  1. To brew very very good beers ? more seriously, this is just the heritage of history (royal families and so on ...) That whole region serves a very necessary purpose - they are an early warning system in case any large European country gets land grabby. kinda like a canary in a mine or a smoke detector (that, and the beers) ... 2. that's my point - taxing it will make it worse for those industries and their employees. Not better. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  3. I suspect that those that are really positively impacted by this change aren't in the market for new cars. They need the money for buying food and clothes. those that buy those new cars likely could do it before My concern is knee jerk tax increases that won't go away once the price of gas goes up. And the fact that so many will self-righteously applaud it. Obviously the thouands employed in the oil industry (and secondary industries) who are about to lose their jobs may have a different view on this. Can you elaborate? How does higher taxes affect these employees? (other than they have to buy gas too and will have to pay more......and they also have to buy food and clothes whether they keep or lose their jobs) Or do you mean that lower prices will temporarily discourage new drilling? I see that (though it's not lower prices, but lower profits - and extra taxing doesn't affect that at all = it's a government grab from gas consumers. Those employees are out of it regardless. In fact, more taxes discourage gas sales, so it's even worse for those employees. And Even if the money did go to big oil, the money freed up in the free market will also encourage other businesses to move up. That'll create replacement jobs. Why do you want to keep people in other industries unemployed? ; ) the economy is a self balancing type of system. Do you want to arbitrarily try to force it static so things don't change? ... 6. and we are seeing it right now, it's an amazing boost Our state has and URGENT gas tax increase on the table right now. Clearly they consider this boon to be the sole property of government and this improved outlook and the ability of gas users to keep more money in their pockets is abhorrent to government. We need to nip any economic improvements in the bud or the populace might go get 'uppity'. ... 8. Congress and the President quickly take action to redefine "socks" as a "Healthcare Device". Thus making socks available under the Universal Government Healthcare Plans for less than $75 per pair. A new 50% tax on sockmakers was approved unanimously in Congress, with only 70 member abstaining from the vote as they decided they now had enough "side income" to start planning their vacations immediately on their laptops. ... 10. Hyperbolic trollery of very bad taste designed to elicit a negative reaction or even a censure action if you can jack up a couple people on it. Not sure the point since this crowd already gets the analogy. I doubt there's anyone here that needs the education you're trying to pre-stage. ... 11. What did they 'ask for'? a mass shooting? I doubt it. most likely they were just trying to titillate their customer base and sell some ad revenue. I'd accuse them of being naive and stupid at best, purposefully provoking at worst, but certainly NOT culpable for the killing in anyway. Is this really your point? HOW one responds to provocation is 100% the responsibility of that person. ... 12. It's just.... the staff at Charlie Hedbo are NOT heroes - they are instigators (but still just doing their jobs because that IS their job). the heroes will be those people that step up and protect the right of "Charlie Hebdo"s to write and say anything and everything and feel able to do that without being slaughtered. Maybe insulted, protested against, mocked, derided for being classless and non-value added, litigated against, etc. But not physically attacked and killed. And not obstructed by any government either. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  13. I think there are only a couple people doing that. But most are not. Either way, it's a crappy strawman and you're just trying to spin up (successfully ) a couple people. The bar/tavern analogy is accurate but not complete. The asshole yelling out insults is not just trading jokes with his buddies. He is Intentionally try to start something. Then, when he gets beat up, he cries foul/fowl. 1 - Frankly, he should be able to be a total and loud asshole and he "shouldn't" get beat up. But he's still an asshole. Not a hero of free speech, for sure. 2 - No one is surprised he got beat up (I think that's the gist of most of the posts you are trying take offense at). 3 - regardless, the attacker is 100% responsible for the attack - those that don't agree with this have some weird agenda they are trying to push (IMO) Some observer in the bar saying, "wow, that asshole was just looking to get punched" is not 'excusing' the behavior of the attacker, he's just commenting on how it came about. I think comparing "Charlie" to those guys from Westboro is a better comparison. They are assholes, but they don't get beat up or killed. "Charlie" is an asshole, purposely trying to incite a 'response', but the guys he attacked responded 100% in the wrong. The statement of the problem is how the 'beehive' reacts to the poking. The right to ANY type of speech, no matter how offensive or what buttons it's intent to push are, should be protected. If we really mean it, we have to protect trolls no matter what. These murderers could take a page from the people opposing the Westboro crowd. Blockades, ignoring them, mockery, derision, counter protests, law suits = good Killing, attacking injuring = seriously wrong Trying to change governments to get laws changed to their restrictive philosophy = fundamentally wrong and insidious the most that can be done with media and speech is have a discussion about the idea of it being a responsibility to try to have productive and courteous speech. but that has to be VOLUNTARY on the part of the cartoonists and writers. and you don't sell a lot of copy with that method. I really hate shock journalism. I think it's destructive and lazy and opportunistic and makes everything worse that these juveniles claim they are exercising. That said, it has to be protected because the limits of freedom need to be protected so the heart of freedoms don't get abused. ... 15. this is going around - http://www.fox10phoenix.com/clip/11014328/activist-critical-of-police-undergoes-use-of-force-scenarios so sorry to the usual crowd that it's a Fox local station, I know that's automatic discard for some Every rabid activist needs to get this type of more productive exposure. much better than just angry dialogue. One thing that good cops do, they get to know as many people as they can in their coverage areas. They can make better decisions if the guy in front of them is someone they've observed grow up, rather than dealing with a total stranger (i.e., completely unpredictable). People can mock concepts like "Mayberry" and "Barney Fife" stereotypes, but cops that live and breath with the people they protect is the best possible scenario available. ... 16. in all honesty, it's Marvel. you should check and see if they have already before using that as a mockery. They'll make a superhero for everyone and anyone..... "You want a wheelchair bound cat loving dark attitude flying version of the Green Lantern? YOU GET a wheelchair bound cat loving dark attitude flying version of the Green Lantern - you get FOUR of them from each gender and a couple ethnicities" You get a superhero You get a superhero and You get a superhero do I get a superhero? YES, you also get a superhero and don't get me started on DC. WONDER WOMAN CAN'T FLY - seriously, why the heck does she have the invisible jet. It would be interesting to compare with people that went to college, trade school, military, and straight to the work force at critical times of life: Say - just after high school (or time of enlistment), 2 and 4 years in, and then 10 years later or so...... 24. Russia's scorched earth tactic was likely one of the biggest contributors to the team effort that defeated the Nazi's for sure. I'm not even sure why you guys are pissing on this topic. I don't think the Nazi's (and their allies) would have been beat if any of the players hadn't stepped in. Certainly the US couldn't have done it alone (as was implied earlier), but certainly we would have failed had the US NOT come in either (as the counter arguments seem to so desperately wish) ...
