that's quite the tangent from the stated argument - he's not selling parts of someone else, he's selling parts of himself and the whole "you can DONATE, but you don't get to choose who it goes to" is also a non-starter to the point. what if you want to donate a kidney to your brother, or kids, or someone close - how is that different than selling it to anyone else you preference? As for any cash transaction associated with it - that's separate and private transaction separate from the "donation" ... that makes better sense - though it generates less outrage and indignation - so less fun I think the bailouts were very stupid and I wanted the market to handle it without government intervention - pretty much like anything else I see so......since we agree on that......then....have a nice day for the children ... If you found a bank bag full of money, would you return it to the bank?
rehmwa replied to JohnRich's topic in The Bonfire
That's what I was thinking Bank money are FDIC insured isn't it? So then they are just stealing from all of us, instead of a Bank? Stealing is stealing - but it's interesting to hear people rationalizing theft by pretending they are doing it out of some made up social conscience or karmic excuse......or at least under some kind of anonymity guise as an excuse if not that. I like Wendy - she's honest about it with the last caviat - pretty much, if in dire straights, then I'd be seriously tempted and can't really answer now. I get that.... ... This, except for the cop comment. I know plenty of trustworthy cops - probably a bigger percentage than skydivers or any other field in the same scenario. Though I wouldn't trust ANY organization of people - even one with a small percentage of creeps usually involves at least one creep will have access to the funds even if all the rest involved are trustworthy. So I'd just do it myself because I trust individuals, and I'm capable of being that individual to do the right thing - I don't need their help. ... the ratio is "zero" 100 hours of tunnel time rates as zero jumps however 1000 skydives rates as zero tunnel time These conversations always digress to those that don't like tunnels rationalizing their positions vs those that love tunnels rationalizing their positions. I really don't get why people even care about this. simple enough: If you don't like tunnels - don't go. But don't be upset when tunnel flyers learn a lot faster and get to do cooler stuff on their skydives. If you like tunnels, enjoy the skills boost - but don't think it gets you any more street cred except for the freefall portion - you still have learn all the other stuff - including the culture - at a normal learning curve. Enjoy the huge rig - tunnel flying does NOT give you credit to do anything (such as fly tiny rigs earlier than anyone else, or jumping a camera, or instructing, etc etc etc). ... U.S. Parachute Team ~ Any Funding Idea$ ?
rehmwa replied to airtwardo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
the response was about the "check this box to NOT" contribute. i.e., sneaky fundraising (don't give the US treasury any ideas please). I get your context, I just disagree - the bold part of his note should have been "not from my membership dues or lift tickets" That's the context I read it in - pretty much invoking the cost on the members regardless of the individual's position on it. However, if you want to compete, you actually should be ready to foot the bill 100%. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be great if people pitched in. But the choice should be up to the individual contributor. heck, we already pay for magazines that many of us don't want (sometimes multiple issues to the same household) In that, the discussion on marketing it is very good - how do we make people WANT to donate? I suspect leveraging USPA to sneak in any donation structure would be a great way to pretty much dry up voluntary donations. These are excellent athletes - looking to professional sports and how they market is a possible area of review. And always, the best way to fund a venture is to make it into money making ventures. Chuck is closer than we think - USPA should be actively looking for sponsors for these events and find ways to do that from big industries. That might net out positive. You all are right in that marketing this industry is pretty thin. ... U.S. Parachute Team ~ Any Funding Idea$ ?
rehmwa replied to airtwardo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
this a huge mis-representation of Anvil's position IMO You can NOT say he is opposed to providing support. He is opposed to not having the personal CHOICE to provide support. I also do NOT want a "donation" forced on me through dues or hidden increases in jump prices. - This is simply NOT a "donation" as there is no choice. You can't call it a "donation" - that's completely wrong. However, I have no problem with choosing to make a real donation personally and directly. - This is voluntary and is a real 'donation'. Nothing wrong with that at all. you want to encourage people to CHOOSE to donate: raffles, marketing, fundraisers, training camps, gear sales, etc are all great ideas. Ideas on how contributions can be forced out of the membership - horrible ideas. ... It's totally different, but..... I know if I actually drive the speed limit (especially in town on roads that no one drives the speed limit) - I pretty much always get tailgated. Everyone is in the habit of going 5-10 MPH over on all the roads. I'd think it would suck driving any kind of car that looks like a cop car - everyone slows down to the posted and you are always stuck behind them. It would be neat if a police cruiser was like a taxi and they could flip a sign from "on duty" to "off duty" whenever they just feel like driving home at the end of the day and you want to let the other drivers know they can drive "normal" instead of "anti-ticket". ... you're a bit serious on this bit - I'll leave you to it and find others to play with. it's a bit confusing, but I don't think it's about "good" and "bad" - just that vaguely argued definition of 'hypocrisy' I think their (not mine) argument is even simpler: Democrats are not hypocrits because they refuse to stand for anything - therefore all actions can be rationalized. or something like that - it's gets a bit muddled in my head when they try to put the D's and R's into big stereotyped buckets rather than assess the politician's actual actions regardless of party. ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luddite Good article - see how silly it is when written this way... The Luddites were a social movement of 19th-century English textile artisans who protested – often by destroying artifically imposed wage increases based on no corresponding need for improved skill sets - such a better weaving equipment – against the changes imposed on the free market by an ignorant government law, which they felt were leaving them without work and changing their way of life. ...
