  1. You mean like Switzerland, where most of the populace has full-auto military machine guns in their homes, and yet, , they don't go around shooting each other every day? How could that be? It's all about the guns, right? And if guns are widespread, then people shoot each other a lot, right? But they don't seem to be doing that in Switzerland. So how does your theory account for this? Switzerland has a giant coverup conspiracy - the reality is that it's a big old shoot em up every other day - they just like it that way and don't want the rest of the world judging them ... 2. Using scripture with non-religious people like me is like talking to them in some different language - if fact, it's counterproductive to communication as quotes tend to turn people off and it gives the impression you don't have your own thoughts, rather just indoctrination. Using scripture with anti-religious types just reinforces their bias more. Preaching to a choir is like Obama talking to the mass media. It's pointless as they are already on your side. People making debate need to speak in the other side's terms to be understood. ... 3. I don't know.... At some point, it became fashionable for us to sit on our asses mindlessly surfing the 'net, posting in Internet forums about how we no longer sit on our asses mindlessly watching TV. Is being smug about not watching TV any different than skydivers that think they are such a 'special' group and better/smarter/more XtReMe than others just because of a common hobby? ... 4. I was hoping more for a sternly worded note of disapproval to be drafted. And, perhaps a request to the UN to also draft another sternly worded note of disappointment - with a threat that if the chicanery didn't stop, they'd possibly write another (after an appropriate meeting to discuss if another note should be written - with an addendum requiring the US to pay for the note writing process of course) Edit: typical cost for UN Note writing is approx - $82M ... 8. absolutely - and go ahead my point is simple A christian nation choosing to establish a secular government is something we never get to flesh out and it is a very good topic - especially today's context when the culture of the nation is now much diverged from that basis in the matter of religiosity whereas, christian theology vs atheistic theology is a dead horse here - however - soap box away - it keeps about 4 people entertained ... 9. I understand your point. Today - we have (for example) 50 choices, about 10 of them are actually usable, and the other 40 are not a good option for anyone. With gov health care - we'll have 51 choices, about 2 are doable, but one of those only for the rich, and the other 49 will die off eventually as completely impractical as the new policy will kill those options in the (not too) long term with penalties, and taxes, and additional controls added to them, and etc. But you are right, the choices are increased from 50 to 51. We go down this path, we'll have a crappy plan for everyone, and a supplemental plan for only the uber rich and politicians. But then, some pigs are more equal than others. ... 10. that was a very Lucky-like series of post responding. I find persistent preaching to be just as annoying as the smugness of the religiosity of the atheists. A good thread discussing the application of the founders desire to separate a secular government from a country of (originally) citizens of faith is interesting. thread drift into the same tired old for vs against religions is just a waste of bandwidth on a topic that's just beat to death here. atheism and religion are matters of faith - there is no proof by definition - so debating them is pointless - the most constructive attitude one can have about them is finding personal value in it regardless of one's position - or apathy - either way. So congratulations - all of you have made a personal decision on the matter and it works for you. Isn't that enough? Trying to convert each other, or even belittling the other's positions is just self gratification of the worst kind. ... 12. the really neat thing about this, is that people that passionately argue for cutting or increasing taxes have no interest at all in balancing the budget, so the point is really moot - they are just interested in political hay ... 13. absoutely - cut spending - you do that by cutting spending - obtuse increase income is more subtle right? - for governments it's not like household or business income in that the gov leaches from the people and doesn't actually create anything of profit - so increasing income could be triggered by either cutting taxes or increasing taxes, it depends on the current economy and business environment on which action "nets" more income - one thought on raising taxes, however, is it will always shrink the productivity of a country long term, so even when it temporarily increases income, the long term effect is damaging if it becomes regular policy - even though it may benefit many individuals by letting them keep their incumbency.... anyway - the easy lever is one to act on always first - cut spending and cut hard 2nd - look at the environment hard and cut or increase taxes as appropriate to improve the net bottom line - long term outlook is cutting today - our debt is huge - so that long term outlook to cut permanently is pretty far off - but temporary increases have to be balanced by occasional overall cuts as well as to not strangle the economy's potential for growth . . . . that, or just roll the dice and cut or increase as the voters ask and the economy doesn't really care either way I'm good with either theory ... 15. the concept of the "reluctant" leader was something much desired by the founders - take someone that's a success in their public life and they'd be cajoled to serve a term or two by the urging of the people of their districts. They'd rather be working their own businesses, but do the short term of public service because they feel a duty to. Then they pass the baton and return to their old jobs. ... Here's what BV wrote - "The people who support him almost religiously, and leap to his defense, are as foolish as the people who take great umbrage at what he says and endeavor to prove him "wrong." Door Dings

I have been doing that ever since, mostly to come back out and find a rusty, beaten up piece of junk right next to it... however, if some guy owns a super expensive car, and then parks kitty corner across 2 spaces in the spots right next to the front door, he shouldn't be surprised when a crappy piece of junk is squeezed into one of those spots 2 inches from the drivers side of his car......... used to see that all the time in DC - and the sports car guy bitching about 'how rude' the 2nd driver was ... Door Dings

too much angry, retaliatory, responses here. 1 - If your car owns you: one might park away from the crowded areas, or own something that doesn't drive you crazy if it's bumped 2 - this woman is completely rude - but asking for an apology or insurance info (and calling the cops if she doesn't) is about right - those answers are right on target - the others aren't about setting right a wrong, it's just about self gratification - two assholes don't make a decent person unfortunately so many frustrations out there.... it's hard not to just take it out on the next rude person it would help if the pissy PC metro planning areas would actually design parking lots with spaces of a decent size for at least a middle sized car.... but only if people would park in the spaces - I don't see why it's so hard to adjust the car if the job is crappy the first shot.... ...
