Absolutely kickass. I fell in love with tracking when I tried it last weekend, and I'm getting a tracker tag. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

I still don't understand why there is no Nobel prize for mathematics. If it wasn't for Reimann, for instance, none of that general relativity stuff would be possible. Not to mention Banach, Hilbert and their spaces, that are used in quantum mechanics left and right. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 12. Definitely. What you are describing is the perfect example of why depression needs to be taken seriously. It's good to hear that you were able to overcome something as serious as what happened to you. Keep up the good work. I would shake your hand if I could. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 13. Did you buy beer? ...We used to light fires in the backyard of our building in Russia and throw exploding compressed gas cans into it to scare the people in the building. 15. Why should it be insulting? As far as I know, there is only one way to evaluate medical treatment, and it doesn't involve value judgements. I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that marijuana helps depression sufferers. In fact, I believe we already heard that. If the statistics support it, we must accept it as a viable treatment. What's wrong with it, anyway? -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
  16. Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said that people with depression are weak individuals, or that they could have done it by themselves. I just said that too many people underestimate the amount of fighting that the person himself has to do. I've been on prescribed SSRIs myself, and they seemed like they helped, but if you read that paragraph I posted you will see why I now hold the opinion that, for the majority of depression sufferers, what gets them through is the placebo effect. If, for one second, someone thinks that the placebo effect makes you weak, remember your own jumping. Ever took three deep breaths before climbing out? That's a placebo effect. Could you have triggered the same thing without the deep breaths? What is the difference between restoring serotonin levels artificially and duping the brain into doing it by itself? Neither could have been done by the individual alone. Also remember that neuropsychology today hasn't even touched the tip of the iceberg. All we know is that, somewhere, there is an iceberg, and that it seems to be made of ice. Noone knows the exact mechanism of depression. They're just making educated guesses and checking to see if they work. That depression is a serious illness is indubitable, but it's current treatment seems to be, that's all. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 17. Hear hear. While there is definitely a lot to be said for things like SSRIs and ECT, in most cases it was the strength of the person, with a little nudge from a helping hand, that overcame the depression, and not some panacea drug. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 19. My reference is my professor, so don't attack me I'll see if I can dig anything in my book. As we all know, that professor could be wrong. Oh, and if you think that I'm one of those people that treat manic depression with a "cheer up", I'm not. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
  20. The question is, what did he mean by that? If most people who are treated with SSRIs are in a fairly minor depression that can only be classified as a disorder because they're complaining, then it's possible that placebos will be almost as effective. All that means is that, while the drugs do work, they're not really necessary in most cases. EDITED TO ADD: I didn't mean to say that all cases of depression can be solved by just deciding not to be depressed, but perhaps most can be? Skydiving comes in as a helper in the decision process, a positive reinforcement, and the person just forgets about being depressed. There's a saying in psychology - "Everything psychological is also biological". Well, maybe it cuts both ways in this case. Biological depression can also be psychological? -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. Interesting

Per hour it may be much more dangerous, but if I only accumulate a couple of those hours, maybe a few dozens for the most hardcore jumpers, in my jumping career, I'm still probably below the time I spend waiting at red lights a year, not even to mention highway driving. So even though an hour of freefall may be dangerous, we don't get many hours, so it all balances out. Or does it? -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
  22. Wow, congratulations. Good job! The only thing that worries me about skydiving being a "medicine" for mood disorders is the liability factor. There are many people for whom skydiving is not the best idea. What we need is to distill the reason why skydiving has such a positive effect and apply it. If done right, this will not be reduced to white-coat work. Perhaps the real problem lies in the current treatment? My intro psych prof this year said that the success rate of the SSRIs is only a couple of percent above placebo. It's the person that decides, conciously or not, that they don't want to be depressed any more. This makes me think that skydiving is a form of positive reinforcement treatment.
