what an odd post "pro-gunners" want to have the right to choose for themselves on the topic and respect the right of others to choice the same or differently. The anti-gunners want the right to make choices about the topic for other people. They also respect the right of others - as long as they agree with them. I guess you are a pro-gunner ... that's nuts (and the position is probably provided by that very University who has a vested interest in keeping their price high by any means possible) - subsidizing anything drives the price UP. Out of control tuition is a direct result of TOO MUCH subsidizing by state and fed gov'ment ... +++++ (if the inside guy does it right, we can even ensure that a good exit from the student is rewarded by keeping the heading and the student gets to see the airplane after exit - that does a bit for an aware student to keep their chin up - that visual of the plan is a pretty sight for the student the first time) that said, I had a learning curve my first few jumps on the inside slot (our most experienced guy gave me a couple hints that fixed it - we're always learning). And, on the other side of the dive, I've had to push the inside guy back onto the hill a lot more times than I'm happy to admit. Nothing sucks worse that seeing a really good student launch and then the exit not showing him that because one of us didn't do it perfect - the student deserves the reward for doing his job) ... "Life without parole" can be just as vengeful (or even more so) than the death penalty. "Throw him in a hole," sounds vengeful to me. The decision for either one needs to be a rational, unemotional decision. Any conviction/punishment needs to be. absolutely - i don't want them to suffer, I just want to clinically remove the threat so no other innocent in destroyed by a known predator ... that kind of post doesn't help the cause for support of reasoned capital punishment - this is exactly why people claim that CP is revenge, rather than a reasoned action with the intent to protect the weak from the predators the decision to execute a criminal needs to be unemotional, thought out completely, reluctant - for the sole purpose of permanently removing a known threat to all law abiding citizens, without even the remote possibility of repeat offenses that any kind on incarceration may allow (as noted in the thread - life without parole can be legislated by each state... so can reversing a law allowing life without parole) ... It doesn't. The political slant is just about as ridiculous as blaming the LWL's (left wing liberals) for Safeway having a non-interference policy. (the clerk should have smiled at the attacker and explained gently how societal pressure has forced the attacker to be an abuser and that a few more government programs would fix him up just fine. Clearly the attacker was incorrectly raised by his village and required understanding and perhaps a health care plan. or perhaps, the attacker and his girlfriend were just trying to abort the viable life mass - which is her option) Disclaimer - this post is intended for wry and cynical reading - not the opinions of the author - only intended to highlight the weird political vitriol level of a typical funjumper post in a teasing and mocking fashion - do not swim for 30 minutes after reading this post - if derision continues for more than 4 hours after reading this post seek medical assistance - your mileage may vary depending upon road conditions - ... I agree with that comment - the issue is your 'weak' are the mentally ill and violent. And my 'weak' are the victims of yours. Psychological disease is not something you chose. as for this implied strawman....... the point is we can make a generalized argument that the village has little to do with whether these guys end up with their disease or not - it hits the individual. So blaming the 'village' for one man's acts is inherently unfair unless there was a preponderance of people from that village that exhibit that behavior. This is akin to saying all black urban youths will commit crimes. it's another example of just putting people in generalized buckets. I won't buy that. sometimes, an individual just turns out poorly whether the parents, the school and the community might still have done everything right....... ... that's an odd tangent - we're clearly missing each other's point - you seem to consider the concept of "the village" as something that should be legalized and turned into a formal contract (example - the murderer's parents and neighbors should be held responsible for his adult acts also...???). Whereas, I just see people growing up and interacting as "life" and it shouldn't be forced into something deeper than that just to progress a specific socio/politico agenda you can strawman and misread me all you like, but it's pretty much that simple however, what you propose is pretty socially intrusive into people's lives - I'm sure the evangelical right wing types will love it ... that's a good point that gets lost often because of the below here - understanding = understanding (even when we trying to understand a wrong and heinous act) understanding DOES NOT = acceptance or approval Just because I understand why someone would commit a specific act doesn't automatically imply that I have to now approve of the act. I can sympathize with a murderer's motivation, but I would still vote guilty. I'm not sure how many people can get that. Especially those that like to throw out emotional scenarios to generalized debate topics that start with "how would you feel if it were someone close to you" etc etc etc. ... tough one - I'd say up to a point, but when the individual crosses a line, then the primary responsibility overwhelmingly turns to protecting those citizens that haven't done anything wrong. The actions of that individual will always trump over the rationalizations he can present. At least in a society that's intended to lift up the individual rather than oppress them for the sake of the commune Of each of your people convicted of heinous crimes with serious psych issues - how many people are out there that had very similar upbringings that chose NOT to commit the same heinous crimes? I doubt the "village" concept is super valid (I don't like the idea of people butting into the upbringing of someone else's kids), but that's just an opinion. Actually, I just can't stand the idea of the "village" and what it would ultimately represent ... Groundskeeper Fired After Turning In Gun He Found
rehmwa replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
even so, if even one of the votes was serious (I can't imagine how), it would be interesting to hear the logic (mainly because I can't imagine how). Apparently someone in the food chain in the Detroit city government took it seriously enough to fire the guy, so someone else could possibly vote that way. (It's probably something stupid though - the Groundskeeper might just have been a crappy employee and this was the only way to manufacture a reason to release him that could stand up to the public union or, the story is incomplete and they left out the part where the employee jokingly pointed it at park patrons, or fired a couple shots, etc etc etc) (unless it's from DreamDancer or one of his proxies, then I just don't care) ... now this is a new form of judgmentalism we haven't seen - should be fun to stretch it out So the adoptee has abandonment issues and goes on a killing spree at the age of 35 - .... so we find the birth mother and put her in jail too? the adopted parents too for not alleviating that stress? what we need is suspended animation - then we can freeze them and store them like cord wood - no food, no board, just storage fees until an equivalent lifetime period is served - then they can be ground up for plant fertilizer then if it turns out they truly were given a false verdict prior to that date, re-animate them and they can rejoin society at the same age as they were when frozen ... as the thread goes on "death penalty is revenge" "makes hannibals of us all" "put them all in the same cell" It's not even a page and the emotional arguments are starting to poke their noses out. Davjohns - it's really a matter of perspective. You can try to have the practical and cost vs potential future threat debate, but the problem is that once a person has decided it's a visceral discussion rather than logical, then it's turns from a debate to an argument which then becomes a battle to 'win' the argument. In other words, no one invested in the emotional argument can acknowledge that other people might just have a true practical position to discuss. You'll get a small show of attempts (a couple of them will be honest) the rest are for show before the same old thread just appears and takes control. If you push it too far, then the name calling will commence. Easier to just skip right to it. USPA Poll on AFF Instructor Requirement
rehmwa replied to catfishhunter's topic in Safety and Training
I think serious tunnel training is a great way to increase many of the skills (any of the in tight flying and lurking) needed for AFF. (but not to replace any) From what I've seen, I'd like to see the requirements increased from the current baseline as it is for just regular jumping and coaching. Frankly, I'd prefer to see the jump numbers and experience requirements increased AND a certain amount of focused/coached tunnel time added to that increase. (that should get me a little bit of flak) However, demonstration of abilities directly to the course evaluator is still better than any pre-reqs. And I'd give a lot more respect to a personal recommendation/endorsement by a respected local instructor to the course evaluator over some unknown person showing up with a logbook regardless of the relative numbers of years or jumps between the two. ...
