SHHH.............. Cops may show up................ Especially a fat one who hasn't jumped in several months (me)........... It would be great to meet you all! I've met a few, but not many of those listed. Hopefully I'll get a kitchen pass. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!" -
You ever help any cops burglarize houses? Know of any felonies committed by your colleagues? I know, I'll just let it all go and allow the gov to manipulate the people with teh people by giving them guns, badges and immunity. Let's make Kent State look like a picnic. Dissent is the cornerstone of Americana says the ACLU; what does the GOP say? Fewer freedoms and less open dissent? I know. Hmmm..........the answers to your questions would be no. But then again I'm just one of those guys everyone loves to hate......until I'm needed, then everyone is all smiles (usually). I'm not gonna argue with you dude, I'll never be able to change your mind. I sleep very soundly at night knowing I do the best possible job I can. Doing a job many people would not be capable of doing. I clean up social messes, and clean them up quite well if I do say so myself. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

............nah, I won't bite...................... Is it hard to walk evenly with that chip on your shoulder? "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

I joined the USAF when I was 17 and still in high school. After several months of delayed entry I went to basic training. I did four years of active duty and traveled the world. I was out for a year and then went into the active reserve and continued to travel. I'm going to be 40 this year and have no regrets. I enjoy military life and would recommend it as a viable career choice. I've been called to active duty three times in the last 6 years, again with no regrets. At this point in history I have no desire to retire, the military needs experienced old guys like me. Oh yea, ...........they were gonna let me blow shit up!!! Same to you! Coming this way anytime this year? "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

Alot of guys I know who deployed bought their own Glocks. The most popular was the 19, especially with tankers and aircrew. 9mm was popular because you can find ammo for it just about anywhere. We (our PD) carry Glock 19's and the weapon itself is just about as rugged as the 1911. 9mm has many draw backs, we recently had a shooting where our 9mm would'nt penetrate a 1990 Plymouth Acclaim's car door (several rounds). We carry +P+ Corbon ammo, one of the hottest 9mm at 1300fps. The .45 is a man stopper, I wish we would go to the Glock .45 As far as the military goes, Glock in any caliber would be a vast improvement over the the piece of shit M9. Depends, Some require a four year degree, some reqiure a two-year or certain number of hours. Most require just a high school diploma to get in the door.` Some departments will substitute four years of military service/experience in lieu of a degree. Advancement is a different story. You get what you pay for. Our pay has increased over the past few years. We are attracting mainly college grads. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

Did you used to be a cop? Geez...............what happend............ "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

I don't even bite on that one anymore. We have guys with everything from a high school education to masters degrees. Most lie somewhere in between. My signature line says it all................ "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

I hate to compare jobs BUT, the thing unique to police work is the human factor. In your job, if you fail to follow tech data then there is a given result. Imagine an engine or airplane knowing what you are going to do, then doing one or several things to prevent you from doing it, or undoing what you did. All this with conscious thought and planning, not circumstances. The point I'm trying to make is, people who have jobs that require dealing with human factor are much less likely to point fingers until they know all facts. I'm sure you'll find that out when you start in the medical field. All we've seen here is a news report, that alone does not constitute fact. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

Another shit sandwich, with the local cops as the meat. This is a tough one, if it was a restraining/protective order then yes, it was the cops job to protect these people. BUT, if this was some kind of custodial agreement, then no, (at least here) it's not the cop's job to protect individuals in these situations. Depends on the wording. Sounds like word games but it's reality. We do not enforce civil custodial agreements unless there is known actual criminal conduct (such as abuse). However these situations normally end up in a protection order, which is required by state law to be enforced. If a mom or dad violates a civil custody order, it is handled through civil court until someone files contempt of court charges (usually a judge.) I wasn't there so I will withhold any comment. A decision was made and three little girls are dead. The cops are the last ones who wanted that to happen. That's the rub, we (LEO's) make a bad decision and people can die, how many of you can say that? Many people we deal with expect us to SOLVE their problems, many times these problems have brewed for years. These same people want the problem solved NOW. I always tell, and I have my men tell people we can help solve their problems, but only they can ultimately solve them. I'm not saying that is the case here but, it can become a factor when you are constantly thrust into the middle of these kinds of situations. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

I've read the whole thread and I agree with Billvon (kinda scary huh?). I drew the same conclusions. Even good people screw up, even good people do stupid things. Many top-notch jumpers kill or injure themselves doing not so smart things. This agent screwed up royally and I'm sure he paid for it medically, then administratively. I've been in law enforcement for a long time, if you're around firearms long enough accidents ARE going to happen. This doesn't make them acceptable, but reality dictates this. You learn from them and look at preventive measures. When I taught the DARE program I used to disassemble my Glock in the classroom (yes it was loaded). I took extreme care when doing this, as I always do. I would then go into a firearms safety speech. This agent was doing the same, except he managed to shoot himself. Full-Auto Whuffo pops his cherry, and an old Buick
skycop replied to Kennedy's topic in Speakers Corner
I've been to the Knob Creek shoot. You want to talk about an eclectic mix of people. There are yuppies, hillbillies, and everything in between. I mean really, fully automatic weapons and explosives, does it get any better than that Hell one dude had a flamethrower!! They have all kinds of junk set up downrange, any piece of junk with an orange cone in front blows up when you shoot it........... "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!" -
Nah, seeing what I want to see makes the world easier to live in................. Kinda like Mr. Blue sky "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

Hmmm...... I'm glad you can speak for ALL teachers out there! I'm sure they all agree with you. Also, wasn't Laura Bush a real live teacher? And the tons of WMD remark, well heck ask the Kurds, I'm sure they would agree with you too. If you read between the lines of the article, it sounds to me like this is some sort of veiled political statement, at the kids expense. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

TO ALL: Marines, Soldiers, Airman, and Seamen
skycop replied to DiverDiver's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm with you Matt!! Keep your head down and rounds going down range!! I also say thank you to DiverDiver for starting this thread. All of us in the military both active, guard, and reserve appreciate the support we have gotten form the VAST majority of the public. There always going to be those who stand on the sidelines and snipe. That is where they belong......on the sidelines. IMHO "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!" -
Hmmm............. In the old days of police work they were called "drop guns". "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

Yes, I took a class (police related) that compared death rates per capita in various occupations. I can't quote the source however. My point was that police work is not as dangerous as many think BUT, the element and type of danger is very different when compared to other occupations. If I remember correctly law enforcement was #12 in dangerous occupations. The most dangerous was commercial crab fishing. Firefighters finished higher than law enforcement in this particular study. Can some stats geek help me out here? I just did a quick google on "most dangerous jobs". The most dangerous went back and forth (depending on the year) between timber workers and fishing workers. The highest law enforcement I saw was 8th. Farming was consistently around 8th. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

It is more dangerous to be a farmer than a cop, statistically. The one thing that makes police work unique is the human factor. If you are a steel worker and crawl around on beams for a living you know the risks. Fall off the beam and you can get hurt or killed. The risks are obvious and identifiable. The unique thing about police work is that the potential source of injury can conspire and plan to injure or kill you. Also potentially any situation can be harmful, even the most seemingly innocent ones. This is what sets police work apart from most other occupations. Do we walk the "line of death" everyday, the answer would be a resounding no. There are many more dangerous occupations out there but, rarely more with potential situations that can cause injury or death.IMHO "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"
