The simplest and most correct answer is: First, stop the freefall. Then at least you'll be alive to sort the other stuff out. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

The earlier round reserves didn't but most of the newer lopos had that short line with the loops as you describe. The military prolly came up with it first, but I don't really recall or know for sure. Where's Dan Poynter when you need him? My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

Toggles on a round reserve?. Nah, nope, negative, Kemo Sabey. Roundies are more reliable the simpler they are. Toggles could catch lines during opening causing a problem....not good on your last chance. 4 line cut is better than a reserve with meshed gores during the opening sequence as well. You can steer (turn) the canopy by pulling the line adjacent to the 4 line cut on each side. (sometimes they're marked.) the 4 line cut will stop oscillations as has been said, and you'll get a little bit of drive out of it which could get you away from an obstacle if you have a bit of altitude and wind. Anything extra you get out of a round reserve ride is a bonus. As with any round reserve be ready to PLF to the max, whatever you are landing on. A lot of guys hooked the canopy up with the mod in the front, as you were more likely to be landing backwards in any sort of wind. Turning the mod into the wind on landing meant you were squeezing every ounce of drive out of it, while facing the direction you were landing, meaning a forward PLF rather than a backwards PLF. Student training meant PLF training to hell. PLFs have saved my butt and bones on a lot of jumps, plus once when I fell off a roof while painting it. Shit....I must be getting old!!!. Brushing against the airplane frame !!#@@##
obelixtim replied to erdnarob's topic in Safety and Training
Swing out from the airframe as you take up your position, so you don't brush up against the airframe. Tape up, or better still if possible, get the protruding hinge taken off when preparing the plane for jumping. If the plane is used exclusively for jumping and has a plexiglass door anyway, the door hinge is pretty much redundant. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
Mandatory AAD's 2 (was: Franklin County fatality)
obelixtim replied to flyboy6554's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
(bolded quote): Just to note, it is often said that an AAD save is a bounce that didn't happen, so the "why" question should be the first and most important one. Followed by "what have you done to fix your EP's?(assuming the jumper isn't a victim of a FF collision) (underlined quote): I haven't seen anyone advocating that POV at all. Rather I have seen comments that relying on AAD's as a replacement for EPs is folly, and proper execution of EP's should make the carrying (or not) of an AAD irrelevant. And thats how it should be. Sometimes in the past, the use of an AAD resulted in the bowling speech...maybe that should happen a bit more often!. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
Hypothetical modern skydiver lands 50 years ago
obelixtim replied to riggerrob's topic in The Bonfire
He'd be grounded for having incorrectly shaped canopies with flimsy looking lines, and an altimeter that didn't come from an aircraft dashboard. If he had no military background someone would prolly set the feds on him. If he somehow was allowed to jump, he'd prolly be called a smartarse for landing on the airfield every time. But he'd find the beer very cheap. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
Two-out.. biplane with twisted reserve. Cut away or ride it down?
obelixtim replied to Fall0ut's topic in Safety and Training
The cutaway/don't cutaway from a two out debate has raged for many years. A very limited amount of testing has been done with the scenario, and the other information has come from real life situations. Too variable a sample. You'll prolly get divided opinions on the "correct" procedure whoever you ask for advice. I wouldn't take any "decisive" advice you are given as gospel, no matter who gives it to you. Too many variables generally make the cutaway/don't cutaway argument a 50/50 proposition. What it boils down to is there is no right or wrong answer. What you get away with today, with identical circumstances, could well kill you tomorrow. You just have to assess the situation, keep cool, and be ready with a plan B should things get nasty. Inputting toggles or risers to make something happen if you have two inflated canopies that are stable is prolly not a good idea. When impacting the planet, the more drag inducing material you have above your head the better. How hard you impact in that scenario can ultimately boil down to how much luck you are having that day. Hopefully the luck is the good variety, rather than bad. It doesn't always have to be bad. Talking to experienced CRW dogs is a good idea if you can do so. They have some experience of flying canopies in close proximity to each other. You may pick up a gem that may just save your life. Stay cool. Assess the situation, have a plan A, and a plan B as well, and be ready to execute them in a timely manner as the situation requires. And like any other emergency, freaking out is not one of the options. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
Mandatory AAD's (was: Franklin County fatality)

Same argument for helmets and seat belts. They don't guarantee to save your life but they do greatly increase the odds. *** Never said they didn't. That wasn't my point. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
In a battle situation you are prolly right. Taking a civilian on a skydive is a bit different. If there is an issue with safety I would think you would have a strong case to argue before a disciplinary tribunal. Ultimately it is the TI's responsibility, and therefore his call. You can bet if he broke the president through following such an order he would be on a charge pretty damn quick. The superior who gave the order would be running for cover for sure, leaving him to carry the can. The Nuremburg trials set the precedent about following "orders". Mandatory AAD's (was: Franklin County fatality)
obelixtim replied to cgriff's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you think wearing an AAD guarantees your survival, you need to think again. Its a good back up device, but making them mandatory does not mean people can survive every time they have a problem. Wearing an AAD may help save your life, but that is as far as it goes. No device can replace proper decision making and correct EP procedures. If you have one, you should embark on every jump prepared to carry out EP's as if it isn't there. Never forget that. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -
Exit and drogue pitch are a critical part of a safe skydive. If there's an incident, guess who gets the blame? Problems with drogues have already killed people. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

What's expected of a student during a tandem malfunction?
obelixtim replied to leafyanna's topic in Tandem Skydiving
You've got to take any news report with a big grain of salt when it comes to the technical details of "what happened". But the APF report seems to ask a question about how the TM handled the incident with regard to his EP's. Out of sequence EP's could be a factor here, but its possible he had a hangup or had trouble cutting away. Thats the question that needs to be answered. It might never be, because its often difficult, if not impossible to get a definitive answer. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... -

Whoa there!!!. Pre WW1 people were jumping and surviving. Mostly static line operated, but I'm sure they thought their parachures were very significant. The German Luftwaffe in WW1 equipped their balloonists and pilots with parachutes because they recognised the value of saving experienced pilots, rather than losing their personnel in battle. The British did not do so because they had the idea that carrying a parachute would give a pilot a way to avoid battle by baling out before combat, "cowardice in the face of the enemy". A lot of pilots went down in flames because of this stupidity. Quite a lot went on before 1919. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
