In many cities, riding on the sidewalk is against the law. Bikers still do it, of course, but they are in the wrong to do so. I'm actually glad they do - I feel like their lungs filter a bit of the air pollution. I wish I could get a few to ride behind my V-8 pickup. I would feel better about the damage I'm doing to the environment. Bikers are terrible about this - no doubt. If they want to be treated with respect, and want to really "share the road", they need to obey the traffic laws, just like the rest of us. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Personally, I blame Zoroastrians for killing nuclear power. Unfortunately, there is little merit to either of our claims about what caused it's relegation. This article is a good read: http://www.21stcenturysciencetech.com/articles/spring01/nuclear_power.html This guy woman blames it on bad marketing people that projected the cost at about 1/10th of final cost. What does that guy lady know, anyway? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

People really need to see side-by-side comparisons between nuclear emissions and fossil-fuel emissions, even the hydro-electric footprint! If they did, they would see that there is no comparison. Nuclear is by far our best option. By far. Yes, we need to exploit solar and wind as well, but nuclear should replace fossil-fuels as the primary source of energy. There are a couple of Japanese firms that are manufacturing small-scale reactors that take a small amount of time to manufacture. Toshiba has a 10,000 KW generator that is already in the process of U.S. approval, and Mitsubishi has a much larger one that is not far behind: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/25/japanese-firms-to-develop_n_333018.html Combining electric power from non-fossil sources, most of it nuclear, and the push toward more electric vehicles may be the only realistic shot we have of getting to clean air in our lifetimes. I'm very excited to see a change coming in energy production and utilization in this country. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Plane passenger accidentally activates ejector seat

IIRC, the F-111 (Aardvark?) was a side-by-side pilot/co-pilot configuration. I imagine the ejection seat for that would be very interesting. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD -

why, after all this time, is Windows so fucking lame?
riddler replied to SpeedRacer's topic in The Bonfire
You need to get: 1. Windows 7 2. Windows Live OneCare 3. Upgrade to at least 3 gig of ram Then it won't be as bad. Although, I agree, for most people, a Mac is going to do you better. The exception is if you use PCs for work - you will eventually want to work from home, so get a PC. But I refuse to buy anything except Sony at this point. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD -
Maybe you can give us a definition. I have yet to see one that isn't arguable. In general, the only way to measure OS/US is retroactively - as in "the market WAS oversold three months ago, that's why it's tanking now." What you said is that the market IS oversold right now - that is a misnomer. If the market crashes in the next few months, then it is valid (and somewhat moot) to reflect back and say that the market WAS oversold. Saying the market is oversold right now is merely trying to sell your own opinion that you think it's going to get worse before it gets better. OB/OS is a distinct and separate definition, measuring the momentum of the market, and it can be taken in a lot of different contexts. You can make the argument that momentum has slowed in the current market, and I will point out that this is an annual trend for this time of year. In addition to that, if one is a right-winger suffering from ODS, then said person is going to want to believe that the market is absolutely in the worst possible situation, all because there's a Democrat in charge. I personally don't think the market cares who the POTUS is. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I've seen naked titties on Colorado news stations for breast awareness (demonstrating the self-exam). The issue here is that they decided to air it during sweeps week Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD -
The market IS the indicator as to how well it's doing. It can never be over or under sold - it is what it is. Maybe a better way to phrase what you are trying to say is that you think the market will go back down in the future. Well, there are thousands of unemployed stock market analysts that think it will go back up and back down, so feel free to join that crowd. That's like saying house prices were over-valued - they sold for what they sold for, the fact that many people leveraged themselves past what is reasonable is beside the point. It cost the four organizers a year in jail and $3.5 million Hopefully, they'll win the appeal to stay out of jail at least Won't be long before that plug gets pulled, or they at least move. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I won't testify with first-hand experience, but I have a cousin that restores some antique cars - '53 Plymouth Bel-Air, and the like. Anyway, he shows them at car competitions, and one time he got dinged by a judge for his car being too shiny. He had used a silicon finish. Before the next showing the following weekend, he took some Lemon Pledge and rubbed it all over the surface, and I guess that dulled it down enough to look more authentic. This is a second-hand story, just passing along the information. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Donate organs to whoever needs them; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Burn the parts you can't use and throw it in an ashtray for all I care. I understand the point of burying bodies in the ground to prevent them from stinking too bad, and the neighbor dogs from dragging you around everywhere; in ancient times, the underground body would just decompose after a few years. But seriously, the practice of mummifying your body as a whole, stuffing it inside a box, putting that inside another METAL box, that just lies stagnant in the earth for the next 3,000 years? It's a silly ritual that should have died with the Egyptian Pharaohs. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I see it as comparable to a Cable Television model, which has both advertisements and a subscription service. They did quote the Deputy Chairman of News Corp, and it hasn't been approved by the board yet, so it may not happen. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

People that use the 'net television service Hulu, you'll have to start paying out, beginning next year, according to a new report. My guess is user base will drop off considerably after the change, then slowly ramp back up. I remember when cable television came out - people asked why should they pay for it, when broadcast television is free. These days, very few homeowners use broadcast television. But I also remember when cable didn't have commercials Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

AT&T can't even provide coverage in the US, much less a deserted island. They even have a 30% dropped call rate in New York city. You'd have to be on a resort island to get any kind of coverage from the Death Star. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I've been scratched by plenty of cats, and I never had it swell up like that, so I don't understand. Is this a bacterial infection? I imagine cat claws end up with some pretty nasty bacteria on them. I don't own pets anymore. My mom does, and I take my two girls over to her house once or twice a week. Yesterday, my 18-month old disappeared chasing one of the cats, and when I finally found her, she was eating dry cat-food out of the cat-dish, with the cat lying on the other side watching her. Well, that would be bullshit, because the implication is that the test is valid AND that only a certain profile would fit a specific job. There isn't any evidence that a person of a certain type can't do a job as well as of another type. It's discrimination at best. As far as the test - each category is on a sliding scale, so it's not that people get put into boxes, but tend to "lean" in one direction. Some people lean a lot But most people fit a moderate profile in at least 2 out of 4 categories. I'm not sold on MB - I've taken it a few times, and I see patterns that seem to match my personality. I don't think it's as far-fetched as Astrology, but I don't think it's the ultimate measure of character either. I definitely don't think it's worth paying money for Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I'm interested in your opinion, because I knew a few respected therapists that use it in their evaluations of clients (one is my marriage counselor ). I know there is some controversy, as indicated in the Wiki: I'm interested if you've seen any studies that show there is no correlation between the results and personality types. I haven't seen any actual studies that prove, for instance, that Myers Briggs inherits a Forer Effect. If you could show me, I would appreciate that. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
