  1. Nope - it looked like wheat until I was about 20 feet above it. Then all I could do was say "oh, shit" and PLF. Of course, it was 8 feet tall, so my lines were a mess. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  2. I love bringing my friends to the DZ for a tandem jump. Some of them get it and say things like "now I know why you do this". Others get scared witless and think I'm crazy for doing it. But the fun thing is that everyone gets the experience, good or bad. Some pics from my friend Jason's tandem this last weekend. I couldn't lurk - I had to do a demo with the flag and land in a cornfield while he was jumping. But he sent me some pics. From the looks of it, he had a good time Note to women here - Jason was recently voted one of Denver's Hottest Singles by 5280 magazine. He's young, single, good-looking, very nice, and owns a successful business. I can hook you up with his email for a small fee Nothing wrong with pimping out your friends, is there? 3. I totally agree - I love LOTR - I'm a big fan of the books. But how many different ways can you sell the same product? I bought the first two for $17 each at Best Buy the first day they were released. I'll do the same with the third. Then in a few years when all the hype is over and they release a 20-DVD set with the bonus tracks of special noises Gollum makes in the bathtub, the 25 minute Liv Tyler drunk-on-the-set-tirade of whining about how shallow her character is, and the extended two-hour viewing of fans standing in line waiting for the first screening and picking their nose - I'll sell the first three and buy that one
  4. Dude - if I actually got all the money from all the Nigerian scams I've gotten over the years, I could seriously pay off all US government debt. And then some. The last six months, they've been coming as "you've won some foreign lottery", or from other countries. Not surprising, since 411 scams are the 3rd largest source of income in Nigeria, so they must be duping a lot of people. Here's a fun site where they try to scam the Nigerian scammers.
  5. Hooknswoop has a good story about a guy that chucked his handles and one flew up into the reserve slider and it's cable went into the slider grommet. That's a rare case, but it seems like there are advantages and disadvantages to whatever you do, so do what you're comfortable with. Personally, when I had my one cutaway, I flung my handles into the next county. Next time, I'll probably try to keep them.
  6. Check out the FAQ, bro. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  7. Ginger Lynn NSFW Oh, C'mon Quade - it's not that bad. On the first page, anyway Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  8. Great - thanks for pointing out this one. Cypres always required, and RSL conditionally required, unless waived by supervising instructor.
  9. If someone doesn't mind clarifying - it looks to me like since the S-folds were too long, they managed to work around the lower left-hand corner of the freebag. That would result in the spring-loaded pilot-chute stopping short and not getting enough slack to clear the burble. Is that right? I guess there's the possibility that enough force would be applied to actually pull the freebag out of the container. At that point, you would have ... a mess if the bridlewas wrapped around the freebag.
  10. I've seen it done a few different ways. If you put more than one knot, what is your rationale?
  11. I agree - I think it's one of the better skydiving movies, depsite the terrible acting, because it comes closer to a "real" DZ experience than the other movies. Lots of phony Hollywood stuff for sure, but quite a few things that skydivers can relate to. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  12. Sept 6th - Mile Hi does 26 loads. Sept 7th - Mile Hi's King Air does two low altitude drops visavis cloud cover, then it's generator went out. Next time, I suggest do your volleyball on Sunday. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  13. First time, 10/20. Second time, 19/20. Proving that my senses suck, but my short-term memory is very good. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  14. 2+:2:0 2 jumps on Saturday - one free for referring a freind of mine for a tandem. The second one was a demo, where I landed in a field of 8-foot corn. Got my canopy untangled, put few holes in my slider, hiked 1/2 mile through very tall corn with a canopy and streamer singing songs about corn. The sad thing was out of all of this, there was nothing new to buy beer for Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  15. And what flavor was the pie?
  16. Hookitt is right. I have a Lotus 150 that lands better than my Triathalon 190. The others are also right - there's no rush to downsize at all. Finally, you are the pilot in command and the one taking the risk. The rest of us are just trying to help you understand the risk. Skr always tells me "You don't know what you don't know. If you can get to the point where you at least know what you don't know, you're just beginning to understand." (or something like that). Truth is, you won't know until after you make the mistake (and maybe hurt yourself ) - no need to rush getting hurt.
  17. I think you should too, but it's not required in the BSRs - only suggested. After the RSL thread, I was sure that the BSRs required an RSL for students, but I've been searching the BSRs, FARs, et al, and I can find no requirements as such for either AAD or RSL. The only things I can find are an RSL is recommended for all experienced jumpers (SIM 5.3.F.2), and an AAD is encouraged for all licensed jumpers (SIM 5.3.G.2). Nothing about either in the student section (2.1.E). Personally, I think students should have both, so I kind of hope I'm wrong about this, but I don't think USPA requires them for students or experienced jumpers. Can anyone point out to me where it's required?
  18. Right - no lift Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  19. That's what got me into skydiving in the first place. I knew even if there was a terrible accident, they could rebuild me, they have the technology. Then I would have cool bionics and be able to crush my enemies. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  20. If you're really behind, you can always go "no look", but it's pretty dangerous.
  21. I know we just added three new forums for multi-lingual and all, but it seems like there's oft questions about Wind Tunnels, and while it's not skydiving, I think it would be a nice addition to the "related sports" section, along with BASE. With all the new tunnels being built, we can channel some of the noise out of talkback and other forums. If no one else wants to step up, I'll volunteer to be moderator
  22. Just wanted to add a link to make it easier to see: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/dropzone/review.cgi?ID=200 Ed - and since I see a duplicate entry for my email address, I hope this isn't just me? Anyone else see this error?
  23. Just want to add that I love this faceplate
  24. ?? Do you know how they calculate this? Also, since we're talking about a reserve - I believe the opening time is mandated - something like 350 feet at sea level?

    Faces

I think I've mentioned before how I want a puking face - like a green guy with puffed up cheeks that looks like he's about to hurl. It would come in handy. You guys have no idea how often you make me sick. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
