  1. Try it, keep records. Don't do it, keep records. compare and decide for yourself. It works VERY well for me and most. YMMV ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  2. Like I thought, we have different ideas about being polite. well, it was polite right AFTER he: - threw the first punch - with a metal object and before - continuing to "beat the shit" out of the cowboy (implies he continued to throw punches even after the fight was done) the asshole probably was just trying to impress the hot girl in the bar. You know, the one that had 'most' of her teeth. ... 3. I'd revise that to " and a very basic and specific set of laws in each state in the country should be pretty uniform". And we're in agreement and fitting the real intent. This really comes down to the extent of those laws that need to be uniform and where to draw the line. Basic human rights, but not really anything beyond that - IMO. The states can handle ALL the subjective stuff. As designed. This still aligns to position 1, but your caviat is good clarification. The states absolutely should not be forced into carbon copies of each other. And it's funny that serious laws (example: like Murder) are left up to each state to try in court. Now defining that grey line between - 'real stuff' and 'subjective stuff' is always the tough debate. ... 4. nope it's nationalist, but the intent is a perfect analogy to racist and would fit in that category in most people's minds kinda like saying insults to all Christians or Muslims is racist. it's not, it's 'religionist' (~) - but the intent is the same and no one would flinch at it I'd call of them equivalent in terms of bad taste and a waste of time. ... 5. He's a useful distraction at best. But the election really isn't about Biden. Barack looks healthy enough to survive 4 more if he repeats. Seems that Biden as VP is an excellent anti-assassination technique for the president ... 6. Not really. Acknowledging that laws vary by jurisdiction (be it local, state, or national) is not the same as advocating states' rights. Like Hamilton and the Federalists, I believe states' rights should be limited, and the states should be subordinate to the federal government. then we have two philosophies: example: Say that you like the laws and policies in New York, and hate the laws and policies in New Jersey. Others might agree with you or not, but that's what you think. One position advocates that people should have the ability to freely choose to move from NJ to NY until NJ decides to try some of the things that NY is doing. or vice versa.... or even those inclined just end up in the best state for their views. The other position think that the feds should just force NJ to be like NY, and what the hell - let's just adjust the other 48 while we're at it.... seems one allows choice, the other is a bit bossy and intrusive. but that's just me Edit: This is the point where Quade brings up the slavery non sequitor. again ... 7. It's sad that the first reaction by the father was to attack the driver from the ACCIDENT rather than try to take care of his little girl tragedy for the little girl and her family, but the driver had the right to protect himself from attack - if the father had not been killed, he should have gone to jail - grief (or more likely, being idiotically temperamental) is not a justification for assault or attempted murder the fact that the driver was a cop is completely moot (only from reading the article) ... 10. Ahh, this is consistent with a strong state's rights position (gasp) and a key consideration of the original founders. (50 political experiments with no federal intervention and people choosing with their feet which is best by moving to those states they like best until the slackers respond to maintain their population) Now which political philosophies wants to protect the sovereignty of the states and which want to just condense all government to the national level??? (I'm just being wry - actually the thread is moving along pretty nicely) ... 11. I hate that damn thing. Arch, relax, reach, pull (the 'relax', or 'breathe', or 'pause' is plenty of time to get away even for the most nervous of students. If they are that nervous, they'll quick-pitch regardless) giving a random delay of any kind is pointless and doesn't add to the training - IMHO, YMMV (I'm sure someone will V) it's a clear and pull, not a clear and wait and pull ... 12. if we teach it right (i.e., the student isn't scared to dive steep enough to hit the wind correctly), a dive exit is also stable from the start - or sideways or poised, etc etc....... orientation doesn't matter as long as our junk is square to the wind damn straight ... 14. though likely true for you, how many others will also claim this also? (Actually, if I get that creepy feeling someone might just be above me, I don't roll, I just check over the shoulder a little longer than my normal and really exaggerate the wave off. I really wonder just how big a blind spot from a traditional airspace check there is. Seems that we can see quite a lot unless we have neck issues.) ... 15. Backtrack away at the end of the relative portion of the dive to keep the fall rate transition more gradual (avoids corking). Roll to belly during the back track and finish on a normal track. No one has ever said to me barrel roll at the end of the track, just back track on breakoff. (Now I'm hearing mixed discussions from newer and more experienced jumps - but not the pure belly folks, just the FFers and those that do both) the back track is for safety at breakoff, not for fun, really. or so I've been taught. Would be nice to have some of the more experienced FF'ers confirm or deny this here. ... 16. this topic comes up more and more. Is it because we back track away from head down dives at the BEGINNING of the breakoff? (and thus people think it's appropriate at the end when everyone should be doing a normal track by then.....) - serious question. I'm hearing more and more people talk about clearing with a barrel roll. I, personally, don't think it's a good idea 99% of the time. Seems that the evolution of the sport continues to generate a lot of good new ideas and some bad ideas at the same time. Here's a place where experienced jumpers can train this ahead of time and touch on during safety day briefings. ... 22. Opinion? Ryan is intended to pull in the fiscal tea party (the original intent, not the hijackers) and hold them. Not much, but guaranteeing them is a predictable move. they already have the social conservatives no matter what, they are as fanatical as the social libs. So Mitt needs a position to appeal to the social center. This helps. Now Mitt can be a bit more aggressive in the expected move to center for the general election. Maybe even try to appeal to some social centrist positions. (short answer, Ryan aboard will mitigate the voter impact of the fiscal hawks, allowing Mitt to floats talk about some spendings to appeal to the less fiscally responsible voters that want their cut for the vote) will it work? I dunno. but it's a strategy as good as many watch the speeches, Mitt will talk about 'helping' those struggling, etc etc etc, while simultaneously, Ryan will stay on mission about budgets and cutting spending. Obama will try to buy votes as usual (high visibility), Biden will try to not do maximum damage in any speech (minimize visibility) - SOP for the left, now to be balanced (attempt) by Mitt. So the fiscal swing vote is whats in play now. I find it sad that the real message we need (spending control) will be relegated to focus from a VP candidate to contain a demographic that politicians just don't want to give attention to. Nothing new here - another boring social battle over who gets to overspend on their favorite impotent and bankrupting issues. ... 24. I'm liking this. After graduation, we have them do a few solos to get more comfy, then they go work on the card. You're comment would provide essentially free practice really for the H&P during any/some of those jumps. (Arch, relax, reach, touch - no counting, no pressure, just practice the real thing) I'd certainly like to see more consistent success on H&Ps and I'll suggest this as something to add to our normal procedures. I shamed I didn't think of it myself, I started SL years ago and it's an obvious carryover that we could have retained into AFF. (I think the main argument would be something like - 'what? add something else to their overloaded brains? what the hell are you thinking? but maybe not) FWIW - I don't like counting seconds for an H&P (side note), I teach a calm clear 'then' pull as above. ...
