  1. Another recommended principle is to use a reserve that is about the same size as your main. This is because if you have a malfunction with both canopies out simultaneously, same sizes are much more stable. One smaller and one larger doesn't play well together.
  2. Um, are you considering getting a small reserve in order to have soft openings? Because if you are, you should re-think that idea. Reserve rides are rare. And when you need one, you might need it to open FAST. Be willing to accept a hard opening on a reserve, because it doesn't happen very often, and it could make the difference between life and death. Do you really want a snivel when you're down to 1,000' of altitude to live? Additionally, a reserve ride might have you landing off-airport, and for that you'll want a larger, slower parachute for a possibly tight landing in unfamiliar territory. Do you want to try and do a high speed swoop into a tiny back yard? If youi've answered "yes" to these questions, then I wish you luck!
  3. But they're called "Air Jordan's", and therefore should be as light as a feather, and incapable of harming anyone. In fact, when he stomped on the guy's face, he was just trying to tickle him. It's all Nike's fault! Now, if you do the same thing with "Waffle Stompers", then you shouldn't be surprised if they leave the impression of waffles on the guys face.
  4. This thread reminds me of the another story in the news: http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/story/24453054/2014/01/15/shopper-accused-of-attacking-man-at-checkout-counter What the heck makes people respond with violence to such petty offenses? I don't get it. These guys are wound way too tight... I can see the cop, a law and order guy, used to having people obey the rules. And also used to having people obey him when he gives orders. The texting guy was probably shot more for "contempt of cop" than for texting. How dare he not obey my orders!
  5. It's weird the way only certain things get people riled up. Alcohol, tobacco, obesity and cars kills hundreds of thousands annually, and that doesn't seem to bother anyone at all, to the point of wanting to ban the products involved. But for a few rare mass shootings, those same people are willing to eliminate all gun rights. I don't get it.
  6. We can't help you if you don't tell us what you need help with.
  7. According to the news story the theatre prohibits weapons, so it is probably a violation of their company policy, but that doesn't make it a violation of state law. All the theatre can do is ask you to leave, and if you don't, have you arrested for trespass. At any rate, that covers them legally in this incident. When someone sues them for not keeping the armed nut out, they can just say; "Hey, we prohibit weapons and he brought one in anyway!" What else can they do - have everyone scanned by metal detectors like at the airport? Heck, I don't want to do that when I go see a movie.
  8. How about: "Anyone too afraid to make a skydive without an AAD should have their skydiving license taken away." Sound good to you?
  9. Note that the definition he uses of a mass shooting is the murder of four or more victims in a single episode. So that's at least 80 people out of a nation of 317 million. Or about one out of every 4 million people. America also kills 35,000 people per year in traffic accidents, many of which are by drunk drivers - about one out of every 9,000 people. So you're over 400 times more likely to be killed in a traffic accident than in a mass shooting. Yet, guess which one people fear the most? Go figure... Report link: http://hsx.sagepub.com/content/18/1/125.full.pdf+html Quote from "Conclusions": "Eliminating the risk of mass murder would involve extreme steps that we are unable or unwilling to take—abolishing the Second Amendment, achieving full employment, restoring our sense of community, and rounding up anyone who looks or acts at all suspicious. Mass murder just may be a price we must pay for living in a society where personal freedom is so highly valued."
  10. When you link to an article without comment or context the default assumption is that the article speaks for you. If you don't say or even hint otherwise then you don't get to act pissy if someone replies on the assumption that you agree with the article's stance. (And it really is the author of the article who's getting uptight. Damn!) Maybe you should reconsider your default assumptions. Twas not I that was pissy, but rather you guys who are attacking me because of your incorrect default assumptions. Sheesh. Lighten up, folks.
  11. Except, of course, the entire article and web site you linked. None of which has anything to do with MY mood. P.S. Don't know why this got moved to speaker's corner, as no one has said a thing about politics...
  12. Would you? Nothing in my message indicates that I didn't understand the joking nature of the flippant comment. So one should not presume so. I'm just going with the flow. And it seems a few folks, like yourself, are actually the ones who are getting uptight over this. I guess it's the nature of this means of communication, when the writer's intent is so easy to misconstrue. But hey, I know some people just love to go on the attack all the time. If I use a smiley-face emoticon next time, would that help?
  13. Incorrect. The reason the RSL is detachable is so a post-landing cutaway can be performed if necessary without deploying the reserve, or for when an RSL-equipped rig is used for disciplines like camera work or CReW when an RSL is not recommended. Where do you people get this stuff???? Our two statements are not incompatible.

  15. What if he had stabbed the guy with a pocketknife? Would you be calling for full on psych evals every couple of months for pocketknife carriers? I think justice could have been done by waiting until the movie started before taking any action. And then, the action would be to snatch the phone out of his hand and throw it up against the wall. Problem solved, everyone lives.
  16. Correct. Because if the RSL was perfect for every emergency scenario, then there wouldn't be the need to even have the shackle in the first place, and located where we can reach it. They could just design rigs with the RSL permanently affixed in an out of the way location where it wasn't exposed. But the very fact that we do have an accessible and disconnectable RSL, is recognition of the fact by gear manufacturers that sometimes you might NOT want to use it. And thuse we have have the design that we do, and the option to choose whether or not to leave it engaged.
  17. Article: "Congress: More Democrat millionaires than Republican . . . and here’s why" Link: http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/60413 Quotes: "But what’s really interesting about the story is that it tells us there are more Democrats than Republicans in Congress who are millionaires." "Both parties love millionaires, and both parties are full of millionaires. The difference is that one party publicly demonizes millionaires who make their money in the private sector, even as it continues to grow the political/governmental world in which even more of them are striking it rich."
  18. That's a case where colors seem kind of silly. It's a bottom of container location, behind your ass and under your rig, which you can't possibly see in freefall anyway. It's deployed by feel only. So it could be any darned color you want, and it wouldn't matter one whit. (What's a whit?) What should count there is the tactile shape and feel of the handle - since you're going by feel alone, it's got to be something easily recognizable by feel alone, and not confused with some other part of the rig.
  19. The good folks at Healthnet. Where does Healthnet get the money to pay for it?
  20. There was also this related item in recent news: "Judge scraps Chicago's ban on retail gun shops" http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-01-07/news/chi-citys-gun-ordinance-ruled-unconstitutional-by-federal-judge-20140106_1_gun-ordinance-gun-rights-advocates-gun-ranges
  21. This exactly. Like I said, I've used a belly band for freeflying an like it a lot.
