  1. Doesn't experimental also cover AC owners that want to mod their plane for different reasons? It seems like I had a friend that modified the engine of his Pitts a lot, so that he could get better performance out of it. Acrobatic pilot. He explained to me that he wanted to be able to have a professional engine mechanic do the engine mods without having to go through the recertification process - too expensive, or something like that. I'm not a pilot, and it probably shows right now. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  2. How much money do you pay for your other rights? How many US Dollars to you pay to not be bonded into slavery or not be subject to arbitrary arrest? I'm talking out of pocket expenses, here. And why do you think that any healthcare would be free? In the extreme case of socialized medicine, taxpayers would still foot the bill, just as they pay our other rights. It doesn't help new users that the "hide" button is hidden If you don't know where the hide button it, follow the first line of the Facebook post all the way to the right. Just keep following it to the right - eventually, a magic "hide" dropdown will appear. From here, you can hide users or games (like Facebook). But you're still stuck with every NEW game someone starts playing. There's a tool out there to block all the games - if I can find it again, I'll post. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  4. FYI - vegetarianism doesn't automatically imply a calorie reduction. Next time you're at Burger King, check out the BK Veggie burger - it's not beans and rice, as far as calories go. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  5. If you think that environmental regulation was the reason for the auto manufacturer's demise, then you're right it's not a good parallel. Personally, I think that it was their poor financial decisions, and an overpaid union. The entire point of group insurance is that it's for a group - that includes higher risk and lower risk clientele. Once insurance companies start offering "group" policies to select people, it's not group insurance, it's discrimination. And discrimination was certainly the point - there was NO medical reason to deny the infant - only one underwriter's personal bias. As a group insurance provider, you mitigate that by appealing and marketing to healthy people - not by denying specific children based on your assumption that fat babies are sick and/or dying. 6. Most of the time, I would agree, but not all the time. The US government mandates that auto-makers fleets have an average gas mileage. That means auto makers must sometimes sell small fuel-efficient vehicles at break-even or even a loss. They make their money from larger vehicles, and therefore pushed SUV sales for most of the 80s, 90s and into this new millennium. So, the government has effectively forced the auto manufacturers to sell some of their product at a loss. The benefit is cleaner air. That's a good thing. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  7. Didn't say any of that - just said you were wrong. Insurance company denied insurance, they were publicly called-out, they reversed their policy, and said it was a problem with their underwriting policy. That's about as black and white as you can get. If the couple had lied about something, the insurance co would have stated that as a defense. If they had selected an incorrect policy, they probably would have said something about that too. They didn't. Sure, and Obama might really be a Muslim. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  8. All you folks that were "guessing" that there was something else wrong with the baby, or that the parents weren't signed up for the "correct" service - you're wrong. How about siding with people for a change, instead of rich, greedy corporations? This just made the headlines of the Denver Post. They got called out, and now they're backtracking to save face: Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  9. I have a new Vector container with mag riser covers, and I'll never get another container without them. This is my third container, the Vector 2 I originally owned had velcro, and it worked OK. The Voodoo I had after that had stiff riser covers, and they were ALWAYS coming undone. Mag riser covers are the bomb. Also, I have the Tru-lock toggles, and I think that would have also prevented the problem that the original poster described. USPA just sent out an email about two new incidents of this type - I suppose that the OP was one of those incidents. But I'm glad she posted anyway, because that picture is awesome! 10. I won't imply he was a good tailor without meeting him - just the fact that he works at the Men's Wearhouse, he probably isn't. But a good tailor can do measurements by just looking. I've had a custom fit by a guy that looked at me, and to 1/8th of an inch guessed every size on me, with his apprentice following it up with a tape measure just to make sure. He was really old, and had been doing it his entire life, trained by his father and grandfather. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  11. Everytime I post something factual with a link, my sources get questioned. But dude, your link is to Angelfire Because it's a big system. In fact, the biggest in the world. I've been to the UK, and I've known many Americans that live and work there, that also get medical treatment there. The Brits say the same thing, "poor Americans, they all come here for medical treatment." Governments are big, lots of people, and people travel around for different reasons. 12. Well, then I guess all Americans can feel that they won the award together, since we voted for Obama. In essence, the Nobel Committee is giving the award to all of us for not allowing the Bush agenda to continue. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  13. Well, I don't think it makes sense to give someone a Peace Prize based on what they are promising to do. But I don't think it was a bad move to nominate him nine months ahead of time. The Nobel committee knows the timeline, they knew there would still be another nine months for Obama to prove himself. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  14. I'm in a barn-burning mood, so, here's another story: http://blackrobeaz.blogspot.com/2009/03/blog-post_31.html A man holds an intruder in his own home at gunpoint, calls 9-1-1, tell them he has an intruder at gunpoint. The police come and shoot the homeowner six times. The police officers did not even get a slap on the wrist. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  15. Freedom has become a religious word. Everyone wants it, and we like to believe that we have it, even though we do not. It's easier to get people to do what you want when you're appealing to irrational emotions. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  16. lol - there's no Nobel Prize for "shaking things up and scaring the crap out of corporations and governments". Nor is there for "empowering the people and destabilizing the status quo". But there should be! Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  17. Obama will be accepting the prize, and donating the award money to charity. And I will point out that while Hitler was nominated, Ghandi never won. So it's an imperfect system - big deal? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  18. I can't say I agree with their decision, but it's their decision, not mine. We as a nation are still fighting two foreign wars - why would our leader get a peace prize? As far as the comment about not doing anything significant overseas, I think that's incorrect. 1. The President and Congress passed a huge economic recovery act. Most of that money went to investors overseas that would have lost their shirts for believing in the US Dollar. That's a major accomplishment for those foreign people - not so much for the American taxpayer 2. He did actually get troops out of Baghdad (and all other major Iraqi cities). We have yet to get all troops out of Iraq, but this was a major accomplishment, IMO. And finally, although the Nobel Prize is a significant award, it is rife with controversy, including Hitler's offense at not being awarded the peace prize http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_Prize_controversies Edit - and yeah, I agree with lawrocket - if I was Obama, I would be embarrassed a bit, refuse the prize and then apologize the rest of my life for doing so. 20. Agree. Anytime I hear "lawmakers are considering a bill", that's just fodder for the press, so they can float ideas to the public without any real backlash. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
