Well that would explain why so many people around here bang on about 'good guys and bad guys'. the other option for Speaker's Corner is that's just the amount of time people are willing to put into a post for a bunch of strangers ... How do you decide what is a fact? Does it make you feel warm and fuzzy and matches all your pre-conceived notions about people you've never met in person? That's a good start. Seems to work here. ... that's a non-point - those people are already victims. Whatever justice is decided (execution or lifetime imprisonment, etc) is about protecting all of society, not just a handful of individuals from any further crimes. making the victims "feel better" is just a side effect at best - if they were the focus, then it's not justice, it would be revenge - a totally different concept. ... As a cynical/skeptical agnostic type,,,, I just have to say that those damn Christians, just rubbing it in our faces and forcing us to go to....well.......no where in particular. But, forcing me to believe,....well...nothing really in particular..... Why, just Sunday, my neighbors (admittedly way too 'churchy' for my tastes) actually had the nerve to give us a little packet of M&M's with a card on it saying "Happy Easter". the NERVE of some people. How incredibly rude. I might just not eat that candy. I just might not....... too late (Of course, the atheists are much nicer, one guy I know enjoys making public zombie Jesus Easter jokes to anyone of faith he knows and then sniggering to himself and calling them stupid to their faces) giving candy to neighbors and wishing them a nice day vs calling others stupid and insulting their privately held beliefs in public places - they are the exact same thing!!! ... "Explain why?" because government subsidies are wasteful and unfairly prop up work that live on its own. then they are too entrenched to give it up in a smart fashion. Did you even try to understand Skypuppy's note? Your note indicates a binary stereotype (with a politically correct twist for the fun of it) look at the issue - oil vs other (with no option to actually try to understand the comment.) Instead of trying to advocate one type of subsidy and attacking another less PC, his comment was overall. Skypuppy notes that subsidies are a bad idea. Clearly this would apply to any type of subsidy (or penalty) on oil as well. So you are in complete agreement with skypuppy and just like to write in a manner that looks like argument. ?? so what - it works that way in private industry too. So take away the crutches and let the private industry get through the development process. (Same as you propose for oil - everyone agrees) ... That's not stupidity, that's laziness. There's a lot of smart people here that do that (from both directions). If it's not laziness, then it's just purposefully obtuse and antagonistic. ... The assumption that the only solution is a legal one is really interesting. The assumption people should find illegal solutions to problems is also interesting. being deliberately obtuse doesn't make you sound smart at all - adding law after ineffective law after ineffective law is not the fix all to everything - even if in your mind the only way to fix a problem is through a liberal congress instead of good people learning to be safe and responsible and to watch out for each other OH NO! my hands are cold - Congress better pass a law! ... I'm having a hard time taking any message from you here other than you want the government to continue spending on failed efforts...... It's pretty easy to say "those dummies, such terrible short term thinking here - keep spending" they have smart people too. Large capital investments like this can pay off, since the alternative status quo is usually a hodgepodge of smaller solutions that don't scale or intercommunicate. But poorly defined projects fail. Large poorly defined projects fail spectacularly. I agree - and, in the spirit of good planning - during reassessment, you have to do the regular cost/benefit analysis. The toughest thing to do is to cancel a project when it flips to unproductive. ESPECIALLY in government when letting it continue will help keep your budget dollars coming. short answer - yes, they "can" pay off. but it's not guaranteed. good for them if they cancelled upon realizing it wouldn't pay off. in government, we seem to see a lot of throwing good money after bad - this is refreshing to see something canceled. because people recognize that population control infringes on everybody's rights gun control does too, but half the people don't know it - it also allows politicians to create a scary boogieman out of normal citizens so the others can feel self righteous and attack them - this distracts the public so the politicians can go do fun stuff with companies like Solyndra and Monsanto. mmmm- distractions..... mmmmm- soylent ... Yeah. I think it's great to talk about how people "should" act. I want a society of nicer and more sharing people too. IMHO, that's a cultural thing, not something that just new laws or the like will fix - or even affect in the right direction. I think the philosophy of forcing it on others so some can get the benefit has actually made it worse on both groups - significantly - resulting is a society much worse as a result, not better. YMMV ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

I like that. But prefer the turn "return on investment" over "social contract". If you are not a donor, you are on the bottom half of the list behind those that are. But ahead of total assholes, public smokers, people that run red lights and stop signs, soccer fans, and style and accuracy fanatics (both of them).. (i've been picking on packers and CrW dogs too much lately so thought I'd switch it up) and, seriously, direct family goes to the top of the list no matter what ...
