  1. Bullshit, if you don't understand it, ask for a clarification. You advocate forcing the kids to think to your subjective standards. I'm advocating that they can think for themselves once they are adults and that we've matured over the last few decades that the same old crap doesn't apply like it used to. I try to be lighthearted about it because I assume you're being devil's advocate about the viewpoint. But you just want to play SC crap here. I'm not playing that. If you want to call as "wild irreverance" then we have nothing to talk about. Having the next generation better than the last shouldn't be a threat, it should be a fantastic thing if you're strong enough to handle it. You people want to fix yourselves, and you can't do that, so you're trying to fix the next generation which isn't broken in that way. ... 2. I love that tactic. Sure, if that's what you want to think, go for it. You take yourself so serious, Kelpy. BV's response was a decent one, though better if he'd have just noted the anecdote for a school today - he and Wendy are as old as me. You're really just advocating for a cause. It was a great cause, but the question on the table is whether it's still one in today's world. I'd contend it's not and people trying to keep it alive are likely causing more harm than good. Watch the kids today, they don't think like they used to. They have their act together much better on these matters. I'd like to trust them. Treat them well and let them lead the way. You know, show them all the beauty they possess inside. Maybe give them a sense of something....something they can be proud of. etc etc ... 5. meh - I suspect the situation in the job market is already pretty apparent for those that really care to do their homework. by the 8-10 year olds? They all want to be astronomers and firemen and reporters. Maybe super heroes these days. By the time kids even begin to think about these things (and it's difficult to do too far ahead in technology due to changing trends) it's too late. If you want to do engineering or physics at a serious school, you better be on track to finish 1st year calculus (both semesters, not just the 1st) in high school, or you're going to suffer a bit in year 1 at college. (or more likely, not be admitted) Short of compressing years together, that means algebra in junior high. wow - I had no idea that grade schools and high schools had different curriculums for their students by gender....shows you learn something every day here clearly we need to force the girls to pretend to be astronauts and firemen at least 3 days per week until they think right ... 7. meh - I suspect the situation in the job market is already pretty apparent for those that really care to do their homework. I'm also wondering, do we have similar, pointless, PR programs to attract men to typically female dominated roles? or is this just a one sided gender bias discussion? ... 9. Silly - 1 - Everyone, NO exceptions that wants Voter ID absolutely wants to disenfranchise every single person that's over 50 or makes less than $250K/year. It's a solid step towards towards corporate ownership of the country. the final goal is for only CEO's to have block vote rights for citizens that live near them (based upon Walmart territorial boundaries). 2 - Everyone, ABSOLUTELY NO exceptions, that is opposed to Voter ID absolutely wants the voting process to be overrun by illegals and foreign interests intent upon bankrupting the country and creating a socialist hell on earth. The end game is as follows: every non-citizen gets two votes. One to cancel a specific citizen's vote - the other to vote just for pain and misery. Final results would be two elections - one for citizens that is ignored, then the real one for non-citizens that decide the results. There is not a single person in the WORLD that just wants to ensure only legal US citizens vote and no one else. That's just silly. ... 10. oh, I see what you're doing - it's a bit of a non sequitor with the context I was on. suspect you're debating something I wasn't even referring to. (edit: In fact, your point was acknowledged, I think, back in an earlier rushmc statement, but it wasn't really pertinent to the basic discussion, so you're not really debating anyone with it.) we're walking down two completely different sidewalks here I'll see you at the corner later ... 18. Varies by DZ - ask around. However, I'd try to be objective and decide what you consider to be the best retrain for you. (rather than just pick the DZ that's asking for the least effort). Once you go back to the retrain think about this: retrains are tricky, some people just pick it back up, others (funny....it seems like those that act like they still know it all) can be worse than rookies. No matter what you are being asked to do, it's great to bring up your experience once at the beginning, and then spend the rest of the time listening to the instructors and taking the drills and training seriously. They won't forget you jumped before. But your performance in the preps will mean more to them than those few jumps you made 6 years ago. and you just don't know which student you'll be until you hit the air again, no matter how good or bad you were before edit: I did a retrain about 10 years after almost a 5 year layoff, been there on both sides - as the guy teaching and the guy retraining - FWIW ... 19. It's not the government's role to tell parents how to parent. Even though I agree with you, it's not my business to force that on other parents. Frankly, I wonder if this is such a huge deal today or if a lot of people are just hanging on to their personal recollections from decades ago rather than looking at today's kids...... My daughter wanted dolls. So we let her play with them. She also like to build stuff, so we had toys that did that too. All we did was to try to encourage what she liked, and make sure she also had discipline and was respectful of others. She's talented enough that were are lucky that she can choose art, medicine, engineering, and just about anything else she'd like. I don't think anything is off the table and she has nothing to prove. I want her to pick the field she wants to pursue, rather than pick something just to spite an outdated cultural norm that really doesn't exist so much in her generation. (Which I think actually is being impressed upon kids and young women - too much interference is driving just a different form of bias rather than eliminating bias in general - I find that sad). I think most parents are similar. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  20. this is the right answer if a group is out because of quotas - that's simply wrong, despite whatever results happen if a group is out because the other groups qualifies at a higher level - then that is just fine frankly, splitting up the metrics based on groups in any way is an insult to each of those INDIVIDUALS that worked their butts off to get in ... 21. I wonder what 'flaws' you think exist. And whatever you 'fix', even then, 'making' someone do something they don't want to do is still wrong. I think the mentality that forcing certain subjective parities just based on a handful of people's opinions is goofy. I'd just say let the kids pick the majors they want and let the government only have one purpose - to not allow institutions to establish bias. This is much preferable to the alternative where the government just replaces one set of biases with their own biases (or yours, or mine). ... 22. interesting tip. I don't see the necessity, but, every student is different though I have a standard course, I try teach to what the student(s) needs, not just the standard course.
