skr lent me a book entitled "SKYDIVING - the art and science of sport parachuting", second printing, 1962, hardback, $6.50. This is a treasure of what skydiving, as well as general social views, used to be like. Among other things, the author constantly refers to skydivers as "him", "he", etc, and occasionally makes a remark that yes, there are women skydivers too. Also, it's all about rounds, baby! 28 and 24 square foot, and the author describes in detail how to pack and maintain them. It's a nice reflection of how the rules and regulations have changed. No USPA - the official organization is the PCA - Parachute Club of America. A thorough, although biased toward American, history of skydiving, including a detailed description of Kittinger's jump (with pictures), and a remark about how someday, when humans finally travel in space

Maybe we should amend to say: "What happens at the freefall convention stays at the freefall convention, except for the video, which may be shared at a later date with anyone and everyone in such a way as to maximize public embarrassment." Personally, I know most skydivers use good judgement and wouldn't go out of their way to hurt a fellow skydiver by sharing video without consent. Or am I just naive? No, but they were pretty harsh about what you could bring in, and anyone with a camera was immediately thrown out. She said she would stop the show if she saw any cameras. I think she believes that the pictures will steal her soul or something - it's nice to have pagans in the mix, they make the world so interesting. The opening act was some crazy guy that sang about his sister Lisa and how he was a bear in a past life or something. We kept laughing at him. I love Red Rocks, too - it's the best open air venue I've ever been too. We were just there a few weeks ago and they showed LOTR2 on the big screen. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

This stuff is actually pretty good, and I found Cutter worked pretty well in Honduras to keep them away. Bets - if you have any Vick's Vapor Rub lying around, it works better than most of the anti-itch creams. And now I'll stop with the home remedies

Don't want to contribute to what I consider a media panic, fueled by corporate greed (i.e. companies that sell insect repellent), but it doesn't hurt to take a little extra precaution, considering some of the little buggers carry West Nile virus. I had one pin bend. It's well more than .005, since it's actually visible to the naked eye. My reserve ripcord had a Dolphin part number. I just called Altico today and talked to Mike. He's a real nice guy and is sending me a new one today, and I'm sending the bent one back to him. I think that Brian said that both the fingertrap of the steering line and the soft link got caught in the grommet of the slider. This incident is the reason that I pull my slider down past the soft links. Hooknswoop's words of wisdom: Either get bumpers and keep the slider up and away from the links, or pull it down all the way past the links and stow it behind your head. I have two rigs - one with rapids that I keep the slider up, and one with soft links that I pull the slider down all the way behind my head. Edited to add - yep, it happened after my controllability check, as stated in the original post. Also, I personally consider a 1.3 wingload high for my skill level (200 jumps), but I haven't had your canopy training either Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
