  1. Oh I think that taxation driving up costs for the consumer has played a part as well. As has increased health insurance premiums. I agree that these might all have some small part. I also suspect, that even without regulation and commercials and taxes, that people are just a lot more educated in general and smarter than they used to be. And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how stupid and smelly and idiotic smoking is. I suspect the generations are just getting smarter and more kids just make the better decisions. Even our hard core smokers are moving to the vapor cigs at the DZ. Those are good inventions in response to smarter people creating a new demand. ... 3. ok, on the sarcasm meter, that was just funny. I don't care if you are pro or anti gun and private property ownership. You have to admit, that's just funny. ... 4. not for everybody, I've retrained both (though 'most' do tend to just take it back pretty quickly). The ones with the "hey, I already know it all attitude" actually tended to be the most of a PAIN to train and the sloppiest in the air. how about that? ... 5. thanks, I'd do the same thing (wrap the other line to balance, and then fly rears) even if I had my knife - as long as it's not TOO many wraps to balance. That could seriously mess with the riser flare. Also, Dave's note on cutting lines applies, especially for smaller canopies. ... 9. looked like a pretty clear cry of racist to me YMMV but why "How the hell" you don't see that even a little bit? .... YMMV (your outrage is fine, but the written word is goofy. maybe Bill will clarify, and then I'll withdraw the note. but it seemed pretty clear on my read) I clarified the read in my post if that helps you understand why I took it that way. BTW - I like the little pockets when they improve the neighborhood and give us places to go to experience that positively. I don't like the pockets when they run down the neighborhood. Either can happen. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  10. That's a pretty blatant PA from a moderator. Even for you. How do you know which part was the nightmare? - was it just the part about the area being rundown and the old man not getting any help from his neighbors? or the part about the community's culture being changed? it's a pretty high horse to just assume the second one - again, even for you at least asking "which part are you talking about?" is a less of an inference to calling out 'RACISM' on the guy ... 11. WTF? Why was a parent taking their 3mo old to a midnight showing of a movie? That infant should have been home in their crib! seriously (and this was even later, I heard it was a 2nd or 3rd run) For that matter - why take a 3 month old to a Batman movie in the first place? regardless of time of day ... 13. absolutely that's what it looks like - he only seemed to blame the packers for the loop coming unstowed, not for his poor grab It's why when I leave my rig with a packer, I generally leave it with the toggles and the excess already stowed, the way I like it. Lessens the chance of it not being the way I like it when it opens. For that matter, I know a few (few) jumpers that don't even stow the excess. Yet they don't seem to reach through and create fun and exciting knots. ... 14. Our radios are small enough (like a pack of cards), that I think some could be mounted right inside the shell of a ProTec. Seems even there, that would be a small modification anyway to slot them in. Or, for those rich DZO's () - buy them built with a cavity just for the radio. If one had enough radios to do that on all the helmets (with an easy way to recharge without disassembly) - that would be ideal. Wishes and dreams..... ... 16. Just for learning - How many here comfy with landing it - would cut the steering lines (if they had a hook knife - I do on one rig). I would. Then it's easier to fly on rears without having to balance out the bound side. If not - how many would just fly compensated (crooked hands, crooked flare) - vs taking a wrap or two on the unaffected side and then flying on rears (knowing that the steering lines are slightly short now). I think I'd opt for the wrap, but I want to think on it. Hopefully all high enough to take some practice turns and flares.... 1st option - cut the lines and land on rears 2nd option (no knife) - balance the steering lines and land on rears 3rd option (no knife) - just fly crooked hands caviat - if any of these don't pass the in flight test (turn turn flare), cutaway of course that little short steering line extension is cheap and quick to replace ... 18. 1 - Nice note, Dave, as always ^ (I'd even say that's a better presentation for people with thousands of jumps too - allows open discussion etc etc) 2 - note the OP did also sorta mea culpa ("I guess I shouldn't judge this harshly if I wasn't the guy under canopy etc. easy to couch jump I guess") to the knee jerk judgment finally - with that, I'd probably stop busting him on it 3 - as for the swooping and jumping that size Crossfire at 150 jumps? I'd keep busting him for a bit - it's still worth it to save a decent new jumper from hurting himself Edit: watched the vid - I think the kid did a fine job. Personally, I'd have landed it, but the cutaway is absolutely a valid choice. Personally, I eyeball my toggle grab specifically and watch to avoid that mistake in grab (picking up the toggle through the excess line). Frankly, that scenario was highlighted in Parachutist exactly just a few months ago. (I hate to admit getting something good from the magazine, it hurts a bit ). The stow method on my Mirage does not preclude this scenario but does make it rather unlikely, the method I use on my Odyssey does - there's a few dozen ways to stow excess steering line (without velcro please), a good rigger can advise some of the better ways. ... 19. with the current guy, apparently we can't but to my comment, the process still shouldn't rely on party hatchetmen to do that job it's kind of sick how the legal system is set up. Instead of objectivity and process, we have a system where one side gets to have an advocate grossly biased towards prosecution, squared off against an advocate grossly biased towards defense and let them battle it out. ... 23. In general, for products from the major guys, I've had very good service. Lead times can be quite long for some items, but that's not poor service unless the manufacturer is late to the stated commitment. Most all are very honest if lead times are long. I've had a couple vendors with poor service, but not nearly as many as I've gotten good service. Only one vendor did I get terrible service - the product I ordered took over 12 months to arrive (vs advertised 4-6 weeks delivery), and not a single response was sent regarding about 10 notes and phone calls over the period from 6 months to 12. There's no real good excuse for not answering your mail. This vendor has a great product, though IMHO. edit: deleted one statement that I'm not able to really state for sure ... 24. analogies are fun - You're in a boat that's filling up with water and sinking due to a hole. Keynesian spending is like adding a bigger hole and calling it a drain - in an attempt to save the boat. alternatively for you taxing advocates - Reducing taxes is like punching a whole bunch of holes in the boat because the only tool you have is a spike. My economic philosophy leans to the first one, but, either way - analogies are fun ... 25. Gone. Success is a bad word now. STRAWMAN. not really - Lawrocket is pretty on about how the psychology is being established - I don't think it's on purpose though, this is actually how a LOT of people really think, that there is no such thing as personal property or success based on effort and abilities so it's less of at setup, rather, it's just them putting out their deeply felt philosophy of "what's yours, isn't really yours, it is mine" someone will give the grey area discussion right on cue soon (the "actually, there are examples that show exactly that government really DOES own everything") - perhaps with an 'eminent domain' gambit or so ...
