  1. Gold coast skydivers is only 2 hours away from mobile. Its has a small dz atmosphere with a big plane (twin otter). They are open all weekend long!
  2. Get even non swoopers to back you up too! Losing canopy pilots at the dz will be a very valuable resource lost at the dz.
  3. I make a hour and a half drive every weekend. It aint a bad drive. Its worth it to rock out a sweet 270!
  4. hey! thanks for pulling this thread up! watched a few shows on youtube and i think I'm hooked! how many jumps do you think the skydiver had attempting the plane to plane transfer?
  5. well you could put it on top next to the eos camera since you have all that room up there or you could stick it on the front with a front mount kit and just flip the picture upside down
  6. why not just hook up a base canopy to a skydiving rig? just make sure you get someone to show you how to make it open slooow and dump it sub terminal
  7. Ive been getting multiple messages from "lovethph". Just started this morning. They just registered today.
  8. Say if you have a hard pull, you have one of two scenarios. You cutaway first and if your main comes out by chance you lose your main or have a more difficult time finding it. If you dont cutaway and you main by chance comes out you now have main delpoying into your reserve. May end up being a two out or may end up being a main/reserve entanglement. when everything goes to hell, im pulling the safe card!
  9. Check out the cutaway series on youtube by "APFskydiver". They have a great review of malfunctions with video.
  10. And as was the case during my course we were jumping older F111 canopies and needed all the flare power we could get to land safely, so we didnt fly final on half brakes. Lastly the guy didnt land "off field". He didnt land in a back yard. He land as the OP himself noted, "wrong corner of the airfield." Thats it. As a student he doesnt need a page long soliloquy on the finer points of canopy piloting. As is most often the case, and as he himself admits, since he didnt fly final on a half-braked position, it was probably lack of an authoritative flare. And he can sort it out with his instructors. Am I reading this all wrong.....is Doug Davis really argueing canopy control with Hillson?? just wait till he has 100 jumps
  11. Here are a couple of pics of the other side as requested after it was repacked. Packed the same as before. Sorry about the wait.
  12. you are flying an unpowered wing. the slower you fly your canopy the less responsive it is and the less brakes you leave yourself with. it is totally possible to get a good landing from a half braked approach but it is tricky and takes some practice. the whole going downwind thing is the reason for so much forward speed. i personally prefer a baseball slide when i have that much speed. i wouldn't think first goggles qualifies as a beer purchase. they are too insignificant. your first downwinder/off landing does though!
  13. Ah, i see what you are saying. Had to look at my rig again. Originally i was seeing how the big ring was stitched under the top of the mudflap making that gap look smaller than it was but i does have some room up in the yoke. Still buggin me though.
  14. thought about that too, the riggers inspected the yolk and the housing was still tacked inside the yolk. doesn't have enough flexibility to be pulled into the yolk.
  15. ha thanks, I've been working on that like for 30 minutes
  16. very interested in seeing if any one has seen this before. refer to picture and video of the after math. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_87L_Ay6dvM
  17. Thats simple! If you had a second reserve then you couldnt call the first reserve a reserve because you have a second reserve which also means if the first reserve doesnt exist then there is no second reserve. So now, just because you tried to add a second reserve, you now dont have a first or a second reserve and the faa clearly states you have to have a reserve!
  18. The dz i jump at requires a 500 jump minimum to chase a tandem and experience using a camera. When i started the s&ta had a talk with me about flying around tandems and hand signals, made me go with him for evaluation and i also talked to other vt's about the slot i needed to fly. After the s&ta thought i was safe and a conservative flyer around tandems they let me put my camera back on so i could get criticed. i never really concentrated on filming specifically doing rw but did fly a camera a lot. Flying a tandem video slot is a lot different than an rw slot. As long as you are use to flying a camera and know the dangers of them. A seminar wouldve been cool but how much would that cost a new perspective vt. Just make sure he qualifies, talk to him about tandem safety, have him talk to other vidiots, and just take it one step at a time.
  19. The instructor's survey may be able to help people find common problems with students even though a couple of searches on here will have most of your questions answered. The skydivers survey is very close to the instructors just reworded, can also be answered by a couple of searches and who ever came up with those questions sounds like they arent gonna last long.
  20. My chest strap usually freaks people out. I have a chest strap extension, the excess from the extension goes back over the stock buckle yo get stowed on the right side and the stock strap gets stowed on the left side. Unless we have a chest strap gripped exit or hybrid, If you pull on my chest strap im pulling your cutaway handle. Then its your move!
  21. Well the hot rising air has to come from somewhere. So yes there should be some air moving down to a small degree but the dropping effect has to do with your air speed. When you come out of that rising air your canopy may make a dive to netural out its designed flight path. Im sure someone on here can explain much better than me. As for landing on asphalt, my only suggestion is to wear shoes and remember that you probably wont slide like you will on grass. The second your feet touch the ground they are just gonna stick.
  22. Ha, one guy at my dz keeps trying to buy radios so i can teach him how to crw and swoop i keep trying to tell him im not that kind of guy but keeps insisting.
  23. And learn how to pack parachutes! You could even do that on the weekends during school too as long as it doesnt interfere with your school work. Excellent way to get jump tickets!
