  1. I heard it on the edge. I can't find the story anywhere else, and I wouldn't be too surprised if they made it up. In fact, I kind of hope they did -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 2. I heard this news story on the radio about a guy who was found unconcious with a head injury in his house. A drill was found next to him. He died in the hospital. The police determined that it was suicide. He wanted to see how deep he could go with the drill before passing out. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. Single Helix

I just got my order from Single Helix. The guys there were very helpful even though it was a considerable effort to process my order. They didn't have the international order system set up at the time. The cut outs and the tags themselves are great. You can see what they look like on the site, but what you can't see is the thickness of the plate they're made from. If anyone is worried about their durability, put those worries to rest. The plate is very thick, and it wouldn't bend even if it gets caught on a zipper in freefall or something. The service is prompt and helpful and the products are great. Go here to check them out. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

    Just Another RANT

Honestly, you are probably shunned because you skydive. Sorry man... You probably take it almost for granted by now, but to non-jumpers it's the loudest yell of something or other there is. If you didn't jump they probably wouldn't notice your personality as much. Plus they may be scared that you'll drag their son into it. For some reason, a person can listen to statistics until the speaker is blue in the face and still believe they will be the exception. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. Bad idea. "Adults" never listen to "children". They don't listen to much, really. I'm now forming an opinion that it's a natural mechanism of social development. Hey now, Clay, just because you're on your own living the good life doesn't mean you can rub it in the nose of someone less fortunate, does it? Seriously Casch, this is still mild. It could be worse, much worse. Your friend will get free, get a life with your gracious help, and hopefully will remember the mistakes of his parents when(if) he becomes a parent himself. And somewhere, someone is putting two more dollars in your if-I-had-a-dollar-for-every-asshole-I-meet fund. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. 11. Alright, so, in a glide, the thrust component of the lift will cause the jumper+rig system to accelerate until drag=thrust. Drag should be proportional to the surface area presented to the relative wind, which is the nose. Drag is also related to the cube of the velocity, I think... Because of the ram air design, it is probably safe to assume that the entire nose acts like a solid surface with respect to the drag because it's full of air. So there you go. More AOA, higher thrust component, more drag required to compensate, more time to reach "terminal", higher "terminal". Less cell volume, less drag generated, takes longer to compensate for thrust, higher "terminal" velocity acquired by the system. If my assumptions are true and I didn't forget anything, we can compare the same canopy under different wingloadings safely. Let's see. All else kept constant, AOA in particular, thrust is directly related to weight. All else being equal in the two canopies, we have: Drag/Drag' = (v^3)/(v'^3), and ratio of "terminal" velocities=cubic root of ratio of weights. Which tells us that, as you increase wingloading, you're going to see a dramatic difference between 1.2 and 1.5, but not that dramatic between 2.0 and 2.3, which I have no idea about with my 35 jumps

    Mexico (ow ow ow)

Been to Mexico for a week. Damn it's hot there. Overall it was really cool. Been to the Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza, with the bigass pyramid. They let people climb that thing. You see a whole bunch of really scared people, anywhere from 18 to 60 years old, crawling up and down the steps on all fours. I just ran all the way up and people were occasionally looking at me as if I escaped from a mental hospital. It's worth the climb, the view from up high is cool (heh). The inside of the pyramid gives you claustrophobia. There's a really long passage, barely tall enough to stand and a little wider than your shoulders. It leads to a chamber with two statues, and the some paint on those statues is still preserved. Went snorkeling. Sea turtles are cool and parrot fish are funny. Went in what they call a cenote, also. It's basically a sinkhole, but some of them have an underground river component. The one we were has a cavern mouth with a large open space that you can swim into safely without scuba gear. Other than that, there was a topless beach. Unfortunately, the only women that go topless there are the ones that you never want to see topless. Most memorable part of that trip is the dude that was our guide on the snorkeling trip. He told us we don't need protection from the sun, since we'll be swimming sufficiently low under the water. In a burst of stupidity, I listened to him. Now I've got a second degree(!) burn all over my upper back and shoulders, complete with blisters and excruciating pain. 13. Would it be safe to assume that the amount of lift the canopy generates is proportional to the suspended weight? The constant of proportionality is then determined by airfoil shape and the direction of the lift force is determined by the AOA. Seems to me it's sort of a no-brainer from here. 17. What do you guys think about using email to send CC numbers? What is the real risk I'm running with that? I understand that the email goes through my SMTP server to the POP3 server on the receiving end. I trust the receiving end. Does the SMTP server normally archive emails?
