  1. And Bush thinks that the best thing for America to do to protect itself is to invade Iraq? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  2. I'm going to do my best to respond to each of you one at a time: wlie: You're absolutely right. For the record, let me just state that this is not an isolated incident. This professor is notorious for writing abusive things on student work. Recently he told someone else that their paper looked like "somebody pooped on a piece of paper and called it an essay." He's been known to make grown men cry, and I'm not exaggerating. He's an asshole, plain and simple. tombuch: Exactly! Ultimately, these sorts of comments do not teach you anything. I have 6 years of university studies behind me, so I have faith in my abilities, which is good. Because if this were my first year, I'd probably take this a lot harder. I don't think I'm going to talk to the professor though. If he is unable to make any constructive criticism in writing, I doubt he would be able to do it in person. I'm just going to grin and bear the rest of the term... cam: I appreciate your perspective, cam, but I assure you there were no racist assumptions, cliches, or stereotypes. Regardless, if you look again at the comment he wrote, he said absolutely nothing about the content of the essay - not even that it was uniformly stupid. I don't even know whether he liked or disliked the content of the essay. He only commented on its tone (something that seems to me to be of less importance on an essay you have to tear out in 45 minutes). My beef isn't so much that I did badly (which I really didn't), it is the inappropriateness of that comment. Do I think that he's out to get me specifically? No. He does this to everyone. jraf: I'll try to get to the scanner later and post the essay. kallend: Ha ha ... I actually do like writing a lot. Like I said earlier, this is pretty much an isolated scenario. I've had nothing but support from my other professors. What this teaches me is not to get out of the field, but just not to take another class with this guy. Gawein (and I like your green knight): Cough...cough... I got a B for the exam. But that is a graduate school B, which is very different than an undergrad B. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  3. I'm with you Aggie. No physical ailments, just a case of seasonal affective disorder. It's cold, dark, wet, cloudy, and just all around shitty. The worst part is, I know it's going to get worse before it gets better. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  4. Would you like me to transcribe the whole thing here? It's about two and a half pages... A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  5. Well, as somebody whose a)parents paid for his undergrad and b) is on a full ride graduate school fellowship, I'm just going to wallow in white guilt if you don't mind... A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  6. So today my professor returned my midterm exam. This is what he wrote regarding the first essay: "Am I supposed to be insulted by your remarks and tone in your 'answer' to the first question? You flatter yourself." You know, I can take criticism, but there is a big difference between criticizing and being a complete dickmunch. Especially when the professor doesn't bother to comment on the content of the essay. Yes, that quotation is his entire response to my exam question. I only wonder what the hell he is compensating for? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  7. I've been wondering about this: whenever I go searching through the classified ads, most of the categories are labeled "New." Does this "New" mean that ads have been added in the last few days, or is this supposed to mean that new ads have been added since I last visited (like the new posts in the forums)? 10. OK, Here's my question: In a stable boxman, the Cypres will be in a diver's burble. If the diver happens to be on his back, the Cypres will not. How is it able to account for the pressure difference in these two positions in knowing when to fire? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  11. I jump at Napoleon Skydiving Center, and they usually let people go along for the ride in the Caravan. Only thing is the Caravan is gone for the season...won't be back until spring. Don't think there's room in the 182, but you can ask!! Steve A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  12. Sigh...another crappy weather day. I'm afraid that they're just going to get worse and worse, too. Today it was cloudy and really windy. Hopefully tomorrow will be better, but they're forecasting rain... I'm getting a bit homesick here on the ground. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  13. Hee hee, I heard one source saying that she saw the guy who pushed him. Evidently the victim was taken by surprise as he really went over easy. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  14. No, I understand that. What is that quote on somebody's signature here? Knowlegde is what you get when you read the fine print, Experience is what you get when you don't... Regardless, I think I'm going to steer clear of ANY escrow service from now on. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  15. Grr... I'm so freaking annoyed. I was interested in a rig I saw posted here, so I spoke with the seller. She was not comfortable just shipping the rig to my rigger, so she insisted we go through Escrow.com, and we would split the escrow fee ($30 each). I said fine. I sent the payment to the escrow service. It took them two weeks to clear payment on my check, so that by the time they did, my rigger was leaving for Georgia. So I had this person overnight the rig to me. Took it to the rigger, and it was a complete lemon. I shipped it back with a check for the overnight delivery. So, I sent the escrow service a check for the rig, plus $30 escrow fee + $30 shipping fee and a check to the seller for overnight delivery-$30 shipping fee I sent to escrow.com. Now I find out that (my own fault...I should have read the fine print) that when you reject the item, you are entirely responsible for the escrow fee. I asked the seller to please write me a check for her half, and of course I have not gotten a response. This means that to look, JUST TO LOOK, at this piece of $#!^, I have spent $30+$30+$40 to send it back+$70 to cover her shipping = $170! This really pisses me off. I would not recommend using this escrow service for buying a used rig. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  16. The good news is this term is almost over, so the classes you're taking will be over soon, too. What, 6 weeks left? That's not very much. And this is coming from somebody whose Thursdays look like this: 8:30-10:00 English Seminar 10:00 Race to catch a shuttle to North Campus to make my 10:30-11:30 Teach 12:30-1:30 Teach 2:30-4 Musicology Seminar 4-7 Music Theory Seminar Ugh... At least I have no Friday classes after that shit!! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

    Music?

Ha! This reminds of some program notes I read at a performance of Bach's B-Minor Mass, in which the author wonders why 400 years of Western art music can be lumped under the term "classical," whereas popular music gets infinitely subdivided and subdivided into minute, highly specific categories. Music?

Hmmm... Mahler's 2nd, Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, virtually anything by Stravinsky, Louis Vierne, Olivier Messiaen, Bach, Nine Inch Nails, boy the list just goes on and on, doesn't it?!? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  22. Hah! And so often I've heard the argument that homosexuality is just not natural (whatever the hell that is!), after all, you don't see any gay animals. Bonobo monkeys are famous for their homosexual behaviors, and now sheep! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  23. Laugh if you want but the issue is not dead: My girlfriend is in her last year of a flute performance degree. Immediately after we started going out, she was raped by this musicology candidate. She tried to report it, but the administration blamed her for it (this, after two other women have already complained about sexual harassment from this shithead), and now, one of her professors, who happens to be on this guy's dissertation committee, has started to trash her writing, her scholarship, and her potential for graduate work. You think there are no important feminist ideas? I know this post was meant in jest, but until women stop getting raped, and until women stop being treated with condescension from the masculine hegemonic mainstream, I stand by feminism.
