Downsizing Question
ridebmxbikes replied to jsfirefighter88's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
^- no bargaining skills at all shouldn't be too hard to find some used gear to fit a 210-220 to make some jumps on and when you're done with it... wait for it... you can sell it and get if not all, most of your money back! play your cards right and maybe even make a little profit! rent for 20-40 jumps? thats 500-1000 bucks! well there goes your canopy money -
its for the camaraderie man! same reason you get an A-license stamp on your forehead. can have a beer with them afterwards!

i don't know the difference between a saber ll and the storm but haven't personally known anyone taking that path. the pd path that I've always understood was saber, katana, velo because each of those canopies are suppose to build on one another. don't get me wrong, you can swoop any canopy out there. but if you're curious about other canopies try and see if someone will let you borrow theirs for a jump. id say demo but as may canopies that are out there you could buy brand new for cheaper than testing everything out. personally i rock a katana and love it! they definitely are not for everyone though. very long recovery arc! i still haven't gotten to try a crossfire but I've heard all good about them too!

my dz i went through aff at actually wouldn't let me jump without an aad once i had my license but they didn't have a requirement to have an aad which prompted them to come up with a company policy. one of the other instructors convinced them to set a 50 jump rule stating that its at least double what the uspa requires and they agreed to it. so maybe instead of suggesting either an all or nothing type of deal, maybe just try to have the standards raised to either a; b or c-license and that may get the ball rolling and set a better standard. lets face it, getting the uspa to add or change rules is almost fruitless. every time they do they catch a big bag of shit from everybody! if anyone is that concerned about an issue how about contacting/e-mailing all the dz's (at least the ones in your own country) and trying to incorporate a company policy. maybe grandfather the ones that would directly effect but will set a higher standard for newbies that wouldn't even know the difference.

Neither can I. Do you know someone who does? What kind of life preservation device are you referring to? I think he was referring to people that don't use a skyhook because "that damn thing costs a whole 300 dollars!!!". Then they spend just as much in customized stripe colors and embroideries. Some of us can't get a skyhook for 300 bucks! I've asked and was toldno because its a container modification. So if I want one it'll cost a lot more than that. Now Im sure you were talking about people that buy new rigs or at least has a rig from a company that's still around. I just saw an opening for a post

You should read the whole thread! It has a lot of good information about giving advice! And yes, you do learn a lot when someone corrects someone's advice and also completely explains it. But what if no one catches you? Now we have another person with ill and even less complete understandings. Read the whole thread!

No it's not. It's a sport where the risk can be managed, but it ain't safe. so is skydiving safe or not?! i came into this sport thinking it was dangerous, then i find out its safe, then during my aff I'm told its dangerious, then once i got my license I'm informed its safe... but i keep getting all these mixed opinions if its safe or not! well, which is it?! back to thread topic. i don't use an aad, they are expensive! if they become mandatory who's gonna give me an aad? is the government going to distribute these things or the uspa? if they say the don't have the money what makes them think i do? yes i do believe in them and would have no problem owning one. even had a friend saved by one, but force it upon me unless you are going to put one in my hand. as for as rsl's are concerned. i believe in them, i use one now and will always prefer to have one. have i jump without one? yes. but they are cheap enough that there's no excuse not to get one unless you firmly believe that an rsl will kill you.

B license, jumping with a tandem?
ridebmxbikes replied to blueraincap's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
it depends on the dz. one use to let me chase the tandems once i had my A license, it was either that or do a solo, i would only get on level about 20-30 feet out and just watch, never tried to get close. i knew the actual rules so i was just being cautious. another dz wouldn't let me chase a friend doing a tandem after i had 300 jumps. you really just have to ask and I'm not talking about the guy that just got his tandem rating. talk to the dzo and/or the s&ta. just watched a guy ask a newer tandem master and he was allowed up until the dzo found out and ripped him a new @$$. just ask the RIGHT person. if you don't ask then the answer is always no and if they say yes then don't believe them! -

Need something tough? Do you plan on pounding in more than usual this weekend? If so you may want to invest more in pads to protect yourself. But seriously, you shouldn't need anything more than what you are currently using assuming your profile is correct. If you're just worried about getting your pretty jumpsuit dirty you could always just get a cheap pair of jeans or grab a student suit from the rentals and use the money you saved to do extra hop n pops while you have a good coach

don't have to buy beer after 1000 jumps?
ridebmxbikes replied to ridebmxbikes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I appreciate the responses! From what I took of this maybe there are some groups out there that don't buy beer for achievements after 1000 but ultimately it is a volunteer participation thing. I can't and don't see my friend just never buying beer again but we were just having a silly debate. Going by the votes I win but I guess by others comments he's not exactly wrong in his statement either. Anyone know if the rule was more popular before the turbine plane days when 1000 jumps was much less common? He did do about 200 jumps back in the late 60's to early 70's. I'm thinking that's where he probably got it from but it just kinda died out along the way? -
don't have to buy beer after 1000 jumps?
ridebmxbikes replied to ridebmxbikes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hey guys! Having a debate with my friend who is about to hit 1000 jumps. He's saying that after 1000 he doesn't have to buy beer anymore and I was wondering if there was any truth to this. -
What do you like about canopy flight?
ridebmxbikes replied to ianyapxw's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
"big" and "fast" is all relative. At 5 jumps and at 28 jumps you should be pulling on anything and everything to figure out how the canopy will react and also ask your instructors for some good drills under canopy. Just be sure you stop playing once you get to your hard deck and make sure no one else is around you. Id rather see a student play with their canopy than be afraid to touch anything! -
What do you like about canopy flight?
ridebmxbikes replied to ianyapxw's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
At 28 jumps, your time here would be better spent listening a bit more and talking a bit less. Bwahaha, I nearly spit my drink out! -
I had that problem with a couple of smaller 100sf ish canopies. I think the slide was too small/ didn't have enough slack in the slider once everything opened up. If you put a stow on the risers it would probably still pop up in the center and aggravate you/cause a big blind spot. The only thing I could think of was to get a removable slider but I switched canopies before then and haven't had a problem since. Maybe someone else will have a better idea. Id also like to know for future references!

most student gear isn't freefly friendly which is why they told him he's only cleared for belly. now i believe he shouldn't have had a premature opening the instant he went on his back. he also didn't perform any canopy control checks and he only released one toggle which put him into a spin but instead just wanted to talk into his camera
