ. It'll have to wait a while. I will assume you like the super bandz for the locking stows because they are so much tougher than conventional rubber bands. I do not like conventional bands for locking stows because they are so likely to break when I don't want them to, which can cause bag dump. I make my own tube stows from the bulk silicone tubing you can find in the fishing section of sporting goods stores (really cheap per foot). Use a pair of needlenose pliers to 'turn over' one end of the piece of tubing (turned inside-out) about 5mm. Insert the closed pliers into the other end if the piece of tubing and open the pliers to expand the tubing. Now take a pair of hemostats (sp?) or similar instrument to grab the turned over end of the tubing and insert it into the opened end. Carefully slide the tubing off the pliers and you're done. No need to glue anything. When you attach it to the d-bag, make sure to put the 'joint' of the tube stow in the area of the larkshead where there is little tension. In the seventh and final book, it is revealed that Dumbledore and Grindelwald were childhood friends, who were planning on a "new order" with muggles subservient to wizards. They had a falling out with each other and Dumbledore's brother Aberforth, and in the ensuing fight, Dumbledore's sister Arianna was killed. After that, Dumbledore reconsidered his position, but Grindelwald remained steadfastly "evil". In later years, Grindelwald rose to power (in a bad way) and Dumbledore was obliged to remove him from power. It was considered one of the greatest modern duels between wizards. Grindelwald had previously built a prison in which he intended to incarcerate those who were against him, but instead, Dumbledore jailed Grindelwald in his own prison after Dumbledore beat him in the duel. There, Grindelwald remained to his dying day. Sorry if I get some facts wrong - this is all from memory. Now JK is alluding that Dumbledore was in love with Grindelwald when they were still young, although she hasn't mentioned if the love was requited by Grindelwald. None of it has any real relevance to the HP storyline, so it's not surprising that it was omitted. Thank you. For her to say, "I always thought of him as gay", but to never have anything in the books to indicate it, is really strange. Nope.. never have ridden around in my big ole pickup truck....looking for a republican to beat into becoming a moderate.... A desire to beat a republican into something else - that would not be a 'fear of', that would be a 'hatred of'. Nevertheless, I accept your claim that you don't have an irrational fear of republicans, so I won't call you a -phobe. If you would grant that same courtesy to others, it would be nice. The study was quite flawed/designed to produce a desired result, as discussed in other threads. A '-phobe' should be used to mean an irrational fear of something. It isn't just an opinion of mine, it is the definition. Lefties apply the word homophobe to anyone that objects to their overt sexual displays during gay days at disneyland/gay pride parades, or anything else that gay rights advocates want. I think the use of the term is designed to mislead. Such use of the term "-phobe" should mean that you are a conservativephobe/republicanphobe. Perhaps you do have an irrational fear of them, but I think opposition to the conservative agenda is distinct from a phobia. Given that the term "phony soldiers" had been used/defined BEFORE the incident in question on Rush's show (used by Rush and other media sources to mean those that were indeed truly phony, fake soldiers), I say that your entire post is a bunch of bullshit. Did Dumbledore do or say something in the books (perhaps that until now wasn't noticed) to support this assertion, or is it just something the author wants to assert now? It seems a rather meaningless statement unless there was something in the books to back it up. A program manager must be in charge of schedule, budget, and the manpower that actually does the work in the trenches. Unless you don't actually have any manpower to manage, you don't do the real work yourself, you just get to make powerpoint slides to report the results of that work to those that approve your schedule and budget, and ask for more schedule and budget. The farther up the program management ladder you go, the farther away from the real 'science/engineering' you get, but the more influence you can have over what others are supposed to do and the credit that can be claimed for it. I think there is a corollary of Murphy's law that applies here. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Yes, of course. However that is not the basis of the attack on Rush. The claim is much more than that. He's not trying to cover anything, just trying to get the whole story reported, and to make Harry Reed and others look the the idiots they are for believing what mediamatters.org says (Hillary claims responsibility for this group, so taking news from them isn't too wise).
