    If you're in class (or a meeting, or WHATEVER that you should be focusing your attention on) your phone should be off. That's the courtesy you should extend to others. It's not just the Prof (or your colleagues) that you're interrupting. It's EVERYONE! If you're that important (or there's something going on in your life that's that important) don't leave the house. I have a cell phone for MY convenience, not everyone else's. I hate it when someone interrupts a meeting to answer their phone. It just tells me that I'm less important than their call.
