DSE, it sounds like you are in favor of the Century lens vs the Raynox. When looking at your lens comparison it looks to me that the Raynox might have better resolution. The Century is obviously lower profile which I like but more expensive which of course I don't like. Will we notice much diference in the image between the two. And would you please tells us definitively which lens you would recommend and why? And where we might find the best prices. I'm talking .5 range for tandems only. And thanks for allowing us to pick your brains. You obvioulsy have VASST knowledge in this area. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

Hey Jimmy we just got back from a trip to the Denver tunnel. You should have come with. It was a great time. 19 hours of total flying time in less than two days. Yahoo Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

I had the privlege of organizing at Z-Hills for several years with Jerry Bird as the head organizer. Jerry taught me a lot about organizing and getting the best out of people. All on a 25 minute call. I also helped organize a "Horny Gorilla" and we invited Jerry. If my memory serves me I think it was his birthday. It was when Hooper still had the DZ by the golf course. Jerry told us it was his first "Horny Gorilla" and he didn't really care for it. To this day I'm not sure I believe it was his first HG, because I figured he'd already done everything possible. But I definetly believe he didn't like it. He was across from me and I saw the look on his face. He was not having fun. Jerry deserves all the kudos people can give him. He may not have started RW but he certainly led the charge for as long as he was in the air. Who ever sees him next, give him a pat on the back for all he's done for our sport. Don't over look Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, IL. It's arguably the best DZ in the world. Unbeleivable facilities. Just go to SkydiveChicago.com Have fun. it will change your life forever. And, yes, get the video. You'll regret it if you don't. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be. -
What edition of Vegas do you recommend? And what minimum stuff do you need on a laptop? In other words speed of processor etc, anything that a guy should look for when buying a laptop? I really apreciate your help Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

I'm in the process of moving from linear to non-linear editing so I'm a bit new at this. So if I'm using your templates, how long does it take to edit a tandem video. From the time I put my card in the computer till I'm able to hand a finished DVD to the customer? Let's say a 10 minute DVD. And during this time is there any time I can walk away from the process, such as rendering or burning the disc? I shoot and edit my own videos. Also which editing software do you recommend and why? And is there any difference in using a Laptop/PC vs an Apple Macbook Pro? Pros and cons? I know these are a lot of questions but I want to get it right. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

Tell me please about the above reference. I did a search for "Tandem Videos Made Easy" but could not find anything. I remember some time back reading DSE saying he was coming out with some tutorial or even software to manage the work flow of tandem editing. Is that what you mean? Or has he even done that yet? I am trying to transition to editing via a computer instead of a board. I really need help. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

Can you tell us how long it would take to convert 10 minutes of footage when loading to a Macbook Pro? And will it play nicely with I Movie? Also will I be able to use my low profile .5 Royal lens. If so will the image suffer? Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

Want a similar canopy to Vengeance. No Airlocks!
Skydivesg replied to halorob's topic in Gear and Rigging
I have about 1000 jumps on two different Samurai 136s and 400 on the Katana. The Katana is a much more aggresive canopy with a much longer recovery arc. I have no problems with the airlocks on the Samurai. I think the smaller canopy has less touble than the larger ones. I'll be selling my Samurai soon. I like the canopy but I just like the Katana more. It does take more concentration to land than the Samurai Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be. -
Yeah, I talk to Sherry pretty regularly (she lives here in Des Moines). She said that Norm is very particular about how his suits fit, especially how his wings fit. She's a really cool person and is quite concerned with the quality of everything that goes out the door. She's asked me to help her develop a 4 way suit. We've got some great ideas. I think she will have an awesome 4 way suit to offer soon. But I know most of you who read this thread aren't too interested in that. Anything she builds will be high quality. Sherry from FireFly makes some awesome camera suits. She makes any kind of connector you want. I like the wrap around kind that just wraps under your leg strap hardware and then uses a snap shackle that snaps onto a ring that she has at the base of the wing. I have a camera jacket and use it with free fly pants. Or sometimes I use it with shorts. It just depends on the needs for the jump. I've even had to do a back to back load at a 4 way league meet once. After I landed from a jump with my team (with me as a player not a video guy), I slipped my jacket on over my 4 way suit and went up and shot video for another team. I'm pretty sure Norm Kent jumps her suits. There is no better quality. Hit me back if you want more info. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

According to bomb 420 "it's smaller than the PC1000". Does that mean that it will fit in the 2K FF2 made for the PC series cameras? Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

What canopy are you jumping and what's the wing loading? How far did you pull the toggles and how long did you keep them there? Did you look up at the canopy during the deep brake flight? If so what did the canopy look like? I hope you are doing all this well above 2000 feet. That should be your had deck for this kind of flight manuevering. Why can't I pull my front risers?
Skydivesg replied to GPSJane's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I onced watched Jim Hotze almost die on a reasonably calm day in Eloy as he was lanidng his Nova. He didn't take his gear off. He walked straight into manifest asked for a pair of scissors and cut the lines off the canopy and threw it in the garbage. I hope you burned your Nova. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be. -
Paul, the mini risers are pretty standard on most personal sport rigs now days. I've used them for the past 17 or 18 years. It's mostly a preference but here are some things that may help you decide. If you want to use soft links or "Slinks" (which is the trend) then you will most likely want mini risers. It is possible to use "Slinks" on the larger risers but it makes it very difficult to get them on properly. Slinks keep your slider grommets from getting damaged when the slider comes all the way down your lines on opening. Also if you want to pull your slider down behind your head then you will want mini risers (and slinks) so the slider grommets will come down over the risers. Many young jumpers don't think they will want to do this but often change their minds after getting more experience. Bringing the slider down behind your head in combination with loosening your chest strap after opening, will allow the canopy to flatten out, thus making it a more efficient and stable wing. Some people will tell you that you don't need to mess with bringing the slider down and expanding your chest strap. Those are usually people who don't do it and therefore don't understand the benefits. When I conduct a canopy course it's one of the first things I have the participants do. By the end of the course they can't imagine going back to the old way. But I digress. I would suggest you talk to your rigger in more detail about mini risers and Slinks. Keep asking questions of everyone but know this: just because someone has thousands of jumps or is a rigger or an instructor, or willing to opine on the internet, does not mean that they have all the right answers. Take the information you get and run it by others. But make sure they tell you the "why" behind their answers and then employ your critical thinking skills. There are many varied opinions out there. Some are right, some are wrong, some are just different. Good luck and Be Safe Sandy Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

quote " but could you fill me in on how a one size higher d-bag could possibly cause a mal?" **************************************** Paul, it is my opinion that a one size bigger bag can not cause a malfunction which is why I posted that I have not had a malfunction in the last 4000 jumps, even though I have used this method since 1989. Now, if you get a bag so big that the canopy does not fill it out enough or does not put enough pressure on the closing flap/bib so as to keep your locking stows firm then yes, it could cause a malfunction by causing an out of sequence opening. But that is not what I'm suggesting. When you watch most people pack, you will see them struggling with getting the canopy in the bag. I've seen some people make two or three attempts before finally winning the battle. All the while they are messing up that pack job they spent so much time getting pefect. And then most people have fabric sticking out of the closing flap after making the locking stows. Now, that will cause a malfuntion or at the very least an off heading opening due to out of sequence openings. Going up one size will not cause a problem but will make a huge difference when it comes to putting your canopy in the bag. If you can put it in the bag with less hassle and less wrestling of fabric then doesn't it make sense that the canopy will be more likely to come out in the sequence you intended? Plus the more you fight the fabric the more likely you will allow the slider to ease down from the stops which is not good. And we all know that as soon as you leave ZP alone for a few seconds it seems like it doubles in size. Which is why I've never had a problem with my canopy filling out the bigger bag. I also double wrap all of my line stows. Yes, even the locking stows. WOW. I'm really sticking my neck out there now. Let the flame throwing begin. It's interesting that the pilot claimed a "dust devil" caused the crash. There was no dust devil. I noticed he didn't mention that he took off down wind in a quartering tail wind. The airplane was trimmed for landing and he forgot to trim it for takeoff before the takeoff roll. Larry flew the previous load. Our pilot drove us out in the bus and then got in the plane. Larry drove the bus back to manifest and then right back out with it to the crash site. Not trimming the plane is not always a big deal if noticed soon enough, which he did. But instead of just reaching down to adjust the trim and glancing down periodically while doing so, he locked his eyes on the trim indicator while adjusting it. That's when the plane started drifting off the runway to the left. Then when he looked back up, he "knee jerked" the yoke back into his lap before we had enough airspeed and it was off to the races. Dust devil my ass. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

For the past 20 years, I have always bought a deployment bag that is one size bigger than my main. It makes it so much easier to get your canopy in the bag. Now, I know most people on here will say "that's foolish" and "that's dangerous" and "that could cause a malfunction" and on and on. Believe me I've heard it all. Malfunctions in the last 4000 jumps (knock, knock, knock) = zero. I will admit, I am one of those old f**ckers to whom you may not want to listen. For the rest of you, flame away if you care to. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
