Heh heh, sorry Dante... All joking aside, he sounds like quite the nutcase. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

Scary, but I guess that's true. But wait! I've always been taught that knowledge is power and not the other way around! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

My favorite rule was no swearing. That one was great, because inevitably someone would swear, then swear again when they realized they'd have to drink! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

This reminds me of my Level 7 dive. After the diving exit, I went into a mad spin. My JM later told me that she watched me go around like 7 or 8 times and was about to get really annoyed that she was going to have to stop me on a level 7. Then, she said she watched me tense up, flail a bit, and then just sort of give up. Once I gave up, I relaxed, and got into a perfect arch. Very counterintuitive, trying to relax as you're screaming toward the ground at 120 miles per hour... A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

But Deuce, how do you expect me to become an academic tyrant if I use comprehensible language? What I mean by "heteronormative reinscription" is that the Rocky Horror Picture Show, even though it has an overt message of sexual liberation, actually serves to reinforce cultural norms of monogamous heterosexuality. This morning, I turned in the best paper I have ever written. It was for my doctoral seminar in music theory: Music, Theory, Gender, and Sexuality. The title is "A Sheep in a Wolf's Corset: Traditional Narrative and Heteronormative Reinscription in the Rocky Horror Picture Show" I swear, the more you watch that movie, the more you realize just how brilliant Richard O'Brien is. There are so many subcurrents and intertextual elements that one could write for years and never get a complete and encyclopedic reading. Then throw in the cult aspects of the film, and there is a life and half's work, right there. There are times when writing a paper feels like a constant struggle, and other times when it is just plain exciting, and this was the most fun I've had (or thought was possible) writing a paper. I was at the Arbor Brewing Company, one of the three local brewpubs in Ann Arbor, enjoying one of their fine Old #22 German Alts at the weekly departmental happy hour. Ali comes in a bit later than the rest of us, and after the waitstaff changed shifts, so she was the only one of us that got carded. Unfortunately, she was the only one who was not yet of age. I said to her, "Man, what a bummer that you forgot your ID ... nobody else at the table got carded tonight." She basically blew me off (I still give her shit for blowing me off that night!

Deuce, I think we may owe beer for seeing eye to eye here! Cheers, what'll you have? Best of luck with your county government bureaucratic work, too!

You're absolutely right when you say this, Deuce, but this is not at all what I'm talking about. The purpose of a debate is not to understand the other party, but to push your own agenda. Think of a presidential debate. Were Bush or Gore interested in each other's views? And when someone shouts, as Narcimund points out, that homosexuality is just plain wrong, end of story, this person is not interested in learning about other lifestyles or inviting "others to tell them why they are wrong," but in pushing their own anti-gay agenda. As somebody going in to the field of academia, I can sympathize with your frustration with "the tyranny of experts." Believe me, I deal with it all the time. Fortunately, academia is beginning to understand that there is no objective perspective on any issue and younger scholars are more willing to admit their own limitations in terms of both understanding and subjectivity. Nonetheless, in the context of a debate I will put my money in an informed opinion, not in one that rests wholly in visceral feeling. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

If you are assuming when you write this that "homosexual" is a new meaning for the word "gay," you are quite wrong. Gay has meant gay for a rather long time (in America, early 20th century and before), but the climate being what it was, the public chose to hear the meaning "happy" rather than "homosexual." This goes for this thread as well as the Homos II thread, which I didn't jump into because I don't like jumping into the middle of debates, but there has been so much research done in queer studies by straight, bisexual, and gays and lesbians that render most of the homophobic opinions voiced around here incorrect and ignorant. If you engage in a debate and do not remotely understand your opponent's argument, you will sound ignorant. This goes for any argument, be it on sexuality, tax credits, or war. The responsibility rests firmly with all parties involved to figure out what they're talking about before they open their mouths. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
