  1. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO..... MY unfair, overgeneralized, ridiculous stereotypes about people and groups are always true. EVERYONE ELSE'S unfair, overgeneralized, ridiculous stereotypes are just based in ignorance and a media that overhypes the tiny loud faction of weird fringe groups. Even when mine and the other's are the same.....mine is true, they are being silly and lazy ... 2. interesting - punching holes in the body of a child before they are of an age to make up their own mind about it. I wonder how many people vehemently opposed to circumcision have no issue mutilating their daughters. Or if there's a correlation even....... ... 3. probably more of a role model to televangelists, and shysters, and community organizers, and con-artists, and tax cheats, and young people of all backgrounds looking to sneak a quick buck and leave illegitimate babies all over the nation everyone needs a role model - each of us needs to pick what we want to be good at and find someone that's really good at it already and see how they do it. It's a bit narrow minded to only choose from those that look like you though. Al can be a role model for all sorts of scum bags looking to make money off of the angry and uninformed. ... 4. OHHHHHH, so now there's a MAGICAL force coming from the moon that works with the rotation of the earth to cause the water on the planet to have weird levels moving around And now I suppose I'm gonna be told this mysteriously magical 'moon force' is slowing down the rotation of the earth and throwing the moon out to a bigger and bigger orbital distance next thing you know you'll be telling me there isn't any cheese on the moon ... 5. How about we hypothesize some measureable long term effects and determine some undesired end point and its intersect (date). And then see if the trends will validate the hypothesis at some interim date? Then react appropriately on the confirmed hypothesis......... This sounds reasonable, I can't imagine anyone responding violently or with disdain or name calling on that plan of action..... ... 6. frankly - 'deserves' isn't a word that should come into play in this discussion since the choice to tip should be 100% about the giver (for any or no reason), not the recipient. "if it's not mandatory or implied mandatory" that's the point isn't it? How over the top can a transaction be "implied" that it just crosses the line. ... 7. 1 - tips - purely voluntary and not expected at all and not even a tiny bit a part of social expectation. and the employee is paid such that they can show up and get zero tips. Good or bad service can be relayed to the manager and people get hired and fired directly by management - not indirectly because they are crappy and don't get sufficient tips. ----- YES, ABSOLUTELY (we can always give money away 'just because') 2 - tips - part of social convention where you are almost made to feel forced to give no matter what, where the 'exception' is not tipping - NO, ABSOLUTELY 3 - tips - tips jars, little tips envelopes, signs the state "we don't expect but appreciate it", directly asking for it, hinting at it, etc etc etc? CLASSLESS and completely out of line and poor business face we should have 1, we have 2. I'll tip a bit for bad service in certain industries just because I know the employee is getting a crappy wage. Even if the management gets a note about the bad service. It's not good reinforcement. Hiring people should come with a "real" assessment for what an employee and job is worth - direct. Not indirect. 3? begging for it pretty much guarantees a zero and a complaint. ... 8. I'd still hold off on the 'they are manipulating the guy' theory until we find out the entire training sequence. If it's just those 3 clips, you have a point, but as I already noted, I suspect they ran a few more scenarios than just the scenarios in the video. And regardless, I still think the point made is a valid one. As for them providing more 'tools' - would you then be upset if the video showed the guy fumbling for 3 or 4 different things before being 'killed'? That would have made the point even more emphatically. ... 9. such a crap cliche - If we held everybody to a decent standard that we'd also expect from ourselves, then we'd have a better society. tell me, do you have a list of demographics of people to a "lower standard"? Would you be fine holding yourselves and those close to you to 'lower' standards? it's all relative. Which people are 'better' than others such that higher and lower standards make sense for society? maybe those better people should also get to make choices for those dirty lower people. etc etc etc (I know it's just a 'saying' that people use, but I wanted to make the point again) ... 10. If people truly believe that, then they should be arguing for the countries to take direct action against OPEC countries for unfair trade practices. Call me skeptical when the response is to rationalize increased taxation against the public. Even more suspicious when hyper taxing gas is a staple of the green movement even before the price came down. It's one of the end goals - this cycle is just convenient to push that agenda. For government it's just another money grab. Nothing more, nothing less. Any excuse will do. "OH NO - look at evil OPEC.... we'll show them, we'll increase taxes on our own citizens in an impotent attempt to link some oddball tangential market leverage theory that doesn't work over a bunch of nations that don't care. Oh - on a completely unrelated note, now we can subsidize more windfarms and bankrupt solar cell companies and all of Congress can take nice vacations." ... 11. Cadet Kirk - do you, of all people, deny the possibility of a no-win scenario? (I think you look at the scenarios and decide if they are reasonable possibilities. You'd still have to say yes. I suspect they did a lot of others with better results. They'd have to anyway to get the activists to achieve the proper level of comfort/complacency prior to surprising them with the scary ones. That would be a proper training method. Suspect that these were published on the video as they were the learning experience that some people deny. 13. Have a good weekend, Dek. (I was specifically talking about increased taxes used to artificially manipulate the market. Not so much about taxes used to pay for the minimal things necessary to run the government. That might clarify a bit. You know me, my default is money is better off in the hands of the citizens vs the government, and that the US is on the 'spend too much' side, very much, of the tax/spend pendulum today. YMMV in Canadia) ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  14. you note three separate things here 1 - I agree, responsible budgeting is a good idea 2 - increased allocations for an system designed to support a beaurocracy instead of teaching kids is a completely other topic. But it might apply when you are arguing to take away even more money from parents that just might use it for their kid's educations if they had a better option. 3 - artificially mucking with the market and prices is subject for debate (read as hijacking a private market as an excuse to take more money from the citizenry) let alone the fact that the attitudes inherent in the thinking that gives us the problems behind #2 and #3 is a big symptom of why we have to deal with a system that doesn't get the concept of #1 ...
