1. There was this girl Elizabeth in the second grade that used to take me behind the garage every day and drop her panties for me It was slightly better than the typical kindergarten romance. Wait - what were we talking about? Oh yeah, easy-bake ovens. Hell, I didn't have time for that shit when I was a kid. I was too busy getting my feel on. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
2. In a subsequent email, Frank adds: I am going to assume that Frank has the best intentions here, and that the brownies are not really for him Michael - you're going to have to put up with the smell of brownies on Saturday morning as I make my usual batch. It's been a while since I made fudge, though ... Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Jeff normally flew the big American flag into the CU stadium for the Bolder Boulder. This year, the Bolder Boulder will take place on May 26th. Anyone know what will happen? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
4. I used my power of force shield protection to keep the plane running. I am sad to say that I failed in my task, and my evil nemesis MonkeyWrench succeeded in breaking the over-power govenor. So we all had to get off the plane and go home. I never claimed to be a great superhero. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

A recent announcement from the manager at the dropzone: The details of that statement will probably take some time to sort out. I'm sure we'll find out more at the memorial. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Preliminary information is that a memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday at Mile-Hi. No official word yet. Another news story: http://www.msnbc.com/local/rmn/DRMN_1920789.asp?0na=x22233F0-&cp1=1 Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Without trying to contribute too much to rumor and speculation, I think, and I think a lot of others also think, that the DZ was already being managed and run by good people that *could* easily continue to run an operate the DZ, if they are allowed to. Jeff was a very smart businessman and that led a lot of others to dislike him in many ways. He was smart enough to recognize good employees and he made sure those people were in a position to operate the DZ without him. I personally hope that is allowed to happen. FlyAngel - are you going to Skyventure with the others on Saturday? I hope you have fun, whatever you're doing. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Michael - we thought this at first, but the owner of the Pitts is not Jim. Mustard says that the Boulder daily news has reported the passenger as Jeff and the pilot as someone else. Edit: Thanks Michael - the pilot was Thomas Earl Bullington. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I did not post in Incidents because this was not a skydiving related incident. But I think those that have been in the sport for some time realize how big of an impact that this will have on the Colorado community, and on the skydiving community as a whole. Other questions I can PM on, but I'm not the first source of information, so I don't know a lot more than what I've already stated. There are a lot of rumors and confusion right now and I don't want to contribute to that in this public forum. I had my personal feelings about Jeff, but I respected him very much as a skydiver, and he was with me on more than a few jumps, including AFF jumps and proficiency jumps. He ran an outstanding dropzone and introduced many people to the sport. In the end, he was part of our family, so best wishes to everyone. Blue ones, Jeff. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Jeff Sands, owner of Mile-Hi Skydiving center in Longmont, Colorado was killed today in a small airplane crash. The incident was not skydiving related. Jeff was at the dropzone this morning and I talked to him. He was in good spirits and gave me a personal report on density altitude and advice on a new rig that I am jumping. He later took a ride with a friend at the same airport in a two-seat Pitts Special bi-plane (aerobatic). The plane crashed at about 2 PM about 20 miles north of the dropzone in the town of Berthoud. Jeff was an accomplished skydiver and well-known member of the community, recently participating in the world-record 300-way formation jump in Eloy. Our best wishes for his family and friends, many of them who post here on dropzone.com. 12. OK - I know almost nothing about BASE, but I had no idea that any BASE rigs had more than one canopy. Do some BASE jumpers use two canopies specifically for this reason? Also, can anyone say there's a definitive reason that canopy transfer has gone out of style (i.e. it's not taught anymore)?

15. Canuck - I saw the same thing last spring. It seemed like as the weather was getting warmer, incidents suddenly spiked, but then got a little better in the summer. I'm guessing it's combination. Lots of folks don't jump in the cold, so they're out of practice. People have forgotten what it's like to have that many jumpers in the air at once, so collisions/wraps are more prevalent. Density altitude makes landings that much faster. More total jumps increase incidents. I think it's true for everyone - not just jumpers. Pilots, manifest, S&TAs (with procedures), etc. The increase in traffic and the changing weather conditions. 16. I can give you an example of one: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=410515;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread Winds were squirrely all day, and one unfortunate person got caught in a downdraft, while an instructor landed safely close by. Great post, Bill. You explain things very clearly. It's my belief that airlocks help in more than just "minor" ways with collapse (but not line slack), but that's definitely a non-expert non-pilot newbie opinion. I'll let you know after a few thousand jumps
17. Risk of entanglement? Let's say you're not flying a hotrod (else, the thing wouldn't fly straight anyway, right ), square or marginally elliptical. My older rig might be a good example. Triathalon 190 - nice docile 7-cell. Reserve is Raven-2 210. The tri is flying straight, but I can't turn or flare. I then pull the reserve, wait for it to inflate and *almost* get above my head (not quite let the canopies touch). Let's assume it was headed for a biplane, and not side-by-side or downplane, since biplane is the most likely. Just about when it's over my head, I chop the main. Seems like the risk of entanglement is there, but somewhat low. I assume the risk of entanglement is why this is frowned upon at DZs today? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
18. OK, wow, I saw this in the incidents forum, and I wanted to clarify because I've never heard of it. I've only been in the sport about a year and half now. Wait - this goes against a lot of the training I've had. I've heard that if you are very low and have a malfunctioning mail that is not slowing you down much, get "more fabric" over your head by popping the reserve. I've never heard reserve first, then release main. It looks like for a very special set of circumstances. Was this something that was taught in the past but not taught today? Can anyone elaborate on the specific circumstances you would do this? Also, is this CReW technique (I've never done CReW)?
