Because there is nothing simple about BASE jumping. Mastering skills such as "BASIC" rigging will allow to asses and maintain your gear. It is a very necessary skill to have if you want longevity in this sport. I have a friend who made a rigging error last year......... and guess what......... He payed with his life. O.K. "Stranger", My opinion on people wanting "Instant Massive Overwhelming Gratification Syndrome".... everyone wants to fly farther, longer, and easier. I say the proof is in the pudding. I know from a financial point it would be nice to skip the first few steps and just buy the Mac-Daddy large winged suit.....but....... One jump on a GTI , and a few PF tracking jumps with low all around jump numbers is a recipe for disaster. I think you should hijack the suit from the little round kid in Moab, and master it. When I say that the proof is in the pudding, I mean that a protrack telling you how efficient you fly is your best gauge. Once you can fly the suit efficiently, barrel roll, front and back flip, and pull in full as well as collapsed flight, once you feel so at home in the suit that a normal skydive feels odd to you ...... then maybe.... maybe....... your ready to attempt something more advanced....... as in suits or BASE. So many people buy a suit, make a jump every other week on it , placing a handful of jumps on it total before they go out and try their first Bird-BASE jump. Why..... too claim that they've made a wingsuit BASE jump??? I'd say that on average if you can fly a suit at 60 mph thru most of a skydive, that on a BASE jump, you'll be 10-20 mph faster than that. Stress, pressure, as well as foreign sub-terminal air are but a few factors. Only CURRENT/ Jedi-Wingsuit guys are sticking it . People who have put in the effort , doing 5-10 wingsuit jumps a day out of airplanes to master their flight skills, wingsuit jump numbers in the 100's. Everyone else is just strapping their arms down for minimal more distance. People who are trying to out-fly scree or talus without truly mastering the suit are just looking to make Nicks list in my opinion. There are obviously people out there with 1000's of skydives that go out and pick up wingsuit flying faster than usual. But back to what I was saying earlier........ it doesn't take much to be stable, do Birdy-RW, or even get a halfway decent flight out of a suit. It takes a lot to make those 10 seconds turn into 15-20..... safely. As far as skipping the smaller suits in favor of a larger winged unit. I'd go make 20-50 jumps on a GTI or Classic2 and then see what happens when you try out something Mac-Daddy.(That would be Robert's news suit!!) Don't slow yourself down by going to fast..... the money you spend going slow, and learning right will save your life someday.....maybe not tomorrow..... but maybe some other day that your actions have gotten your ass into a situation that your experience can only get you out of. Just my .02 $$$ ..... but if you make like 100 wingsuit jump...... won't that like double or even triple your total skydives????? HEE-HEEEE p.s. One Armed Bandit says Monroe is spelled MONROE..... Climbing/Slackline/B.A.S.E. Film Festival in Boulder,CO
basehoundsam replied to basehoundsam's topic in Archive
Some friends and I have decided to organize a film festival in Boulder ,CO at the Fox Theater in early Dec.. So far the show looks like this..... Steph Davis and Dean Potter will do a combination of slide show and multi media including a 10 Minute film "Highliner" by Heinz Zak, that is showing at the Banf Film Festival this weekend. They are two of the most talented as well as amazing and accomplished people in the world. Triax will have a short version of C2, as well as some other fun films. After the presentation there will be a free Disco-Inferno/Rave/Slackline party at the Fox. For anyone thats unfamiliar with the Fox, it is one of the cooler music venues in the U.S. This event will be sponsored by Patagonia, Black Diamond, The Spot Bouldering Gym, Triax Films, Adrenaline Exploits, as well as one or two more local Businesses. This show will cost around 15 bucks, but will be way worthy. The Disco/Waco climber party afterwards should be pretty world class as well..... All I can say is watch out for SpiderBaby.....that guy knows how to PARTY!!!!!! Jay Epstein Ramirez www.adrenalineexploits.com -
Just my .02 $$$....... For all around use especially around Colorado and Moab, especially slider down ..... Vertigo WarlocK ...... it packs up the "Easiest" . It is my favorite all around unit. For wingsuit and slider up terminal jump I love my Gargoyle and WS Extreme..... they perform almost identically ....... you would only notice the difference if you were one of the few Jedi Bird/Basers out there.....I am not even close..... to me they perform identically in this realm. They require a little more "Love" to close up..... but are as "clean" as it gets at opening during forward movement. For really large (2000 + ft) walls I still prefer to jump my Sorcerors(I have 2). I have had amazing heading performance .... even though these containers are the most difficult to pack out of the group. I look at it as a container that gives you a warm fuzzy feeling when your standing on that extra large and terrifying exit point. Oh..... and ..... The Phoenix Fly Tracking Suit has changed my life.......... I kid you not....... talk about putting some distance between you and your favorite terminal objects.... without the downsides of a wingsuit. Jay Epstein Ramirez www.adrenalineexploits.com

NPS sites in Colorado during the Go-Fast Gorge Event
basehoundsam replied to basehoundsam's topic in Archive
Just a heads up to all you horny jumpers out there.........the parks services in Colorado/Utah area are currently working with a few people to potentially make some headway in the pursuit of permitted jumping inside of parks in the very near future. Potentially members of the NPS may/may not be present at the Bridge . It would be a real setback in the efforts to open up National Parks if anyone was to attempt to make any jumps into the currently closed parks. I stress this because other people(I am not really included in these efforts at the moment) are actually really really close to making it happen........... So PLEASE everyone.... refrain from any extra-Colorado activities for a period of time around the Games. We really need to look like pro's on this one......... Jay Epstein Ramirez www.adrenalineexploits.com -
Just received my new purple/black Phoenix-Fly suit in the mail. I must say I am more than impressed with the workmanship and design. I'll toss it out of the plane a few times this weekend before heading to Moab for Clints out of control Skydiving/Paraglider Jumping/ BASE Boogie. I will be organizing wing suit and tracking jumps thru-out the weekend. I may have some suits of all different types for folks to try out. The next couple of weeks should prove to be fun as far as testing these guys in different environments. Jay E Ramirez www.adrenalineexploits.com

Approx. a year and a half ago, I lost a Purple/Black tie-die Vertigo Warlock out of the back of my truck in Colorado. (the tailgate opened up in transit). We noticed it a mile down the road , turned around and recovered one of the two rigs that had fallen out. Two days ago someone called Jimmy at Vertigo and explained that they had found a parachute in the middle of the road, and had taken it home and forgotten about it until now. Jimmy informed them that the story of me losing that rig was kinda the local joke, and gave them my phone number. I'm hoping that they will still call. Incase their intentions are not pure, please please keep an eye out for any non-jumpers trying to sell my rig. If approached, please retain contact info, and let people know there is a reward for any info leading to my rig. Thank you one and all for keeping an eye out, Jay Epstein Ramirez www.Adrenalineexploits.com p.s. This rig had stainless hardware and contained a rainbow colored Dagger 222.

Hey Jason, I have some personal video I'd love to show you sometime of myself landing in a very fast moving river. I get sucked downstream, and manage to hang the canopy up on a river rock. I end up chopping that puppy. It took three of us to pull it out. The current ripped the stitching out of a riser, and turned it into a flat piece of webbing. I would strongly suggest not ever landing in a wing-suit in any type of moving water !!!! Jay Epstein Ramirez www.adrenalineexploits.com

If the party leaves a rope dangling into the cave the birds hit it on their way out in the morning. They have to climb out in a slowly ascending spiral. They swirl out of the cave in such a huge torrent in the very early morning and can't see the rope hanging there. I would imagine that a rope left hanging for the morning swarm might indeed kill 50-100 birds. Cavers and BASErs alike must be aware of this hazard and be sensitive to the birds' need for clear airspace during the morning. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jon, Unfortunately ....... what you are repeating is basic myth. I appreciate that you have obviously been to the cave, but there have been many caving group that have not just left a rope, but also spent the night in the cave. There have been multiple groups that have actually rappelled down super early morning to film the birds leaving. Never once has a bird/rope strike been reported or seen. The council members have even spent the night in the cave before, just to see if a rope poses a danger. If there was a major problem with bird/rope strikes , there would be a pile of dead swallows at the impact point right below the rope every morning. As there is no air current , you would expect them to all be within 100-200 feet of the rope. This just is not the case. Statements like "I would imagine that a rope left hanging for the morning swarm might indeed kill 50-100 birds." are just that ..... speculation. Unless you have seen with your own eyes these 50-100 birds dying, then you are doing just that..... "IMAGINING". Making unsupported statements like this is exactly what the few eco-people who want to see the cave closed use for ammunition. Setting up a time lapse camera in the morning, or doing a real study would put and end to such unfounded statements. I believe the french guys who aid climbed out had lines hanging for almost three weeks without a single strike. I know the Canadian/French group who tightroped the cave had a tightrope hanging for about 10 days, with no impact to the cave. I heard they even brought a bird research person with them . This entire ban is NOT about "rope-strikes" !!!!! They are claiming that we are hitting birds in freefall, and flying into them under canopy. They are not banning cavers or rope-use activities. Like I said in my original post, it's because there are people representing adventure/sports companies that sell rappelling trips to the cave that they are not losing access. Mexico has a very fragile political environment. Lies are easily spread and embellished..... even to the point of being printed in the newspaper as gospel. Once a movement starts there ....... it can be very difficult and costly to change peoples minds. Thanks, Jay Epstein Ramirez www.adrenalineexploits.com p.s. Don't forget to write a letter......it could be the straw that breaks the tourism camels back!!!!!!!!!
